Digital Nutrition In a recent meeting I was introduced to the concept of Digital Nutrition by psychologist Jocelyn Brewer. Rather than be judgmental about what is ‘good’ and ‘bad’ technology, Brewer challenges us to think about the way we consume digital content in the same way we have learnt to consider food and its impact on wellbeing. The three M’s of digital nutri- tion are Mindful, Meaningful and Moderate. “Being mindful means you’d benefit from pausing, and thinking more broadly about how what you do, say, click on and scroll through impacts your overall health and wellbeing (one swipe at a time)… Meaningful in that you have a sense of purpose and clarity in regard to what you’re reading, commenting on or participating in. That the Orchestra selected to perform in the Opera activities contribute, even in a small way, to your House: This is an amazing achievement by goals and values… Moderate in that you’re able Pittwater High Orchestra who had to audition and to regulate and temper your habits and usage, compete against selective school orchestras to be and avoid negative impacts across other aspects selected. I am always in awe of the talent of this of your life. Moderation means that you both group of musicians who create an incredibly rich use technology in moderated amounts of time, sound. They will be performing in the Concert Hall but also are able to moderate what you say and on the evening of 5 September Egyptian Legacy, so how you react to things that show up in your online join me in the audience. world.” In the same way we try to be mindful of the food we eat and moderate intake of junk food, the Renee Andrews to relieve as principal at Ku-ring- same applies to our digital nutrition. Symphonic Band at Opera House 23 June Technology Information Students who have devices, including mobile phones on the internet are able to use AirDrop. This means that they can wirelessly send photos, videos, websites, locations, and more to a nearby iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac. Most students who regularly use AirDrop on the iPhone or iPad frequently leave the function turned on for share requests however, it is important to take a moment to adjust a simple privacy setting for the feature, allowing the iOS device to be only discoverable by Contacts. It is important that the setting be changed, following the instructions below. This will prevent AirDrop requests coming in from random or unknown users, especially when there are many users, with many iPhone and iPads, in your vicinity. This is a great way to limit AirDrop sharing options to those you trust. If some- one does not appear in a contacts list, they cannot share with the iOS device. Dear Parents

Pittwater Council has asked that all High School students refrain from using the children’s playground in Winnererremy Bay, next to Pittwater High School, as it is becoming a safety issue with the smaller children who use this facility.

Please remind your child that this area is for small children only.

Thank you.

After months of hard work and preparation, Pittwater High’s four Da Vinci Decathlon teams recently made the trip to Knox Grammar School to compete against some of the most academically gifted students in the state. The da Vinci Decathlon is an academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of school students. Students compete in teams of eight across 10 disciplines: engineering, mathematics, code breaking, art and poetry, science, English, ideation, creative producers, cartography and general knowledge. This year over 40 schools competed in each year group. Pittwater High was proud to be one of only two comprehen- sive schools amongst the sea of blazers and boaters belonging to our private and selective school counterparts. Despite being initially daunted by the grandiosity of the event, our teams steeled their nerves and participated with great gusto and precision to produce some fantastic results:

The bountiful spoils of hiking continues in the Duke of Edinburgh program at Pittwater High School.

On the 20 May, thankfully, I can say, 19 Year 10 students completing their Silver award have returned home safe and well after an exhilarating experience in bush land North West of . The qualifying Silver hike was held in the Yengo National Park, which is nearly 2 hour drive from PHS. The hike consisted of 3 days of hiking through vicious vegetation, steep undulating ridgelines, fast flowing creeks, copious amounts of leeches (just ask Mr Cornish) and the grateful prediction that cold wet weather was expected throughout the hike. However, with a grim description posted from the overall 3 day experience, nothing could wipe the smiles off this dedicated group of intrepid adventures. The positive attitude, constant collaboration and infectious enthusiasm shared between this group made it an absolute highlight and pleasure to have shared such a challenging journey. They are all prepared to add more memories to the ever-growing book of adventures with the Test Hike scheduled for 18-20 August at Turon National Park Also, a special mention and a MASSIVE thanks goes to Mr Cornish in bringing good looks, passion and a great sense of humour to the teaching team whilst on the Hike! Luke Trout Fractured Fairy tales Assessment Year 10 have spent the last 14 weeks completing their assessment on producing a costume to reflect their favourite fairy tale. The class has worked so hard on completing folio work plus the practical section of the task. Mrs Roulston is very impressed with the techniques and how well they have applied their knowledge and skills to produce such quality work.

Ms Roulston Kids with Agriculture students as well as the rest of the school community are loving the temporary additions to our animal family. Leesa from Petite Bleats has kindly loaned us one of her gorgeous miniature goat nannies (Domino) and her two beautiful boys (whose names differ depending on who you ask). The two boys have been bought by Bilgola Plateau Primary and when they are weaned they will move into their new home and Domino will return to her friends at Petite Bleats. In the meantime, Year 10 Agriculture students are becoming familiar with husbandry practices associated with goats. Ben Brown from Sydney Animal Hospitals is coming to assist with some of these procedures and to discuss pest and disease management in the species. In addition to the arduous task of cuddling goats, Year 10 Agriculture students are learning about marketing goat products, market trends, economics, welfare and environ- mental problems and solutions associated with keeping goats. We recently, formally thanked our dedicated Peer Support Leaders with a “thank you” morning tea and pre- sented them with a beautiful certificate of appreciation.

