D. ABSTRACT Stemming from a recent surge in articles related to Korean masculinities, and based in a feminist and queer Marxist theoretical framework, this paper asks how gender, with a specific focus on what is referred to as soft masculinity, is constructed through K-pop performances, as well as what power structures are in play. By reading studies on pan-Asian masculinities and gender performativity - taking into account such factors as talnori and kkonminam, and investigating conceptual terms flower boy, aegyo, and girl crush - it forms a baseline for a qualitative research project. By conducting qualitative interviews with Swedish K-pop fans and performing semiotic analysis of K-pop music videos, the thesis finds that although K-pop masculinities are perceived as feminine to a foreign audience, they are still heavily rooted in a heteronormative framework. Furthermore, in investigating the production of gender performativity in K-pop, it finds that neoliberal commercialism holds an assertive grip over these productions and are thus able to dictate ‘conceptualizations’ of gender and project identities that are specifically tailored to attract certain audiences. Lastly, the study shows that these practices are sold under an umbrella of ‘loyalty’ in which fans are incentivized to consume in order to show support for their idols – in which the concept of desire plays a significant role. The translators’ role in mediating information between the international fans with the K-Pop artists is central in delivering the necessary information to its fans around the globe. This study has been motivated by the scarcity of research on the progress of translation in social media microblogging such as Twitter. It was aimed at analysing translation progress occurring in social media, namely the Twitter account, where communication discourse activities actively occurred. Big Hit Entertainment’s Twitter account (@BigHitEnt) was selected as the primary data sample because of the outstanding reputation of Bangtan Sonyeondan (BTS), a K-Pop idol group under the company’s label, in terms of social media engagement. This research employed the Social Media Translational Action (SoMTA) analytical framework, a new research methodology adapted from the Translational Action framework, for its data analysis. The content of the news feed in Twitter’s timeline is mostly written in the Korean language which might not be understood by the international fans who do not speak Korean.

After that, South Korean pop music artists and bands such as BTS or BLACKPINK kept dominating international charts and winning the admiration of millions of fans through their music videos. According to academic researchers, this was made possible because of a unique internationalization strategy called global-local-global which consists of the hybridity of cultural product by combining global production factors to a South Korean product with the goal of reaching an international audience by using a foreign distributor channel (YouTube). To understand the characteristics and evolution of this method, K-pop music videos with most YouTube views of each year from 2012 up to 2020 where analyzed. The aspects discussed and their respective evolution throughout the years were the nationality of the K-pop music videos producers, the identification of Korean and foreign elements in the visuals, the use of English in the lyrics, music style, the artists looks and also the use of YouTube digital tools. From the analysis of the music videos, the factors that did help with the popularity of K-pop where the progressive increase of English in the lyrics compared to Korean, the quality camerawork and great scenography together with the use of choreographies and YouTube hashtags and subtitles.

    BAB II GAMBARAN UMUM A. BTS Gambar 2.1 BTS (Diambil dari https://images.app.goo.gl/FdzNUEH1toq7n9AAA, tanggal 31/07/19) BTS merupakan salah satu boyband yang sedang hangat dibincangkan, mereka dibicangkan karena prestasi, penghargaan dan karya-karya yang mereka berikan kepada para fans atau ARMY. Tentunya tidak mudah untuk mengantongi beberapa prestasi tersebut. Awal mula, grup ini terbentuk dengan adanya kompetisi yang diselenggarakan oleh salah satu agensi kecil (pada saat itu) korea yang bernama Big Hit Entertaiment, dan pada akhirnya terbentuklah BTS kepanjangan dari Bangtan Sonyeondan dalam bahasa korea atau Beyond the Scene dalam bahasa inggris. Boyband ini memiliki tujuh anggota yang beranggotakan Kim Namjoon yang dikenal dengan RM sekaligus menjadi leader dari boyband ini, ada Kim Seok Jin yang dikenal dengan panggilan Jin, ada Min Yoon Gi yang dikenal dengan Suga, ada Jung Ho Seok yang dikenal dengan J-hope, ada Park Jimin yang dikenal dengan sebutan Jimin, ada juga Kim Tae Hyung yang dikenal dengan V, dan yang terakhir ada Jeon Jung Kook yang dikenal dengan Jungkook. Tentunya tidak mudah bagi mereka untuk mencapai sebuah kesuksesan, banyak rintangan yang harus mereka lewati seperti harus tinggal di dalam dom atau tempat tinggal yang kecil bahkan untuk tidur pun mereka menggunakan ranjang susun, menggunakan tempat latihan yang kecil, menyelenggarakan konser dengan sedikit penonton hingga penggemar yang masih sedikit, dilansir dari IDN Times 20 (Barus, https://www.idntimes.com/hype/entertainment/ramadani-barus/perjalanan- karir-bts-dari-rookie-hingga-menjadi-artis-dunia-yang-buat-army-bangga-1/full, Akses Pada 7 Maret). Tetapi dengan hal seperti itu tidak membuat mereka patah semangat, mereka terus berusaha untuk menjadi yang terbaik.

The members of the two bands greatly differ, their messages are on completely different ends of the spectrum, and their music falls under different genres. In all, Marilyn Manson has had thirteen different members since it was founded in 1989. The three original members included Marilyn Manson on vocals, Twiggy Ramirez on bass, and Gil Sharone on drums, under the title Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids. The band’s current members are Marilyn Manson on vocals, Gil Sharone on drums, and Tyler Bates on lead guitar. They go by Marilyn Manson, having dropped the last part of their name in 1993. All of the band members have been American, with the exception of one guitar player from Sweden and one guitar player from England. Marilyn Manson’s band can fall under many genres, including industrial metal, industrial rock, alternative, metal, hard rock, glam rock, and shock rock. The band can fall under seven genres because Manson is always experimenting with new techniques and instruments. Those aspects, coupled with dark and brooding outfits, have put many albums and videos into the industrial, alternative, metal, hard rock, and shock rock genres. The band’s love of sequins, heavy make-up, and hair dye has put some of their songs and videos under the glam rock genre. Because the band falls under the rock genre, the message of Marilyn Manson is often misinterpreted.

(United States) ABSTRACT BTS have several factors that have contributed to their exponentially rising popularity, but the most outstanding factor is the deeper message that they deliver through their music. Released in 2017, “Spring Day” is BTS’s longest-charting track. It goes beyond the typical love song and its music video not only includes but transcends past aesthetics. A close visual analysis of the “Spring Day” music video leads one to find a profound message that is up to interpretation. It contains visual elements, appropriately accompanying lyrics, and literary references to Christian Boltanski’s No Man’s Land and Ursula K. Le Guin’s “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas,” all of which lead to comfort in dealing with the loss of a loved one and the overarching concept of “you never walk alone.” KEYWORDS BTS, K-pop, “Spring Day,” video, interpretation, analysis, charts, “You Never Walk Alone” The music industry is an industry well known for its profitability and ever-growing variety of genres and artists. According to Watson (2019), the U.S. music industry alone generated approximately 20 billion dollars in revenue in 2018, which highlights the scale of music consumption and output in the U.S. However, several reports have also emphasized the oversaturation of the music industry. Additionally, genres such as jazz, pop, and country are some of the most popular and easily recognized styles, whereas genres such as K-pop or Korean pop still belong to the category of genres with niche listeners.
