Scott Lindsay 30 March 2014. i SUMMARY Neosporosis is a disease of worldwide distribution resulting from infection by the obligate intracellular apicomplexan protozoan parasite Neospora caninum, which is a major cause of infectious bovine abortion and a significant economic burden to the cattle industry. Definitive hosts are canid and an extensive range of identified susceptible intermediate hosts now includes native Australian species. Pilot experiments demonstrated the high disease susceptibility and the unexpected observation of rapid and prolific cyst formation in the fat-tailed dunnart (Sminthopsis crassicaudata) following inoculation with N. caninum. These findings contrast those in the immunocompetent rodent models and have enormous implications for the role of the dunnart as an animal model to study the molecular host-parasite interactions contributing to cyst formation. An immunohistochemical investigation of the dunnart host cellular response to inoculation with N. caninum was undertaken to determine if a detectable alteration contributes to cyst formation, compared with the eutherian models. Selective cell labelling was observed using novel antibodies developed against Tasmanian devil proteins (CD4, CD8, IgG and IgM) as well as appropriate labelling with additional antibodies targeting T cells (CD3), B cells (CD79b, PAX5), granulocytes, and the monocyte-macrophage family (MAC387). -

A number of stud- ies have demonstrated that red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) have a profound effect on the population biol- ogy of some species. However, not all species exposed to fox predation have declined. We studied the antipredator behaviour of a species that has not declined – the red-necked pademelon (Thylogale thetis), and contrasted it with previous studies on a species that has declined – the tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii), to try to understand behavioural factors associated with survival. We focused on two antipredator behaviours: predator recognition and the way in which antipredator vigilance is influ- enced by the presence of conspecifics. We found that predator-naïve pademelons responded to the sight of certain predators, suggesting that they had some degree of innate recognition ability. -

This phenomenon has been attributed to exceptional elastic energy storage and recovery via long compliant tendons in the legs. Alternatively, red kangaroos may have exceptionally efficient muscles. To estimate efficiency, we measured the metabolic cost of uphill hopping, where muscle fibers must perform mechanical work against gravity. We found that −1 uphill hopping was much more expensive than level hopping. The maximal rate of oxygen consumption measured (3 ml O2 kg s−1) exceeds all but a few vertebrate species. However, efficiency values were normal, 30%. At faster level hopping speeds the effective mechanical advantage of the extensor muscles of the ankle joint remained the same. Thus, kangaroos generate the same muscular force at all speeds but do so more rapidly at faster hopping speeds. This contradicts a recent hypothesis for what sets the cost of locomotion. The cost of transport (J kg−1 m−1) decreases at faster hopping speeds, yet red kangaroos prefer to use relatively slow speeds that avoid high levels of tendon stress. © 1998 Elsevier Science Inc. -
West Papua 2019
WEST PAPUA 2019 New Guinea is one of the most exciting places on earth, in terms of Biodiversity. The Indonesian part of the island, West Papua, with an incrediBle number of wildlife hotspots, hosts some of the most Bizarre mammals of the planet, such as Dingiso or Western Long-Beaked Equidna. This trip covered the main Birding localities with two exceptions, Biak and Numfor, But since we recorded an interesting number of mammals, I decided to write-up a short trip report to post in Mammalwatching.com. Though our trip was Bird-focussed, we tried to include as many mammals as possiBle. This report gives you an idea of what can Be seen with a little Bit of effort. OBviously, a mammal-orientated trip here would yield far more Bats, and rodents and more precious jewels, like Tree Kangaroos. West Papua is home to 250 mammals, 123 of which are endemic. Aside of this, few taxons are awaiting to Be descriBed and there is a chance to find undescriBed species for science. The status of many is not well-known, though over the past five years, I’ve made numerous visits this part of Indonesia and gained more knowledge on what is possiBle to see. On the three week visit in June 2019, we recorded 28 mammals, of which 3 are endemic of West Papua and 9 more are endemic of New Guinea. Many of the species are threatened due to high hunting pressure, for food. The Bird report, availaBle Below, includes the mammal list recorded By the group (Although not all my personal sights), and photos of several of these. -

The disappearing native mammals of northern Australia 1 SUMMARY Since European settlement, the deepest loss of Australian biodiversity has been the spate of extinctions of endemic mammals. Historically, these losses occurred mostly in inland and in temperate parts of the country, and largely between 1890 and 1950. A new wave of extinctions is now threatening Australian mammals, this time in northern Australia. Many mammal species are in sharp decline across the north, even in extensive natural areas managed primarily for conservation. The main evidence of this decline comes consistently from two contrasting sources: robust scientifi c monitoring programs and more broad-scale Indigenous knowledge. The main drivers of the mammal decline in northern Australia include inappropriate fi re regimes (too much fi re) and predation by feral cats. Cane Toads are also implicated, particularly to the recent catastrophic decline of the Northern Quoll. Furthermore, some impacts are due to vegetation changes associated with the pastoral industry. Disease could also be a factor, but to date there is little evidence for or against it. Based on current trends, many native mammals will become extinct in northern Australia in the next 10-20 years, and even the largest and most iconic national parks in northern Australia will lose native mammal species. This problem needs to be solved. The fi rst step towards a solution is to recognise the problem, and this publication seeks to alert the Australian community and decision makers to this urgent issue. -

How to participate in the Fairywren Project Step 1: Log in to eBird Step 2: Choose a participation level and contribute The Fairywren Project is interested in many aspects of fairywren behavior and ecology. We’ve broken down our data-collection into three levels of participation, beginning with the most important way to contribute. Whether you choose to participate at the basic, intermediate, or advanced level, any data you submit to eBird is a significant contribution! Basic Participation: Which plumage types are you seeing? The simplest, but by far the most important way to contribute to the project is to let us know what species and plumage types you’re seeing. We’ve divided plumage into five categories, one for females, three for males, and one for dull birds of unknown sex: Bright Male Plumage (b): A bright bird is one that is in full flashy breeding plumage and does not obviously show any dull feathers intermixed with bright feathers. A species bright plumage is typically the plumage the species is known and named for. Only males exhibit bright plumage. Intermediate Male Plumage (i): Intermediate plumage is a male in any stage between dull (no bright feathers) and completely bright (all bright feathers). An intermediate male may be actively molting, but some species are known to maintain intermediate plumages for months at a time. Dull Male Plumage (d): Dull male plumage is the species typical winter or non-breeding plumage (sometimes referred to as “eclipse” plumage). A male in dull plumage should show no bright body feathers, although some species like Superb Fairywrens often maintain blue tails year-round, even when in dull plumage. -

We will travel to several of the most important bird areas on the continent, searching out birds, mammals and wildflowers from the common to the rare and most elusive. We expect the field list from either of these parts to represent close to 50% of the species of Australia, which is half of Australia’s regular birds in two weeks of birding. We have designed all sections to allow flexibility for those who may have already enjoyed a birding trip to Australia, but missed some of the key sites. It also caters to those who have never visited Australia and wish to experience the whole spectrum of this diverse country by taking all three sections. Travelling in Australia is a delight; friendly people, excellent roads and hotels, reliable airlines, plenty of fresh produce and tasty food. You can drink the water and eat the salads! On this tour we make a number of two and even three-night stays and travel in a vehicle that affords excellent viewing and an abundance of seats! Australia’s geographic isolation has resulted in the evolution of a remarkable array of endemic birds and other wildlife. More than 300 species and eight families are endemic (making it one of the richest in the world). Colorful parrots, fairywrens, finches and honeyeaters light up the environment while giant Cassowary and Emu, peculiar bowerbirds and birds-of-paradise make their home down under.
