1 WORD and SACRAMENT Sermon Presented to St. Paul's Church 3 WORD AND SACRAMENT Sermon Presented to St. Paul’s Church 3 Easter, Luke 24:13-35, Year A April 26, 2020 Thack Dyson Luke’s story of the Emmaus Road encounter on Easter day surely ranks as one of the great short stories in the Bible. Before focusing on the two main points of the story, I’d like to make a few observations. First, the improbabilities of the story speak to me again of the truth of the resurrection. This is simply not the kind of story you make up if you want to prove that the resurrection has happened. In this story Jesus appears not to his inner circle of disciples, but to two of the other 120 or so disciples that also followed Jesus during his public ministry. One was named Cleopas and the other one’s name is not even remembered, or at least reported by Luke. Jesus is not in Jerusalem, in the Galilee region or some other place which has been significant in his life. Instead, he is on the road to a small town called Emmaus, which was believed to be seven miles from Jerusalem. In addition, the account leaves wonderment about the inability of Jesus’ own disciples to recognize him. At first blush, this does not seem like the kind of story one would expect to try to prove the resurrection. On second thought, though, this is classically Jesus. The one who came not primarily to the religious authorities and rulers of his day but to fishermen and tax collectors and ordinary people now appears to ordinary people in the resurrection – not just the inner circle of the eleven remaining disciples. Where you least expect him, that is where Jesus is likely to turn up. In the person you least expect to see Jesus in, he comes shining through. Where there is sadness and despair, Jesus comes bringing hope and understanding. These truths are every bit as relevant today as they were for Cleopas and his friend. 1 Second, we see what was in danger of happening to the Jesus movement after his crucifixion. Movements tend to dissolve quickly once the leader is gone, and this is what the religious leaders were thinking when they had Jesus crucified. It began happening quickly, as disciples like Cleopas and his friend and probably many others who had been brought together by Jesus began drifting back to their old lives. The kingdom of God Jesus promised was but a painful, short lived chapter in their memories. Surely without some powerful, authentic experiences of the Risen Christ, the hope would not have been kept alive for the Day of Pentecost. Third, and leading into the two major points, is the fact that the resurrection appearances are to people of faith, not the opponents of Jesus or people who don’t know him already. Resurrection appearances are not used to convert the world in general by great signs and miracles, and this is true to the way Jesus conducted his life and ministry. As Biblical commentator Fred Craddock suggests, “Faith is not coerced or overwhelmed by revelations to the unprepared. Notice that in the Gospels the risen Christ appears to disciples, not to unbelievers on the street and in synagogues to frighten them into becoming believers.” (Adapted, Interpretation, Luke, p. 285) This leads us into consideration of the two main points of this story: WORD and SACRAMENT. The disciples came to understand who Jesus was after he opens the Scriptures to them and then in sharing the meal with Cleopas and his companion. This has great meaning for the church today, because the Word and sacraments are still primary ways that the Risen Christ is revealed to us. First, then, is the interpretation of Scripture. A man joins the two disciples on their journey to Emmaus and asks them what they are talking about. They are amazed that he could 2 be walking from Jerusalem without knowing what they would be talking about. The crucifixions were what everybody was talking about. Cleopas said, “Are you the only one living in Jerusalem who doesn’t know the things that have happened there in these days?” An ironic question, since Jesus is the only one who truly understands the things that have happened in Jerusalem. But he asks innocently, “What things?” And they responded by telling the story of the earthly Jesus, up to the point of the empty tomb but not yet believing the resurrection. “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they told him. “He was a prophet, mighty in word and deed. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place, and some went to the tomb this morning and found it empty and saw angels who said he was alive, but they did not see him.” I imagine they expected commiseration or sympathy from the stranger, but instead they got chastised for their lack of understanding. “How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” And he proceeded to lay out for them how the Old Testament was filled with foresight from beginning to end about the role of the Messiah. You see, the disciples knew the story of Jesus, but they failed to connect that with the larger witness of Scripture. They wanted, as all of us want, for life to be filled with happiness and success and victories. That a painful event, an ending, could serve a positive, even necessary function, and be a new beginning, was not in their minds. So Jesus gave them a Bible study, helping them see how the Old Testament spoke of a God who wins in spite of rejection, a God who loves in spite of rebellion, a Suffering Servant 3 who gives his life as a ransom for many. In that context, he helped them understand that the death of Jesus was not a monstrous deviation from what should have been, but the fulfillment of a glorious plan of salvation. As his kingdom was not of this world, so his death was required in order for him to enter into his glory. As he finished, they arrived in Emmaus. Jesus was continuing on, but the two urged him to come in to eat and stay with them, because it was getting late. So Jesus went in to stay with them. When the meal was served, Jesus, the visitor, acted as the host. He took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and began to give it to them. At that point the eyes of the two disciples were opened to recognize Jesus, and he vanished from their sight. They looked at each other and it all made sense. They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” Do you know the feeling that washes over you when something finally makes sense to you? That’s what they mean when they say their hearts were burning. Further, had the disciples had not shown hospitality by inviting Jesus in, they would not have come to know who he was. There was the sacramental nature of the meal they shared. Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to them. By opening up God’s Word for them and then sharing a meal, Jesus was fully revealed to them. What can we learn from this story? First, we learn Jesus is present where we least expect him. He’s not just in the Upper Room, not just in the sermon on the mount, not just at church… the Risen Christ can be encountered and known anywhere. The keys are reading and interpreting the Scriptures, and allowing the Spirit of Jesus to lead us in understanding them; then by inviting Jesus into our lives to dwell with us; and giving thanks to him as the source of our daily bread 4 and all blessings. It is as we do these things that our eyes are opened to recognize him and believe that he is the risen Lord. Fred Craddock says, “Luke here tells us that the living Christ is both the key to our understanding the Scriptures and the very present Lord who is revealed to us in the breaking of bread. His presence at the table makes all believers first-generation Christians and every meeting place Emmaus.” (Ibid., p. 287) The story ends as Cleopas and his friend get up and immediately start the seven-mile trip back to Jerusalem, even though evening has come. Their hearts are now light and their feet can’t move fast enough. They have good news to share with the others! And when they get there they find the apostles already assembled and buzzing because Jesus had appeared to Simon Peter as well. Cleopas and his friend tell their story, creating further amazement among the apostles. And so in his resurrection, Jesus is still the good shepherd, not only caring for the eleven who are still present and accounted for, but also seeking out the sheep who are becoming scattered and lost in discouragement. The believers are being reunited and reinvigorated, so that they can be prepared for the task of being the church, the body of Christ. It is true that where we least expect him in our lives… in sorrow, in sadness, in loneliness, in running away from our problems or responsibilities, Jesus is there.

