January 2020 (Signature) ABSTRACT This study explored the lack of integrating a scientific imagination and rationality in the hermeneutic and theological practices of neo-Pentecostal churches in the town of Livingstone, Zambia. Although the vantage point of the study was primarily practical theology, the researcher adopted both an interdisciplinary and a multidisciplinary approach. This assisted the researcher in understanding the different theoretical nuances that inform neo-Pentecostal theological practices as propagated by its proponents. An in-depth scientific analysis premised on the critical theory approach was conducted to find out whether or not neo-Pentecostal communicative practices contribute positively to the economic conditions of local church members in Livingstone. The theological framework for this study was based on the “pastoral cycle”, which ought to be at the very heart of any contemporary practical theology (Ballard & Pritchard 2006). The research methodology consisted of data collection, interpretation and analysis (comparing and contrasting primary sources in the light of the data collected). Research participants' personal narratives of their experience of neo-Pentecostal practices were heard in a semi-structured format. These aided in establishing ecclesiastical views on the causes of the lack of integrating a scientific imagination and rationality in neo-Pentecostal spiritual experience; and consequently informed the study on whether the current theological orientations of neo-Pentecostal congregations in Livingstone have a positive or negative impact on the economic conditions of members. Two forms of data collection were employed, namely qualitative interviews and observation instruments.     FENZA Documents The changing face of Christianity in Zambia: new churches of Bauleni Compound by Bernhard Udelhoven May 2010 Since the 1990s new churches in Zambia are multiplying fast. Many speak of “mushrooming churches”. The term seems to imply that new churches are coming in great numbers, as if overnight and out of nowhere, just like mushrooms in the rainy season. But also mush- rooms come from somewhere, and have been waiting for the right time to come out. This explosion of Pentecostal churches is not unique to Zambia, but to the whole of Sub- Saharan Africa. To differentiate the new churches from the classical, Western mission Pen- tecostal churches (for example the Assemblies of God, or the Pentecostal Holiness Church), different authors have baptised them different names, calling the newer ones “charismatic churches”, “Neo-Pentecostals”, “newer Pentecostal oriented churches“, “laissez-faire Pen- tecostals”, “new generation churches”, or “new-breed churches”, while others group them together with “African Initiated Churches” (some speak of “African Initiated Pentecostal Churches”). Such terms, however, are not used by the churches themselves. Most Zambian- born churches in Bauleni refer to themselves simply as “Pentecostal” and see themselves very much in continuity with the older traditions of the same name. Such an understanding of continuity, however, is not fully mutual. From the older Pente- costal traditions some questions are being asked, as a recent book of Rev. Madalitso Khulupirika Banda (2009) shows, warning of an emergence of a “happy go easy”- Pentecos- tal state of affairs in Zambia. The older Pentecostal churches saw themselves arising out of the demanding and non-complacent Holiness-movement, where the growth of churches was accompanied by visible signs of sacrifice on the side of the pastors.

    Original Research A scripturAl, theologicAl And historicAl AnAlysis of the concept of the ZAmbiAn christiAn nAtionhood Authors: Simon Muwowo1 ABSTRACT Johan Buitendag1 The article contributes to an understanding of the notion of Zambian Christian nationhood, which was first officially expressed in a presidential decree. The declaration of Zambia as a Affiliations: Christian nation was made by Fredrick Chiluba, the second President of the Republic of Zambia, 1Department of Dogmatics on 29 December 1991. In June 1996, an amendment to the Constitution of Zambia Act of 1991, and Christian Ethics, which included the Zambian Christian nation declaration, was effected, from which moment University of Pretoria, Zambia officially became regarded as a ‘Christian nation’. The current article proposes that a South Africa country cannot attain its Christian nationhood by presidential decree, but only by means of Correspondence to: cultural determination. However, an extensive evaluation of the culture concerned is needed in Johan Buitendag order for the task to be theologically feasible. To achieve a comprehensive analysis of the current situation, the article takes into consideration some of the historical paradigms and models of email: regions which were once Christian, but which have since failed to stand by such principles. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava [email protected] ABSTRACT The African Independent churches (AICs) in Zambia, as elsewhere in Africa, from their very beginning formed a protest movement against the cultural imperialism undertaken by the missionary representatives of the historic mission churches and also played an important role in the anti-colonial political struggles. In Zambia, the early AICs were closely related to witchcraft eradication movements such as the Mchape, or socially and politically oriented prophet-healing churches such as The Lumpa church of Alice Lenshina. Since the 1970s and in particular in the 1990s the Christianity in Zambia has been significantly marked by the proliferation of the African Independent Churches – both of Pentecostal and prophet-healing type. These churches that started mushrooming particularly in urban settings became part of the strengthening charismatic movement, particularly within Protestantism. A typical feature of AICs is focus on spiritual healing and religious syncretism - the local traditional customs and beliefs in dangerous ghosts, ancestral spirits, or witches are placed within the biblical religious framework where the Holy Spirit (Muzimu Oyela) is considered to be the only source of healing whereas other ‘inferior spirits’ are labelled as demons. The traditional methods of healing are creatively combined with Christian healing by means of prayers, spiritual blessings, laying on of hands on patients and demon exorcism – it is believed that only a body rid of bad spirits can receive the Holy Spirit, and thus be healed.

Soko PENTECOSTALISM & SCHISMS IN THE REFORMED CHURCH IN ZAMBIA 1996-2001: CONTEXTUAL AND IDENTITY CHANGES1 ABSTRACT This article analyzes the historical, contextual and identity changes that took place in the RCZ between 1996 and 2001 in order to find an answer to the question why it happened. The hypothesis is as follows: The leadership style of church leaders was influenced by the one-party state with its autocratic presidential powers that continued the missionary legacy of autocratic rule. The autocratic leadership style met head on with a new globalizing culture and with the Pentecostal tendencies in society. This created the conflict that caused the schisms. Pentecostal/charismatic tendencies challenged the long-inherited tradition with its autocratic church leadership style of mainline churches in general and the RCZ in particular. Subsequently, Pentecostal/charismatic movements caused intense conflict in the church between the pro-conservatives and pro-Pentecostals. In the RCZ, this led to the formation of the Christian Reformed Church (CRC) in 1999 and the Bible Gospel Church in Africa (BIGOCA) in 2001. 1 The paper is based on Chapters 2-3 of the doctoral dissertation of Lukas Soko (2010:14-80). Prof Hendriks was the study leader. Two additional articles were published: the first one from chapter 4 (81-120) of the dissertation dealing with the documentary evidence from church records and media coverage of the events (Hendriks & Soko 2011a), the second one from chapters 5 and 6, (121-160) dealing with the results of questionnaires and interviews held with all parties to the conflict (Hendriks & Soko 2011b).
