Series: Types of Christ Title: Christ in the Molten Sea Text: 2 Chronicles 4: 2-6, 10 Date: October 9, 2014 Place: SGBC, New Jersey For you who do not have a heart to rejoice in Christ, you think the gospel does not relate to you. But everything about the gospel relates to you. You will either be a vessel of mercy to glorify Christ or a vessel of wrath to glorify Christ. Every smallest detail of your life is being worked together by God—in mercy or wrath—for the glorification of his Son and the good of his people. One of the ways we see that God uses every detail to bring glory to his Son is in the way God used even every piece of furniture in the temple to glorify Christ. In our text, we will see that thousands of years before Christ came, God used one piece of furniture in Solomon’s temple, to declare the glory of Christ and the work he accomplishes for his people on the cross and in his people through the preaching of the gospel. This ought to make us see how God is working in every small detail in history and in our own lives to glorify his Son. It ought to make you pay attention to my gospel and to seek Christ while he may be found. Our subject is Christ in the Molten Sea 2 Chronicles 4: 2: Also he made a molten sea of ten cubits from brim to brim, round in compass, and five cubits the height thereof; and a line of thirty cubits did compass it round about. -

God’s Faithfulness in the Book of Ruth 1. Introduction. A. Read: Ruth 4:18-22 - 18 This, then, is the family line of Perez: Perez was the father of Hezron, 19 Hezron the father of Ram, Ram the father of Amminadab, 20 Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, 21 Salmon the father of Boaz, Boaz the father of Obed, 22 Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David. [slide 1] B. We’ve been gleaning from the book of Ruth over the past couple of months, trying to take a magnifying glass to see some of what God is speaking to us from this book. Now, after all of the tragedy and hope, despair and celebration, drama and romance, we come to this conclusion - a genealogy?! C. I’ve been part of the Navigators and they have memory verse packs, but I don’t think this passage was in there. Would you put it in there? Probably not! Especially if you memorized the King James version: Perez begat Hezron, Hezron begat Ram … all the way to Jesse begat David. The book of Ruth is a great story, but you think it is a little weak on the ending? D. We said early on in this study that the author of this book was very skillful. The skill in story-telling shows up in the way he ends this book. You and I have been looking at details in this book and now the author is backing us out of the fields, out of Bethlehem, to a bigger picture. -

Next week we will begin reading the Parables of Jesus from the Gospel of Matthew. Big Idea of the Lesson: God is the active mover of redemption when He is both seen and unseen. The redemption story in Ruth is fully realized and offered to all in the Jubilee brought by Christ Jesus. Key Verses: Deuteronomy 25:5-10 Leviticus 25:10-13, 23-25 Luke 4:18-21 Key Words: In verse 1, the use of “friend” is an inadequate translation. A better equivalency is “So and So,” which is a statement that the kinsman does not respond as a proper redeemer, making him not worth remembering or recording. Names matter in the Old Testament; he has no name. Jubilee – This word does not appear in the text, but it lives in the story's background. Jubilee was supposed to be observed every 50th year (after 7 cycles of 7 years). A ram's horn would be blown to demark the year, slaves would be freed, debt cleared, land returned to the ancestorial family, and the people of God, animals, and land would rest for the entire year. Jubilee is a reminder and statement of who owns the land, people, and possessions; God is the owner. All that Israel had was a gift from God. It is not the year of Jubilee in Ruth. So Boaz must work as Kinsman-Redeemer per Levitical law because, without his intervention, Naomi's land and her and Ruth's freedom will be lost until the Jubilee year. -

Edwards, Pastor Because of her profession, Rahab, a Canaanite woman, was always identified as a harlot. Because of her expressed faith in a forgiving and merciful God, Rahab became a heroine to her family, the first Gentile to be welcomed into God’s family, and one of the mothers in the lineage of Jesus. Even though she was a Gentile, the writer of Hebrews included Rahab in the Hebrew Hall of Faith; identifying her as the woman who did not perish, like those who were disobedient. Even though she worked as a prostitute, and lied to the king’s messengers, James, the half-brother of Jesus, said Rahab was “justified by her works when she received the messengers and sent them another way.” The reason the story of Rahab is in the Scriptures is to show us that God delights to display the glory of His grace, and the wonders of His love, to and through the least likely candidates. The New Testament lists two genealogies of Jesus. Luke 3:23-38 is the ascending record of Jesus’ family tree, beginning with the birth of Jesus to Mary, and then tracing His lineage back 77-generations to Adam. Luke wrote his genealogy of Jesus to prove His humanity. Matthew 1:1-17 is the descending record of Jesus’ family tree, beginning with Abraham and tracing his lineage forward 42-generations to Joseph. -