The 46 Year 10 students, who formed our Peer Support leaders, were a fantastic group of patient, supportive and capable students who willingly gave up their time to assist and guide the Year 7 students, ensuring their transition into high school was a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Thank you to all our Peer Support Leaders for your time and effort.

Mrs T Lagois and Mr B Bryant During Week 5 of Term 2, Year 10 Advanced VET Hospitality Students completed 35 hours of mandatory work placement for Hospitality. They worked in a number of quality restaurants, cafes and function centres across the Northern Beaches and Sydney. The opportunity of workplace- ment enables the students to be a part of a commercial kitchen and to gain experience of the day to day runnings of a Hospitality establishment.

There were many great experiences, which included plating dishes which were served to customers, making desserts, cutting up bags and bags of vegetables, peeling kilos of prawns, washing and peeling fruit and preparing dishes from scratch. Not to mention cleaning the equipment used in commercial kitchens.

Congratulations to all students involved. We are very proud of your participation and dedication during the week. There are many tired students, with aching feet and legs from standing all day, every day. A couple of students commented that they intended to go home and complete school work, but they were so tired they fell into bed and there was no chance of any work getting done until the weekend! At the end of the week, some students were offered part time jobs after their placement and a couple of students were even asked if they wanted an apprenticeship with the company. This shows that they were very valued by their employers!

We would like to thank the various workplaces who hosted our students for the week. Some of these included Pittwater RSL, Manly Pavillion, Pilu at Freshwater, Stella Blu, The Pullman Hotel Sydney and H20 café Narrabeen.

Mrs T Lagois

The Open Boys Soccer campaign ended recently after a very courageous, heart felt journey shared amongst the playing group. With show stopping performances against Killarney Height HS and Randwick Boys HS, we thought this was the year that the feverish football community at PHS would carry our dreams towards the lofty goals of a NSW state 16 finish. The players were hitting their straps, the team morale was bursting at the seams and the foot- ball gods were predicating a grandstand finish. But, alas we were literally derailed in the final game against Epping Boys HS with a hugely controversial refereeing decision. The result, an obvious disappointing experience seen by the raw emotions of the play- ers, but an opportunity to build determination and passion to play better in life’s future lessons ahead. Thanks gentle- men for the shared memories, we gave it a great crack!

The team included Year 12 Liam Webber, Luke Trbojevic, Marcus Larosa, Liam Doherty, Noah Coopey, Elijah Bucknell, Lachie Creagh, Jordan Biggs, Callum Groves, Zac Dinter, Harry Binding, Chris Knezevic. Year 11 Will Sides. Year 10 Raffy Alas.

The outstanding Luke Trbojevic was involved in both tries, one to Callum Bowden and the second to Aiden Reeks, that finished with a great cut out ball from Justin Mills. If the rugby league gods were on our side, we would have won this one; it was very close. Next up was against the formidable Narrabeen Sports, who eventually were declared champions on the day. The boys were not up for this game and were over run 20-4. One positive was a freakish try from Aiden “two try “ Reeks off a Luke Trbojevic bomb, where he showed great reflexes in catching and scoring off an unpredictable bounce. Finally, we defeated The Forest High 22-16 with tries to Although depleted through injuries and illness, the Felix Hodgson, Callum Bowden, Levi Stevenson and Ryan Pittwater High open rugby league team represented the Avedissian, off a fantastic “Beetson-like” pass from Callum school with distinction at the University shield gala day. The boys displayed a lot of skill and heart as they Luke Trbojevic was our best all day, proving a handful for produced some outstanding rugby league. With six very the opposition every time he touched the ball and super experienced players being unavailable for a variety of strong in defence, constantly inspiring his team mates. reasons, PHS still won three of its five games, to finish Halves Harry Binding and Pat Gilliland were also strong, third overall out of six schools. with the latter making a number of breaks and very brave, We began with a 10 nil victory over Cromer High with with a great technique in defence (a legend according to Luke Trbojevic sealing the match with an impressive 50m his team mates). Justin Mills of year 11 demonstrated that try, beating at least half a dozen defenders, after the he was not just a strong ball runner but possesses strong running Justin Mills, put us in the lead. Other year 11’s also stepped up won a nailbiter against Manly Selective, winning 16-12 on and showed their ability in Callum, Ryan and Lewis the bell, with Kane Renshaw being the matchwinner, Cervantes. Lewis displayed incredible versatility, packing scoring his second try of the game. It was a try to savour, into the front row at one stage but also along with Zane with the ball passing through at least ten sets of hands- Franks of year 10, leading our attack from dummy half and schoolboy rugby league at its best. Tyler Crichton scored hooker when our older players picked up injuries, late in our opening try in this game. We then lost a tight one the tournament. Australian Army Cadets is a national youth development organisation that provides young adult with the skills and the confidence to excel in all aspects of life through challenging and rewarding experiences. At 201 ACU we inspire cadets to do their best to fulfil our core values of courage, initiative, teamwork and respect by providing opportunities to build leadership skills, communication skills, camaraderie as well as lasting friendships. The Australian Army Cadets is also recognised under the Duke of Edinburgh scheme as all three requirements; service, physical recreation, and skills. We have a large community involvement with ANZAC services, learn practical skills such as first aid and navigation, and provide rewarding physical activities. Although we adopt the traditional Army values, dress and bearing, our purpose is purely youth development and there is no expectation for cadets to enlist in the Australian Defence Force.
