Interview with Jackie Robinson
It's Pioneers month (December 2002) here at TrojanRecords.com, so we've sought out an insightful interview with the group's Jackie Robinson from January 2001. All questions put forward by Laurence Cane-Honeysett. Laurence Cane-Honeysett: Can you tell me a little about the early days? Jackie Robinson: The Pioneers were formed in the early ‘60’s to mid 1960’s, with Winston Hewitt, Sydney Crooks and his brother, Derrick Crooks. I think Winston Hewitt migrated to Canada. He was replaced by Glen Adams around 1966-67. The group broke up subsequently. So how did you become involved with the group? I met Sydney Crooks at West Indies Studio early 1967 and together we reformed the group as a duo. Our first single, - written by Sydney - was ‘Gimme Little Loving’, which went to number three in the Jamaican charts. The follow-up, written by both of us, was ‘Long Shot Bus Me Bet’ which went to number 4 in the Jamaican charts. Incidentally, both were in the charts at the same time. Subsequent releases that we co-wrote were ‘Tickle Me’, ‘Catch The Beat’ and ‘Jackpot’. At this time we were recording for Joe Gibbs on his Amalgamated Records label. ‘Jackpot’ was covered by the (UK) Beat around 1980 on their ‘Gold’ album and was featured on the B side of their top three hit, ‘Mirror in the Bathroom’. After your spell with Joe Gibbs, you moved to Leslie Kong’s Beverley’s label? In 1968 we switched labels to Beverley’s Records and invited George Agard to join the group. -

Jamaican Migrant and Canadian Host in Toronto's Transnational Re
King Alpha’s Song in a Strange Land: Jamaican Migrant and Canadian Host in Toronto’s Transnational Reggae Music Scene, 1973-1990 by John Jason Collins Wilson A dissertation Presented to The University of Guelph In partial fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Guelph, Ontario, Canada © John Jason Collins Wilson, May 2013 ABSTRACT King Alpha’s Song in a Strange Land: Jamaican Migrant and Canadian Host in Toronto’s Transnational Reggae Music Scene, 1973-1990 John Jason Collins Wilson Advisor: University of Guelph, 2013 Doctor Catharine Wilson Reggae music facilitated a cultural dialogue between Jamaican migrant and Canadian host in Toronto during the 1970s and 1980s. Exchanges flowed across the city’s ethnic frontier, bridging black and white youth together in an ‘oppositional’ and musical movement. While migrants enacted their Jamaican ethnicity in places where reggae was played, many non-Jamaicans satisfied a curiosity in the music of their migrant friends. This study examines the process of migration of people and music as seen from both the migrant and the host’s perspective. It is as much about black Jamaicans as it is about white Torontonians. Twenty Jamaicans and twenty non-Jamaicans were interviewed for this project. Though reggae became an expected part of Toronto’s musical vernacular, the Canadian version meant different things to different people. Indeed, sometimes the only thread that tied the varied experiences together was that Toronto was the place where reggae happened. Still, as a hybrid, reggae had rather evolved outside of place. It was a transnational musical form, constantly updated by influences traversing the ‘Black Atlantic’ in an on-going and triangular musical conversation. -
Song of the Day Lxxxiii
SONG OF THE DAY LXXXIII Today, like in SOTD LXXIX, we are going to examine two songs, and, just like that previous SOTD, I‟m certain this one will rankle some feathers as well. Today‟s song originally was released on Led Zeppelin‟s debut album, side two, track two, clocking in at just 2:12; the beautiful and eerie “Black Mountain Side.” It was also issued on “Box Set I” as “White Summer/Black Mountain Side,” and that one clocked in at 8:01. So, either grab your copy of “Zep I,” or disc one of “Box Set” one, as we take a look inside Jimmy‟s instrumental showpiece for much of his touring career. Before we dive into these two numbers, one thing must be addressed; Jimmy did not write either of these songs. Despite what the credits say on “Led Zeppelin I” or “Box Set” one, both of these songs were traditional Irish folk songs. “Black Mountain Side” was originally known as “Down By Blackwaterside” and later became known simply as “Black Waterside” when guitar legend Bert Jansch recorded it on his 1966 album, “Jack Orion.” On that album, Jansch listed the credit as “traditional.” “White Summer” was recorded and released in 1962 by Davey Graham, another great British guitarist, under the title that it had long been known as; “She Moved Through The Fair.” In fact, not only did Graham record a version that mirrors “White Summer” almost to a T, but it was Graham who invented the tuning that both of these songs are in; D-A-D-G-A-D. -
