Carr (1961), an influential British historian, history was an attempt to understand and interpret the past, to explain the causes and origins of things in intelligible terms. • Carr focused on wider forces in society that caused outcomes in society and politics, economic change, industrialization, class formation and class conflict. • The purpose of history was to understand the present and mould the future.
