Rules Primer
RULES PRIMER ales of Xadia: The Dragon Prince is a tabletop roleplaying T game about people who experience love, war, family, heartbreak, and triumph in the world of Wonderstorm’s The Dragon Prince. With your friends, you create characters using familiar archetypes from the show. In your shared imagination, you forge alliances, uncover secrets, engage in mighty battles, and protect those you love from peril and prophecy. Work together or at cross- purposes… or both! Whatever your chosen path, your characters explore the mysteries of the elves, the human kingdoms, and the dragons, as well as the primal sources that flow through everything. What’s in this Book Tales of Xadia uses the Cortex game system. This rules primer introduces you to key elements of Cortex as it appears in this game, from bringing life to characters of your own creation to spinning tales of wonder and magic. TheTales of Xadia: The Dragon Prince Roleplaying Game Handbook covers all of this and more in much greater detail. Setup: This is an overview of what you need in order to play a game of Tales of Xadia. Your Character: We examine an example character—Rayla, the Moonshadow elf assassin from the show—and how the game represents her in the form of her character journal. Playing the Game: These are the Cortex system rules you need to know as a player, from making decisions and rolling dice to tracking stress and keeping notes. Running the Game: These are the Cortex system rules for running the game as the Narrator, including using scenes and sessions to help the players tell the story of their characters, and playing the part of Narrator characters. -

The Dragon Prince Jumpchain Version 1.0 Once, Xadia Was One
The Dragon Prince Jumpchain Version 1.0 Once, Xadia was one land, rich in magic and wonder. In the old times there were only the six Primal Sources of magic; the Sun, the Moon, the Stars, the Earth, the Sky, and the Ocean. But a thousand years ago, a human mage discovered new magic, the Seventh Source, Dark Magic. It used the essence within magical creatures themselves to unleash dark power. Horrified by what they saw, the Elves and the Dragons put a stop to the madness. They drove every last human to the West, and so the continent was divided in two. In the East, the magical lands of Xadia, and to the West, the Human Kingdoms. For centuries, the King of the Dragons himself defended the border. The Humans called him Thunder, for when he spoke, his voice shook the earth and the sky. But, on the eve of last Winter’s turn, the Humans used unspeakable Dark Magic to slay Thunder. Then, without mercy, they destroyed his only egg, his heir, the Dragon Prince. Now the world stands on the edge of outright war. Well, maybe not entirely. Thunder’s egg was not destroyed, but secreted away by a Dark Mage for his own purposes. Three weeks after you insert into this world, on the night of the full moon, Moonshadow Elves will infiltrate the Kingdom of Katolis to assassinate King Harrow in revenge for the deaths of Thunder and his son, leading the two princes to discover the egg and undertake a quest to return it to its mother and avert the coming war. -

