  • Young Americans to Emotional Rescue: Selected Meetings
YOUNG AMERICANS TO EMOTIONAL RESCUE: SELECTING MEETINGS BETWEEN DISCO AND ROCK, 1975-1980 Daniel Kavka A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2010 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Katherine Meizel © 2010 Daniel Kavka All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Disco-rock, composed of disco-influenced recordings by rock artists, was a sub-genre of both disco and rock in the 1970s. Seminal recordings included: David Bowie’s Young Americans; The Rolling Stones’ “Hot Stuff,” “Miss You,” “Dance Pt.1,” and “Emotional Rescue”; KISS’s “Strutter ’78,” and “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”; Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy“; and Elton John’s Thom Bell Sessions and Victim of Love. Though disco-rock was a great commercial success during the disco era, it has received limited acknowledgement in post-disco scholarship. This thesis addresses the lack of existing scholarship pertaining to disco-rock. It examines both disco and disco-rock as products of cultural shifts during the 1970s. Disco was linked to the emergence of underground dance clubs in New York City, while disco-rock resulted from the increased mainstream visibility of disco culture during the mid seventies, as well as rock musicians’ exposure to disco music. My thesis argues for the study of a genre (disco-rock) that has been dismissed as inauthentic and commercial, a trend common to popular music discourse, and one that is linked to previous debates regarding the social value of pop music.

These new lugs hook onto bolts that at the shell’s nodal are attached to the shell, which allows the lug point. casings themselves to "float" eliminating any direct contact between the lug and the shell. As this design reduces the amount of hardware actually attached to the drum shell, the shell is allowed to vibrate freely. On an 11-inch shell the lug bolts, as well as the YESS mounting system, are all attached to the shell at its nodal point to greatly minimize influence on shell resonance to deliver maximum tone. Another benefit these lugs provide is when it comes time to change the head, it is no longer necessary to remove the tuning bolts from the lugs to remove the hoop. Just loosen the bolts enough to slide the lugs off of the bolts and the hoop comes right off. No more lost washers, etc. and head changes can be done quicker and easier than before. * Nodal point mounting is patented by the Nobel & Cooley Drum Company. Nylon Ring * Beside the Absolute Nouveau Lugs, the Absolute lugs that were offered on O Ring earlier models are also available.

When he was 8 years old, he heard Love Me Do at a party and his life changed forever! He fell in love with The Beatles and knew that music would be his life. For years, he bought and assembled a collection of Beatles instruments with the idea of one day forming a tribute band. In 2016 he met Bruno (drummer) through a friend and invited him to join the band. Then Bruno invited three other friends who played with him in another band (Martin, Bruno and Agustin). When the band finally formed in 2016, they began to perform in different stages and bars in Montevideo. At the end of 2016 they competed in the Beatle Week battle of the bands at The Cavern in Buenos Aires, reaching the final, and in 2017 they decided to take the leap and present a show in one of the great theaters of Montevideo in which they recreated chronologically the music of The Beatles. G010003380138H/01 RATTLE THAT LOCK (Music: David Gilmour / Michaël Boumendil / Lyrics: Polly Samson) Whatever it takes to break And all the other travellers Got to do it Become phantoms to our eyes From the Burning Lake The furies and the revellers Or the Eastern Gate The fallen angels in disguise You’ll get through it No Discord, Chance or Rumour Rattle that lock and lose those chains Is going to interrupt this bliss Rattle that lock and lose those chains No Discord, Chance or Rumour Rattle that lock and lose those chains To interrupt this... Rattle that lock So let’s get to it Let’s go do it It’s calling like a fl ame Have it all our way Through the darkness and the night Go back to where we blew it A world suspended on a golden chain And lose our heads along the way No Discord, Chance or Rumour So long Sin, au revoir Chaos Is going to interrupt this bliss If there’s a Heaven it can wait No Discord, Chance or Rumour So long Sin and au revoir Chaos To interrupt this... If there’s a Heaven… Rattle that lock and lose those chains Rattle that lock and lose those chains Rattle that lock and lose those chains A BOAT FACES LIES OF STONE WAITING (Music and lyrics: David Gilmour) (Music: David Gilmour / Lyrics: Polly Samson) Faces of stone that watched from the dark Something I never knew As the wind swirled around and you took my arm in the park In silence I’d hear you Images framed, hung high in the trees And a boat lies waiting And you talked of your youth but the years had turned dry as the leaves Still your clouds all fl aming That old time