The general concensus is that Mark was written in about 65 A.D., probably in Rome. Even the casual reader is bound to notice that the four gospels are each distinct. Though one early attempt was made to merge the four into a single synthetic account, the Diatessaron by Tatian in about 170 A.D., it has been the practice of the church to keep them separate. Each gospel was composed by selecting narratives, parables, miracles and so forth from the traditions about Jesus. We may assume that inasmuch as they were each written within and for specific communities, the selection of the material in each gospel reflects to some degree the situation of the church in which it was written. In other words, the elements which were selected by the evangelists with which to compose the gospels were chosen because they addressed a need in the community of faith. The selections were intentional, not haphazard. Each evangelist had at his disposal various resources, including the OT in Hebrew and Greek, the oral traditions which had been preserved about Jesus, the written traditions, if any, which had already preceded him, and the eyewitness accounts of those who had personally witnessed events in the life of Jesus. Whether or not there were any written materials at Mark's disposal is debated. Many scholars have conjectured for years that there was a "sayings" source underlying some of the gospels, though usually this source is thought to have been incorporated into Matthew and Luke rather than in Mark.

    St Peter’s, Ealing Sunday 26th April 2020 Easter 3 “Oh, how foolish you are!” This marvellous story from the Gospel of Luke, of Two disciples walking the road to Emmaus is one of those ‘grounding’ stories we find through the gospels. It is one that stops us getting carried away on the hype and excessive joy of the resurrection. We might be tempted to hang on to stories like the one from Acts today. Three thousand converts in one go! Amazing, joyous news. How the church must have already been growing – astonishing. Yet here we have a little check, a little reality check. Two of Jesus’ followers, broken and lost, are found making their way some with a sort of “well, that’s that then” demeanour. We are told they had not quite got the whole picture yet. When approached by the risen Lord Jesus they are asked what their problem was. Agog that this bloke, this fellow traveller hadn’t heard what went on in Jerusalem that Passover they said, “Haven’t you heard, the authorities killed a great prophet who was mighty in word and deed”. If that is all Jesus was then we would find his bones on the rubbish tips of Jerusalem and the story would come to an end. Cleopas and his friend, along with many other disciples, had not understood – not just the horror of is execution, but they’d not understood the words Jesus had uttered and the message of his three year ministry, the total of his teaching. Jesus’ reply, “Oh, how foolish you are.” Underlined his exasperation and he explained again what his life, death and resurrection actually meant, how his ministry was the completion of the salvation story told in the scriptures, how the prophets had spoken about his coming as Messiah and God’s intended action in the world for the salvation of creation.