I Might Not Ever Be the Perfect Hero
Maria Zharkevich "I MIGHT NOT EVER BE THE PERFECT HERO EVERYBODY WANTS ME TO BE, BUT THAT'S OKAY.": Examining New Girl Heroes of the 21st Century in Animated Fantasy Series Aimed at Young Audiences Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Master’s Thesis April 2020 ABSTRACT Maria Zharkevich: "I might not ever be the perfect hero everybody wants me to be, but that's okay.": Examining New Girl Heroes of the 21st Century in Animated Fantasy Series Aimed at Young Audiences Master’s Thesis Tampere University Master's Programme in English Language and Literature April 2020 There is a recent increasing and notable demand for more female-centric stories and better female representation in media and one field where this demand has been answered is western animation. While research on female representation and female heroes in tv and film aimed at mature audiences has been done quite widely (for example Hohenstein, 2019; Tigges, 2017; Stabile, 2009) naturally there has not yet been a notable amount of research into newer animated series aimed at younger viewers that have responded to this demand for representation. As such, this thesis looks into the subject of girls as heroes (excluding super heroes, as they are a different category of hero) in recent major animated series aimed at younger audiences, using She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018-), The Legend of Korra (2012-2014) and the Dragon Prince (2018-) as primary analysis material. This thesis specifically examines shows aimed at young viewers that feature young female protagonists who are decidedly not adults yet. -
The Dragon Prince Jumpchain by Heavenicarus 1.1 Lore in the Lands
The Dragon Prince Jumpchain by Heavenicarus 1.1 Lore In the Lands of Xadia, there are Six Primal Sources of magic. The Skies, The Seas, The Earth, The Stars, The Sun, and The Moon. Humans discovered the seventh magic, Dark magic, and for this act were cast out of the lands of Xadia, and the continent was split in half to prevent their return. Now, a thousand years after this, the human kings recently murdered the king of the dragons and shattered his only egg. However, this last part was lie, and now two human princes forge an unlikely bond with an elven assassin sent to kill them and embark on an epic quest to bring peace to their warring lands by bringing the egg home. You, jumper, will be on one side of this conflict or another, chose wisely. Backgrounds Prince (Drop-in): You are now third in line for the throne of Katolis, behind your new brothers Ezrin and Callum. No one will question it, even if you choose to be an elf or dragon. You’ll have memories of being raised by King Harrow and if your old enough, Queen Sarai. You’re dropped in your room; being told you must get going to the Banther lodge before the moon raises. Your age is 6+1d8 Assassin: Trained from a young age, you are an assassin with the skills to kill almost anyone. Of course, maybe you “accidently” let a few people go now and again. Crown Guard: You are part of the king’s guard. Monster slayer, border guardian, and highly trained badass warriors, the lot of them. -
Revisiting the Dragon Princess Her Role in Medieval Engi Stories and Their Implications in Reading the Lotus Sutra
Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 42/1: 27–70 © 2015 Nanzan Institute for Religion and Culture Ryūichi Abé Revisiting the Dragon Princess Her Role in Medieval Engi Stories and Their Implications in Reading the Lotus Sutra This article examines how the Dragon Princess, one of the most celebrated characters in the Lotus Sutra, is represented in the noh drama Ama and the Heike Nōkyō sutra set. By doing so, it debunks the prevailing consensus in understanding the Dragon Princess and her episode in the sutra, and illus- trates a hitherto unnoticed intrinsic affinity between medieval Japanese engi stories and Buddhist scriptural narratives. keywords: Lotus Sutra—Dragon Princess—henjō nanshi—ryūnyo jōbutsu— Buddhism—gender and narrativity—Heike nōkyō—ama (female diver) Ryūichi Abé is Edwin O. Reischauer Institute Professor of Japanese Religions, Harvard University. 27 he Heike nōkyō, a twelfth-century set of thirty-three scriptural scrolls preserved at Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima Prefecture, is one of the most sumptuous and elaborate examples of medieval Japanese illustrated TBuddhist scriptural manuscripts. One of the scrolls, the “Devadatta” chapter of the Lotus Sutra, bears a frontispiece that features the Dragon Princess, the cel- ebrated protagonist of the chapter (figure 1). The illustration is arguably the most sublime representation of the princess in visual art. Although recent stud- ies of the Dragon Princess have made her famous for her sudden change of sex and transformation into a Buddha, the princess in the frontispiece simply offers her jewel to the Buddha. She shows no sign of physical metamorphosis. What sort of interpretive strategies are required to understand her act as represented in the frontispiece? Engi Literature and Buddhist Scriptural Narratives This article aims at illustrating an intrinsic affinity between medieval Japanese engi 縁起 materials in textual, performative, and visual genres, and Buddhist scriptural materials. -

Educator Guide & Walking
The Field Museum Education Department Presents Educator Guide & Walking Map The Field Museum’s Education Department develops on-line Educator Guides to provide detailed information on field trip planning, alignment with Illinois State Standards (ILS), as well as hands-on classroom activities to do before and after your visit to the Museum. Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids is organized by the American Museum of Natural History, New York, in collaboration with The Field Museum, Chicago; Canadian Museum of Civilization, Gatineau; Australian National Maritime Museum, Sydney; and Fernbank Museum of Natural History, Atlanta. Lead Sponsor: Educator Notes MYTHIC CREATURES Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids March 19 through September 1, 2008 Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids uses paintings, life-size models, and cultural objects from around the world to shed light on the ways people have been inspired by nature to depict strange and wonderful creatures. From Pliny the Elder who, in 77 C.E., asserted that mermaids were “no fabulous tale,” to today’s sightings of Scotland’s famous yet unsubstantiated Loch Ness Monster, mythic creatures delight and mystify us all. Mythic Creatures features fossils of prehistoric animals and preserved specimens to investigate and illustrate how they could have—through imagination, speculation and even fear—inspired the development of some legendary creatures. For instance, Scythian nomads of southeastern Europe may have mistaken dinosaur fossils for the remains of griffins and narwhal tusks from the North Sea likely offered credibility to the belief in the unicorn. Throughout the exhibition, models of mythical creatures astound and delight. Come face-to-face with a 17-foot- long dragon with a wingspan of over 19 feet; a 10-foot-long unicorn; an 11-foot-long Roc with a wingspan of nearly 20 feet and huge talons sweeping overhead; and a kraken, whose 12-foot-long tentacles appear to rise out of the floor as if surfacing from the sea. -

The Development of Beauty and Beast Through 31 Revisions of the Tale Beth Reith April 28, 2006 Faculty Advisor: Honor Wallace University of Tennessee Senior Honors Project Reith 2 Abstract Although most are familiar with the Disney retelling of Beauty and the Beast, there are many other versions. These versions go all the way back to the 2nd century AD and all the way forward to the present. In these tales there is a trend from individuality and differences in the beginning, to uniformity in the middle, to a return to unique individual tales. This trend can be seen in the development of the characters of Beauty and Beast throughout the revisions, and by how the transformation at the end is portrayed.
