Winter Bi- Annual 2019 SJA Congratulates David Gonzalez, National Merit Commended Scholar In late 2017, over 1.6 million students across the nation took the PSAT and entered into a competition for the National Merit Scholarship, a prestigious award given to the highest scoring students in the nation. The top 3% of all scores are recognized as commended students, a truly notable honor. These young men and women have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic and scholarly success. Congratulations to SJA Senior David Gonzalez for outstanding performance on the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. David is flanked by his family, Ismael and Isela Gonzalez. It is my sincere hope and prayer that we all do so with faith in our hearts and a belief that God is there with us on our journey. Just remember that the New Year is not just about making broad sweeping changes in our lives, but about building on who we are and focusing on how we can become closer to the person God wants us to be. Our faculty spent some time preparing for the new year by learning more about the legacy of the Sisters of St. Joseph. More specifically, they enjoyed a wonderful presentation by Sr. Carol Stovall who led us in a prayerful retreat centered on the Maxims of Perfection. The maxims are a set of principles upon which to live a life of faith. Each maxim contains a brief reflection, a scriptural reference and a suggested application to our daily lives. We are working together to use them as Spiritual resolutions in the new year and working to pre- sent some of the more relevant ones to our students. You can check them out here: http://www.ssjfl.org/prayer/maxims -of-perfection/. This spring we are also looking forward to welcoming two exciting additions to our staff. The first is a second school counselor with a background in Mental Health Counseling and experience as a learning specialist. We believe she will be a wonderful addition to our more aptly named Office of School Counseling and College Planning. We are also working with a consultant on a new marketing plan for the school. As part of the process we’ve partnered with Flagler College to bring a social media and marketing intern onto the staff for the semester. She’ll be working with the Admissions and Development offices, as well as my office, not only to enhance our social media presence (and if you are not already following us on Facebook, Insta- gram and Twitter, I hope you will!), but to assist us in looking at a more robust approach to messaging in our community. The last note is that I’d like you to keep an eye out for an email survey that will be released in early February regarding a feasibility study we have been working on since this past summer. There are some notable plans in the works for the future of St. Joseph Academy that I’d like your feedback on before we move forward. As you peruse the stories and accomplishments listed here, I hope you are as excited as I am about the successes of our students. May God continue to Bless St. Joseph Academy! Winter Bi– Annual 2019 Page 3 The St. Augustine Alligator Farm 38th Annual Golf Classic to Benefit SJA The 38th Annual Golf Classic was held on Monday, November 19, 2018. This was our second year at The Golf Club at South Hampton. Thanks to Willy DiStefano, South Hamp- ton’s owner and Golf Pro and their outstanding staff for their assistance and for going the extra mile to make sure every aspect of the tournament ran smoothly. God blessed us with magnificent weather and a field of 116 golfers! Fr. Jason Trull, Pas- tor of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic offered a prayer to begin the tournament, thanking the golfers for their participation and support of Catholic education. Gratitude goes out to a great group of sponsors and golfers who participate and support the SJA Golf Classic each year. Your generosity and loyalty to the cause is greatly valued and appreciated. The 38th Annual Golf Classic generated $27,200.00 net for the Academy, surpassing last year’s total and coming in as our best result in Golf Classic history! We look forward to see- ing you next November! A new trophy has been added to the Golf Classic this year: The Low Gross Champions Tro- phy. The Low Gross Champions’ names will be engraved on the trophy each year, and this Golf Classic Trophy will enjoy a place of prominence in the Lobby at SJA.
