TRAUMA AND MEMORY: AN ARTIST IN TURMOIL By Angelos Koutsourakis Konrad Wolf’s Artist Films Der nackte Mann auf dem Sportplatz (The Naked Man on the Sports Field, 1973) is one of Konrad Wolf’s four artist films. Like Goya (1971), Solo Sunny (1978), and Busch singt (Busch Sings, 1982)—his six-part documentary about the German singer and actor Ernst Busch, The Naked Man on the Sports Field focuses on the relationship between art and power. In Goya, Wolf looks at the life of the renowned Spanish painter—who initially benefited from the protection of the Spanish king and the Catholic church—in order to explore the role of the artist in society, as well as issues of artistic independence from political powers. In Solo Sunny, he describes a woman’s struggle for artistic expression and self-realization in a stultifying world that is tainted by patriarchal values; Sunny’s search is simultaneously a search for independence and a more fulfilling social role. The extreme violence characteristic of Europe in the first half of the 20th century has left us with many tricky problems to work through, including historiographic ones with political and ethical dimensions. Among these incidents of violence is the famine that took millions of lives in the Soviet Union in 1932–33, particularly in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. Abstract: The paper investigates how the issue of the Holocaust was presented in Soviet historiography in post-war period. Despite the fact that the Holocaust is an integral part of the history of WWII, and that about one third of all killed Jews were Soviet citizens who often met their death in numerous killing sites on the occupied territories of the Soviet Union, the Jewish tragedy was largely ignored by Soviet historians. Western scholars argued that, due to Stalinist anti-Semitism and its legacy, Soviet authorities deliberately suppressed any public discussion of the Holocaust. They referred to the notorious example of the Soviet treatment of the Black Book of Soviet Jewry prepared by Ilya Ehrenburg and Vasilij Grossman. The book, which contained important material on the fate of Soviet Jews during WWII was banned in 1948. The paper acknowledges that Soviet accounts in general downplayed or universalized the tragedy of the Jews and that Soviet scholars often preferred to refrain from mentioning the Jewish origin of many Nazi victims and Soviet resistance fighters. However, it demonstrates that the Holocaust was not completely erased from Soviet history books, but was adapted and rewritten within the confines of a conforming ideological narrative. -

Often these actions included the destruction of villages along with part or all of their inhabitants. In March of 1943 the village of Khatyn was burned to the ground along with all of its inhabitants by Nazi troops, many of whom were from Western Ukraine. Though more than 600 Belarusian villages met a similar fate, the site of the Khatyn massacre was chosen for the construction of an expansive memorial complex in 1969. Over the course of its existence, the Khatyn memorial has become one of the most important symbols of the tremendous loss of life and suffering the Second World War inflicted on Belarus. -

Brandeis Graduate Journal http://www.brandeis.edu/gradjournal 2004, Volume 2 All Rights Reserved Babi Yar, the Tragedy of Kiev’s Jews Victoria Khiterer Near Eastern and Judaic Studies Department, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Brandeis University The mass murder of European Jews by the Nazis gathered momentum in September 1941 at the ravine of Babi Yar in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, then in the Soviet Union, which had just been occupied by the German Army. Here is where the Nazis had their first experience with luring tens of thousands of Jews into a trap from which escape was practically impossible and death almost certain. In a few days the Nazis killed over a 100 thousand Jews, practically the entire Jewish population of Kiev at that time. A careful examination the events surrounding the Babi Yar massacre provides insight into the development of the tricks used by the Germans during the Holocaust to entice Jews to leave their homes and go to the designated gathering places from which they were ushered to their execution. In spite of the importance of Babi Yar as a testing ground for the Nazi’s vile chicanery and limitless cruelty, surprisingly little serious scholarly research been published about these tragic events at the end of the summer of 1941. My article uncovers details essential to understanding the actions of the Jewish victims, their German executioners as well as the local collaborators who assisted the Nazis. DISTORTION, NEGATIONISM, AND MINIMALIZATION OF THE HOLOCAUST IN POSTWAR ROMANIA Introduction This chapter reviews and analyzes the different forms of Holocaust distortion, denial, and minimalization in post-World War II Romania. It must be emphasized from the start that the analysis is based on the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s definition of the Holocaust, which Commission members accepted as authoritative soon after the Commission was established. This definition1 does not leave room for doubt about the state-organized participation of Romania in the genocide against the Jews, since during the Second World War, Romania was among those allies and a collaborators of Nazi Germany that had a systematic plan for the persecution and annihilation of the Jewish population living on territories under their unmitigated control. In Romania’s specific case, an additional “target-population” subjected to or destined for genocide was the Romany minority. This chapter will employ an adequate conceptualization, using both updated recent studies on the Holocaust in general and new interpretations concerning this genocide in particular. Insofar as the employed conceptualization is concerned, two terminological clarifications are in order. First, “distortion” refers to attempts to use historical research on the dimensions and significance of the Holocaust either to diminish its significance or to serve political and propagandistic purposes. Although its use is not strictly confined to the Communist era, the term “distortion” is generally employed in reference to that period, during which historical research was completely subjected to controls by the Communist Party’s political censorship. -

However, he refers to the Ozarichi camps in Belarus, near the villages Ozarichi, Dert and Semonovich. Murashkin was one of the approximately 40,000 people who ended up in these camps because they were seen as “useless eaters”.2 After the Battle of Stalingrad, Hitler ordered that nothing useful was to fall into the hands of the Soviets.
