Australian Plants Society Yarra Yarra Group Inc (Incorporation No. A0039676Y) Newsletter May 2018 May 3: Maree & Graham Goods : Gardening in the Wimmera Graham & Maree come from a farming and administration background. They are Life Members of the Wimmera Growers of Australian Plants of which they have been members for over 40 years. Their garden has been open to the public on several occasions for various charities. They ran a wholesale nursery for several years specialising in Eremophilas. Graham and Maree’s current project is growing plants, landscaping and overseeing the planting of the gardens surrounding the new building of their Church which was opened recently. They first became involved with Australia’s inland deserts in 2002 with an organisation called Desert Discovery as part of the Botany team. In 2008, Maree became the Botany Team Leader, while Graham was involved with the photography and identification of specimens. They have done volunteer work for Australian Wildlife Conservancy, Friends of the Great Victoria Desert, Victorian and Western Australian Herbariums in collecting, identifying and processing specimens. Australian Plants Suitable for Tamworth Regional Council Areas Eucalyptus blakelyi Photo Tony Croft Tamworth Group of Australian Plants Society As at July 2007 Eucalyptus blakelyi II TAMWORTH REGIONAL COUNCIL RAINFALL DATA Most of the Tamworth Regional Council area receives an average annual rainfall of 600 to 800mm except for the north- west corner on the Mount Kaputar plateau and the tablelands country from Bendemeer through Woolbrook to Hanging Rock above Nundle which often receives between 800 to 1000mm. Similarly temperatures vary across the region with average annual minimums on the tablelands and nearby areas between 6 and 9 degrees Celsius. A series of frosts are received across the entire region each winter. Average annual maximums are between 18 and 21 degrees on the tablelands, 21 to 24 degrees across most of the region and 24 to 27 degrees in the west of the region. 1. Barraba 2. It is bounded in the west by the Maralinga Tjarutja (Maralinga Aboriginal Lands) and to the east by the dog fence alongthe west boundary of Mabel Creek pastorallease to the south and the western boundary of Mt Willoughby pastoral lease to the north. The northern boundary abuts the Anangu Pitjantjaraku Lands (Pitjanttjara Aboriginal Lands) and the southern boundary is the northern dog fence boundary of Commonwealth Hill pastoral lease. The total area of the Tallaringa study area is almost 12 000 km2.and it is divided into two almost equal sized blocks. The northern block is Vacant Crown Land while the southern block has, since 1959, been held on Annual Licence 9741 issued to Mabel Creek Ltd. -

Tree Planting Guide This guide is designed to help you with selecting and positioning trees to lessen the risk of roots blocking sewerage pipes. TREES AND THE HOME GARDEN What desolate places out cities and towns would be without trees in home gardens! Most of these trees are a real blessing. Unfortunately, though, a few of them are a nuisance, because they are unsuitable for their particular location. They can cause their owners a variety of serious problems, some of which are very expensive to fix. This booklet has been produced to help owners select tree and shrub species that will minimise the most common problem caused by trees in home gardens - chokes in sewerage pipes. The aim is certainly not to discourage people from planting trees - quite the opposite. Many people are very cautious and don’t plant trees anywhere near their sewerage pipes; this leaflet lists many species that they can confidently plant within a reasonable distance of their pipes - many as close as 2 metres. TREES AND SEWERAGE PIPES Fine hair roots will seek out and penetrate even very small cracks or joints in pipes. In addition the force exerted by larger roots can crack previously sound pipes, providing an avenue for root entry. Once roots have entered a pipe they grow in quite startling fashion, and can cause serious and costly failures in pipe systems. The biggest problem is with sewer pipes, but tree roots can cause problems with water reticulation and stormwater drainage pipes as well. Few people realise how aggressive the roots of some trees and shrubs can be in their relentless quest for water and nutrients. -

Greenleigh In that time we have accomplished a lot, we've grown from initial group of about 20 to over 150, the species/hybrids/selections in cultivation from 5 to probably nearly N.S.W. 300 and without our probing and questioning Bob's Chinnock's revision may well have never eventuated. Everything else has flowed from there, including the vari- ous books which use Bob's work as a starting point. GUIDE TO THE WESTERN AUSTRALIAN - SOUTH AUSTRALIAN GARDEN of the MELTON BOTANIC GARDEN First edition 2021 This first edition was developed by Barb Pye, Wendy Johnson, Jeanette Hodder, and David Pye, members of the Friends of the Melton Botanic Garden 1 Introduction Photographs are by Barb Pye, Anne Langmaid and David Pye Construction and planting of the Western Australian – South Australian (WASA) garden followed the Masterplan developed by Mike Smith and Associates, with its implementation planned by a committee comprising Barb Pye, Monique Perry (MCC), Anne Langmaid, John Bentley and David Pye. Construction commenced in 2014 with weed control, ripping, bed definitions and pathways for the whole area. In 2015, the northern beds were built and planted, commencing in May. The remaining beds were constructed and planted during 2016 and 2017. The garden was built and planted by volunteer members of the Friends of the Melton Botanic Garden (FMBG), who were assisted by Work for the Dole Teams. The garden continues to be managed and maintained by a volunteer group with members from the FMBG and the Centrelink Volunteers Program. David and Barb Pye have continued to manage the program to establish and maintain the Western Australian – South Australian garden (WASA). This program has included construction, plant selection and procurement, and maintenance. Growth of the garden has been fast, with significant flowering within 2 years.
