Kahlil Gibran a Tear and a Smile (1950)
“perplexity is the beginning of knowledge…” Kahlil Gibran A Tear and A Smile (1950) STYLIN’! SAMBA JOY VERSUS STRUCTURAL PRECISION THE SOCCER CASE STUDIES OF BRAZIL AND GERMANY Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Susan P. Milby, M.A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2006 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Melvin Adelman, Adviser Professor William J. Morgan Professor Sarah Fields _______________________________ Adviser College of Education Graduate Program Copyright by Susan P. Milby 2006 ABSTRACT Soccer playing style has not been addressed in detail in the academic literature, as playing style has often been dismissed as the aesthetic element of the game. Brief mention of playing style is considered when discussing national identity and gender. Through a literature research methodology and detailed study of game situations, this dissertation addresses a definitive definition of playing style and details the cultural elements that influence it. A case study analysis of German and Brazilian soccer exemplifies how cultural elements shape, influence, and intersect with playing style. Eight signature elements of playing style are determined: tactics, technique, body image, concept of soccer, values, tradition, ecological and a miscellaneous category. Each of these elements is then extrapolated for Germany and Brazil, setting up a comparative binary. Literature analysis further reinforces this contrasting comparison. Both history of the country and the sport history of the country are necessary determinants when considering style, as style must be historically situated when being discussed in order to avoid stereotypification. Historic time lines of significant German and Brazilian style changes are determined and interpretated. -

Gary Lineker to Lead a Post-Show Panel for the Red Lion 20-11-17
Gary Lineker to lead a post-show panel for Patrick Marber’s The Red Lion Trafalgar Studios, 14 Whitehall, London SW1A 2DY Wednesday 1st November – Saturday 2nd December 2017 Press Night: Monday 6th November 2017, 7pm Post-show panel: Monday 20th November Retired English footballer and sports broadcaster Gary Lineker OBE will lead an exciting post-show panel on Monday 20th November, discussing the football themes of Patrick Marber’s The Red Lion. Set in the dressing room of a semi-professional football club in the North East, this powerful, funny and touching locker room drama reaches beyond the beautiful game, exploring contrasting ideas about loyalty, ambition and what it takes to win, from the perspectives of three different generations. Lineker comments, I look forward to seeing this new version of The Red Lion at Trafalgar Studios. It’s a premier league play about non-league football and you can join the cast and me for a post-show discussion on the play and the importance of these leagues in the wider game. The Red Lion is hoping to attract new young theatre fans by working with some of London’s major football clubs and inviting players from their Academy and Youth Education programmes to come and see the play. Amy O’Brien, Head of Development at Fulham Football Club Foundation, comments, We’re delighted that our Football & Education participants can take advantage of this opportunity. In addition to football [1] training, the character and social development of our student-athletes is an integral part of our programme, and team building activities such as this add tremendous value. -

The Work of Professional Football
The work of professional football Most professional footballers don’t have a Ferrari, a mansion, a celebrity girl- friend or a lucrative book deal. Few of them will ever play at Wembley. Their careers are short, insecure, and played out under constant scrutiny. The Work of Professional Football offers a sociological study of the working lives of ‘ordinary’ professional footballers. Based on extensive research, including in- depth interviews with players who have achieved varying degrees of professional success, it provides unprecedented insight into this ‘closed’ world, and a unique sociological exploration of a contemporary working culture. It examines: ● The labour of professional sport ● The drama and performance of a career in the public eye ● How players deal with the fragile and uncertain nature of their careers ● The role of footballers’ working and family relationships ● Changing attitudes and ideals over the course of a career The book focuses on career turning points, such as injury and transfer, and demonstrates how players’ identities are built around basic needs for security and self-esteem. The Work of Professional Football will be of great interest to students and researchers working in the sociology of sport and the sociology of work, foot- ball studies, coaching studies, business and management. AUC Kinanthrophologica 2 2015 4438.Indd
ACTA UNIVERSITATIS CAROLINAE KINANTHROPOLOGICA Vol. 51, 2 – 2015 Pag. 5–19 CARDIFF METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY, CARDIFF SCHOOL OF SPORT FOOTBALL, ALCOHOL AND GAMBLING: AN UNHOLY TRINITY? CARWYN JONES ABSTRACT In this paper I argue that football plays a questionable role in promoting two potentially problematic activities, namely drinking alcohol and gambling. Gambling and alcohol companies sponsor clubs and competitions and also pay to advertise their products at the stadia and during television coverage. Consequently millions of fans, including children, are exposed to the marketing of these restricted products. The latter are exposed despite regulations that prohibit such advertising and promotion in other contexts. The promotion of these activities to children and to adults increases levels of consumption which in turn increases the number of problem drinkers and gamblers in society. High-profile football- ers play a further role in normalising drinking and gambling. They are role models whose actions influence others. Their excessive drinking and gambling activities provide poor examples for football fans, young and old. Keywords: alcohol; gambling; football; role models; promotion DOI: 10.14712/23366052.2015.28 INTRODUCTION When watching football, particularly elite level professional football in the UK, it is clear that two activities are closely aligned, namely drinking alcohol and gambling. The gam- bling and alcohol industries know that one sure way to access their customers or poten- tial customers is through football, so they invest millions of pounds sponsoring clubs, tournaments, and leagues, and advertise their products during today’s extensive televised football coverage. Drinking beer and betting on the result of matches (or on the likelihood of some event during the game) either at home, in the pub or at the match is an obliga- tory complement the spectacle of the game for many fans. -

FACT Sheet FIFA awards The FIFA World Player Gala has been in existence since 1991. In 2010, it was merged with France Football’s Ballon d’Or award to form the new “FIFA Ballon d’Or”. The newly named FIFA Ballon d’Or is a combination of the FIFA World Player of the Year award and France Football’s Ballon d’Or. The 2010 winner was chosen by national team coaches and captains as well as media representatives from all over the world. The FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year award was also decided by the votes of national team coaches and captains as well as media representatives from all over the world. For the first time, Coach of the Year awards were presented at the ceremony to honour the top coaching talent in both the men’s and women’s games.