1 Kings Chapter 7 Continued Verses 23-39: The “molten sea” was cast in one bronze piece by Hiram. It was set upon “twelve” bronze “oxen” (or bulls), which were later removed by Ahaz who replaced them with a stone base (2 Kings 16:17). “The sea” took the place of the laver of the tabernacle and was used for the ritual washing of the priests. Five moveable bronze basins stood on either side of the molten sea, which were used for the rinsing of the burnt offerings (Exodus 30:17-21 with 2 Chron. 4:6). The quantity of water held by the molten sea is given here as “two thousand baths,” probably the correct figure in the light of its measurements. The “three thousand baths” (of 2 Chron. 4:5), was probably miscopied. 1 Kings 7:23 "And he made a molten sea, ten cubits from the one brim to the other: [it was] round all about, and his height [was] five cubits: and a line of thirty cubits did compass it round about." “Molten sea”: A huge circular bronze basin corresponding to the laver of the tabernacle. According to (verse 26), this great basin’s capacity was about 12,000 gallons (see note on 2 Chron. 4:5). The sea stood in the courtyard on the temple’s southeast side and provided the priests water to wash themselves and their sacrifices (2 Chron. 4:5). It probably also supplied water for the 10 movable basins (verses 38-39; see note on 2 Chron. 4:2). This is a tremendous brass bowl for water for the oblations. -

Commentators and researchers have put forward various suggestions as to the form of the Molten Sea and its purpose in the temple. In this article, I argue that the description in 1 Kings offers definitive conclusions בת as to the biblical author’s intent regarding the form of the “Sea” and its volume (in units), and can resolve the outstanding question in the literature as to the equivalent -in modern units of volume measurement. I shall also point to evidence in sup בת of a port of the view of other researchers that the Molten Sea held a purely symbolic role, while the practical functions of water for sacrificial purposes were provided by the bases (1 Kgs 7:27). These attempts have not been very fruitful, since none of these regions have provided true paral- lels for Solomon’s Temple in terms of its fundamental attrib- utes. The search then turned to regions closer to Canaan, such as Syria, and the land from which the Temple’s builders and engineers were drawn from—Phoenicia (I Kings 5:32). Elements of Solomon’s Temple have been found in certain temples within the Holy Land—such as those at Beit Shean, Lakhish, and Meggido. These feature a tripartite structure, but unlike Solomon’s Temple, their chambers are not sequen- tial, nor are they of equal width. The uncovering of the tem- ples at Tel Taayinat and at Ain Dara in Syria, sparked excite- ment among researchers, who almost unanimously hailed them as parallels of Solomon’s Temple2)—given that they, too, were built in the Iron Age, were long-room temples with a tripartite structure, and featured two columns at the entrance. Yevin3) argued that evidence of the reconstruction of the First Temple should be sought at sites in northern Mesopotamia, Syria, and Phoenicia. He focused on archeo- logical findings of temples built in the “royal acropolis” style, at Alalakh, Byblos, Ghozan, Dor Sruchkin (Khors- abad), Hamat, Carcamish, and Shmal (Zangrili). He also mentioned the temple at Tel Taayinat, whose description had not yet been fully published when he was writing up his research. Who Was the Widows Son?
Who was the Widows Son? Who was the “Widow’s Son”? The answer might seem easily answered, but when one reads of legends, scripture writings, the Apocrypha and other historical documents it becomes apparent that perhaps we cannot answer this question so easily. In the writings of Masonic scholars we learn of Hiram Abiff, “The Widow’s Son”. There are others referred to as “The Widow’s Son”. It seems this is a title to which more than one can be named. The use of the title is actually traced back to the Grail lore traditions which speak of a descended blood line and specifically reference Ruth. Ruth, a woman of the Moabite tribe, was married to Boaz, and she was a heroine of the Old Testament. She was also the Great Grandmother of King David. That King David, the father of King Solomon, who built the Temple? Ruth became pregnant, and married Boaz. He was quite a bit older being 80, while Ruth was 40. The book says that Boaz dies the next day. That must have been some wedding night. From this point on, all the descendants of Ruth, were known simply as “Sons of the Widow”. A genetic title if you will. A genealogy can be traced. Ruth gives birth to the first “Son of the Widow”, Obed, who grows up and bears his son Jesse, who bears his son David who bears his sons Solomon and Nathan. Using the lineage given in the Gospels of the Christian Bible, Jesus the Nazarene is a descendant of Ruth, making him also, a “Son of the Widow” or “Widow’s Son”. -

Eve & Adam God created the first man and woman as the first family. They made a horrible choice to sin against God. But God had a perfect plan to rescue them and all of us. It’s the first promise. (Genesis 3:15) 1 Noah & Wife God told Noah to build a big boat called an ark. God was going to Seth send rain to destroy the earth through a flood. It had never rained Cain was wicked. When Adam was 130 years old, he had another son before. The people mocked Noah for building the ark but God named Seth. God had chosen another man from which He would bring the promised to save Noah, his wife and sons. Noah lived another Messiah. Then men began calling on the Lord again. (Genesis 4:25-26) 350 years after he and his family left the ark. Each son went a different direction and Shem stayed in the same region as the ark landed. It is believed that Abraham is part of Shem’s family. 2 3 Abraham & Sarah Shem God spoke to Abraham and told him to pack up his wife and his house- hold (which was a lot of people that worked for him and all their animals) Noah had three sons. Shem, Ham and Japeth. Ham went south (Israel, and move to another place. God didn’t tell him where but told him to get Egypt, Africa), Japeth went north (Europe) and Shem made his life going. (Genesis 12) They had no children but a nephew named Lot. -

The diameter of the sea was measured from the inside, and if its circumference was measured from the outside, this ratio is no longer accurate.
