Referees, coaches, school administrators and league rules usually confront poor sportsmanship. What should the rest of the student body do? You should exhibit conduct that shows respect for others — your team and opponents. WHAT DOES SPORTSMANSHIP HAVE TO DO WITH ETHICS? Good sportsmanship is right conduct or ethical behavior. The rules of sportsmanship are similar to moral principles that govern a person’s or a group’s behavior. You learn ethical behavior at home and school, through religious teachings and athletic rules. WHAT IS THE ROOT OF “ETHICS”? The Greek philosopher Aristotle wrote many treatises, including about ta ethika, character, in the 300s B.C.E. The Greek word ethos means “custom” or “moral character.” Ethikos is the adjective meaning ethical. In the 13th century, the Old French word étique derived from the Late Latin ethica. These terms’ roots spring from the Greek ethike philosophia, “moral philosophy.” In France, a code of ethics is un code d’ éthique, medical ethics are éthique médicale, and an Ethics Committee is comité éthique.

The longtime NFL stars added an achievement that will without a doubt move to the top of their accolade-filled biographies when they were inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame inAugust, 2014. Jones and Brooks became the first pair of first-ballot Hall of Famers from the same class who attended the same college in over 40 years. The pair’s journey together started 20 years ago. Just as Brooks was wrapping up his All-America career at Florida State in 1994, Jones was joining the Seminoles out of Holmes Community College (Miss.) for the 1995 season. DERRICK BROOKS Linebacker 1991-94 2014 Pro Football Hall of Fame WALTER JONES Offensive Tackle 1995-96 2014 Pro Football Hall of Fame 138 PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME They never played on the same team at Florida State, but Jones distinctly remembers how excited he was to follow in the footsteps of the star linebacker whom he called the face of the Seminoles’ program. Jones and Brooks were the best at what they did for over a decade in the NFL. Brooks went to 11 Pro Bowls and never missed a game in 14 seasons (all with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers), while Jones became the NFL’s premier left tackle, going to nine Pro Bowls over 12 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. Both retired in 2008, and, six years later, Jones and Brooks were teammates for the first time as first-ballot Hall of Famers.

    WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? BJORN NITTMO? Kicker Bjorn Nittmo chased his NFL dream for more than a decade, including a stop in training camp with the Buffalo Bills. He became a recurring character on 'Late Night with David Letterman.' A head injury left Nittmo so shattered that he walked out on his wife and four children. Years later, he continues to drop in, unannounced and unkempt, before taking off again. His estranged family wants him to get help before it's too late. Eleven years ago he stopped coming home to his wife and four children. The youngest was 6 months old. He had lost part of his memory and still complains about the constant howling in his head from a concussive whomp. He has filed for bankruptcy and faced at least six civil judgments or liens. At some point he began using a different name. There might be a sinister reason to take on an alias, or perhaps he simply grew tired of people asking if he was that Bjorn Nittmo. Yes, he’s the same guy David Letterman introduced in 1989 as “the only Bjorn Nittmo in the New Jersey phonebook.” In actuality he’s the only Bjorn Nittmo in the world, though he is more peculiar than even that. Nittmo was the left-footed, southern-drawled, Swedish placekicker the media treated like a geegaw from a Cracker Barrel store.

    HE’S WITH WHO? Although only about eight percent of the free agents available switched teams this year, it seemed that this offseason contained an unusual amount of big-name switches through trades and free-agent signings. Five running backs coming off 1,000-yard performances in TRAVIS HENRY (now with Denver), THOMAS JONES (New York Jets), JAMAL LEWIS (Cleveland), AHMAN GREEN (Houston), and TATUM BELL (Detroit) will don new uniforms this season, as will running back WILLIS MC GAHEE (Baltimore), a two-time 1,000-yard rusher. Several quarterbacks, including TRENT GREEN (Miami) and MATT SCHAUB (Houston), will be under center for a new team this season. Five-time All-Star wide receiver RANDY MOSS will now catch passes from TOM BRADY in New England.     The Ensley Athletic Center is the latest major facilities addition to the Lampe Athletics Complex. The $13 million building was constructed in seven months and opened in January 2015. It serves as an indoor training center for the football program, as well as other sports. A multi- million dollar gift from Cliff Ensley, a walk-on who earned a football scholarship and became a three-sport standout at Syracuse in the late 1960s, combined with major gifts from Dick and Jean Thompson, made the construction of the 87,000 square-foot practice facility possible.
