A woman believed to be in her 50s died at the scene of a crash at Brock and Taunton roads in Pickering, Durham police spokesman Dave Selby said. The crash was one of several, including a big pile-up near Orono, caused by the sudden arrival of freezing rain, he said. “We had about 16 motor vehicle collision scenes in about a half hour, between 7:38 a.m. and 8:17,” Mr. Selby said. Police also temporarily closed Taunton Road west of Hwy. 115 after an estimated 15 vehicles slid off an icy hill, some of them slamming into one another, Mr. Selby said.