    THE ROAD TO EMMAUS Luke 24: 13-35 Today’s Gospel reading is perfect for what we are all going through right now! Today is the Third Sunday of Easter - exactly two weeks after Easter. I have read this gospel, or heard it, or proclaimed it throughout my entire life. In it, I know that Jesus appeared to these two disciples who were leaving Jerusalem after Jesus’ death and burial and were walking to Emmaus. On the way they were talking about what had happened in Jerusalem. Then a stranger caught up with them. The stranger was Jesus, but they didn’t recognize Him. Despite my familiarity with this reading, as I prepared this homily over the last several days, I realized some things I had never noticed before and found out a few new details that were amazing to me. This Gospel begins with the words, “That very day,” That very day was Easter Sunday. This single chapter, Chapter 24, of Luke’s Gospel, a chapter with only 53 verses or 1060 words, includes Easter morning at Jesus’ tomb, followed by this story of the Disciples’ encounter with Jesus on the road to Emmaus, that same day, followed by Jesus’ first appearance to His Apostles and Disciple in the Upper Room on Easter Sunday evening which includes Jesus’ explanation of the Scriptures and the Prophets. This chapter, and St. Luke’s Gospel, ends with the Ascension of Jesus into heaven. Now, back to this gospel, one disciple is named, Cleopas, who along with his companion, were walking away from Jerusalem on Easter morning, They were forlorn and debating about the events that had occurred from Good Friday through that Sunday morning.

The table fellowship of Jesus has been a prominent dynamic of Jesus’ ministry and mission throughout the gospel, a sign of God’s kingdom among us even now. This table emphasis continues after the Lord’s resurrection. In addition to the meal at Emmaus, Luke also records the fact that Jesus eats a piece of broiled fish with his apostles, proving that he’s not just a spirit but has a real body after the resurrection (vv 41-43). John also records Jesus eating a breakfast of fish with disciples after his resurrection (John 21.9-14). 3. In Acts 10.41, Peter’s sermon to Cornelius includes the apostle’s mention that he ate and drank with Jesus after Jesus had been raised from the dead. So in the apostolic witness and preaching, one of the historical proofs of Jesus’ resurrection was their testimony about having a meal with the Risen Lord. Table fellowship with the Lord and with other believers is perhaps the major theme in Luke’s two-volume set in the NT—the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. Sharing a meal with the Lord in the community of saints thus serves as the central emphasis in the on-going life of Christ’s Body, the Church. 4. Let’s remember that the “great three days” in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ begin with the Last Supper and end with the Emmaus meal.

They are only mentioned in the Gospel of St. Luke, and he reports that Jesus appointed them and sent them out in pairs to preach the gospel. The Twelve generally remained at Christ's side, serving as witnesses to His life; but the Seventy preceded Him in every place He visited. The Feast of the Seventy Apostles is commemorated on January 4/17 and was established by the Orthodox Church to indicate the equal honor of each of the Seventy. Besides the celebration of the Feast of the Seventy Apostles, the Church also celebrates the memory of each of them during the course of the year.

    The Apostle Matthew November 16, 2014 GOSPEL: Matthew 9:9-13 EPISTLE: 1 Corinthians 4:9-16 Matthew as a Publican Matthew was the son of Alphaeus (Mark 2:14), who was also called Cleopas, and Matthew’s brother, James, was also one of the Twelve Apostles. Since Cleopas was the brother of Joseph, the Betrothed of the Virgin Mary, Matthew was Jesus’ step cousin. See Figure 1 for details. Matthew’s father, Alphaeus (Cleopas), along with the Evangelist Luke, met the risen Christ on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-18). And his mother, Mary, the wife of Clopas, was one of the myrrh-bearing women at the foot of the Cross and at the Tomb (John 19:25). A number of tax collectors had come to John the Baptist for baptism (Luke 3:12-13). Matthew may have been one of them. John’s instruction to them was to hold to the Mosaic Law and collect only what was appointed, and avoid gouging people. Matthew’s given name was Levi (Mark 2:14, Luke 5:27, Matthew 9:9), but he later took the name Matthew (“The gift of Yahweh”) after his call to follow Jesus. As a publican, Matthew worked at “the tax office” (Matthew 9:9, Mark 2:14, Luke 5:27), which could also be called a “toll booth” for collecting use fees.
