Biblioteca La Bòbila. L'hospitalet / Esplugues bobila.blogspot.com el fanzine del “Club de Lectura de Novelꞏla Negra” de la Biblioteca la Bòbila # 132 Pseudònim relatiu de Frank Morrison Spillane. (Brooklyn, Nova York, 9 de març de 1918 — Murrells Inlet, Carolina del Sud; 17 de juliol de 2006). Cap a la meitat dels anys trenta va començar a escriure per als pulps, i després es va dedicar als «còmic-books», o revistes de narració dibuixada, preferentment en relació amb personatges de superherois. L’any 1947 va crear el seu cèlebre investigador privat Mike Hammer. Va interrompre la saga d’aquest detectiu i gairebé totes les seves activitats literàries el 1953, en ingressar a la secta dels Testimonis de Jehovà. El 1961 va tornar a l’escena novelꞏlística amb una obra sense Hammer, The Deep (Qui mana), que ja havia estat precedida el 1951 per The Long Wait en la manca de protagonisme fix. Aquesta línia va continuar mitjançant The Delta Factor (1967), Tough Guys (1970), The Erection Set (1972), The Last Cop Out (1973). Mentrestant havia creat un personatge nou, seguint en molts aspectes la imatge del violent i ultradretà Mike Hammer, que treballava per a una superorganització d’espionatge finançada per un bilionari de mentalitat feixista: Tiger Mann. Va protagonitzar Day of the Guns (1964), Bloody Sunrise (1965), The Death Dealers (1965) i The By-Pass Control (1966). Al marge de la sèrie Mike Hammer, hi va haver adaptacions cinematogràfiques de The Long Wait (1954, Tras sus propias huellas), per Victor Saville, i de The Delta Factor (1970, Delta Factor, agente CIA), per Tay Garnett. El mateix Spillane va aparèixer com a actor en un parell de pelꞏlícules, en una de les quals interpretava Mike Hammer.     MICKEY SPILLANE, 1918-2006 On March 9, 1918, in Brooklyn, New York, Frank Morrison Spillane was born on March 9, 1918, in Brooklyn, to parents Anne and John Spillane. Although he would be known as Morrison by his teachers, it was his father's nickname for him which would endure: Mickey. As a youth, he excelled at football and swimming. It was during his high school years that he began his writing career, with his first piece published shortly after graduation. Early in his career, he would often have his work published under pseudonyms, Frank Morrison being one of them. After high school, he briefly attended Kansas State Teachers College, spending most of his time there playing football. After college, he returned to New York. He worked at Gimbel's then joined the staff of writers at Marvel Comic Books, penning detective and supehero stories. When WW II broke out, Mickey enlisted in the Air Force but remained stateside and out of the action. Stationed in Mississippi, he met Mary Ann Pearce, who, in 1945, became his first wife. They later had four children, Kathy, Ward, Michael and Caroline. After the war, he returned to New York. He bought a plot of land and decided to build a new home on it. To do so required a thousand dollars, a thousand dollars more than he had. So, in order to raise the money, he decided to write a book. He based it on a comic book character called Mike Danger he had created early in his career. That book was I, The Jury.

Brakes grab, tires scream across the asphalt, and a Jaguar spins off the highway in a swirl of dust.     chapter 6 From Confession to Exposure Transitions in 1940s Anticommunist Literature Alex Goodall On August 23, 1939, the Soviet regime signed the pact with Nazi Germany that ripped apart the Popular Front alliance of communists and left-wing progressives that had dominated radical politics in the second half of the 1930s. The betrayal was especially painful for the radical American artists who had believed themselves to be working on the “cultural front,” and their tools of trade ensured that they were well placed to give cogent expres- sion to their feelings.1 The result was a literature of alienation in the early 1940s that formed a precursor to the larger shift toward anticommunism in American culture in the Cold War. Since ex-communists and disappointed fellow travelers moved across the political spectrum over the coming decade, their influence was felt in left- wing, liberal, and conservative circles alike. Politicians and public figures of all stripes in the Cold War deployed arguments that had been initially artic- ulated by these disappointed radicals. Nevertheless, the initial literary prod- ucts of what Alfred Kazin called the “Great Disillusionment” were written at a time when anticommunism had not yet become an all-consuming cul- tural force in American life.2 The United States and Soviet Union fought as allies between 1941 and 1945, and while there was little love for communism in the American mainstream, Nazism and Japanese militarism were seen as greater dangers to world peace. Bezzerides Yiorgos Kalogeras Albert Isaac Bezzerides (1908-2007) belongs to a generation of writers who came into relative prominence in the 1930s at a time when “the open door” immigration policy of the U.S.A. had become a thing of the past (1924).1 The consequences of the Reed-Johnson Act were almost immediate and felt by the “new immigrants” and the “natives.”2 The realization that the majority of the immigrants were there to stay and become part of the U.S.A. was solidified. In the meantime, the 1930s and the Great Depression had created the need for another kind of literature still modern and experimental yet socially more aware. William Faulkner refocused the attention of his audience on the regional, giving voice and valorizing the under trodden who established their presence in the New South after the Civil War. Their domain was Yoknapatawpha County, Faulkner’s mythological terrain; and their representation emerged as part of the modernistic project of the 20th century. F. Scott Fitzgerald, on the other hand, sensed the tremors that the immigrants and their children created in a U.S.A. society which in the 1920s was divided between new and old money. Chapter five in The Great Gatsby (1925) provided the names of those who claimed not only the space of Gatsby’s mansion, frequented his parties, and were eager to draw their host’s attention, but also those whose parents had responded to “the pandering voice” of America. Fitzgerald’s Nick Carraway the novel’s narrator creates an aura of ambiguity around Jay Gatsby.

    3-D Film Noir of the 1950s Ray Zone he screening of pristine black-and-white prints at the World 3-D Film Expo in September 2003 and 2006 in Hollywood provided an opportunity to re-evaluate three films noir of the 1950s and to consider their effectiveness as stereoscopic narratives within the genre. The shimmering black-and-white prints were given optimum presentation; it’s possible these 3-D films didn’t look this good even on their first runs, way back when. The short history of 3-D noir is one that has been buried in the wreckage of a short-lived technology that came and went with shocking speed in the early 1950s. Through the crimes, an audience can understand not only the fears of a particular society but also the level of calumny that society assigns to a crime. As each generation has needed a particular set of qualities in its defense, so the detective has provided them. Through the detective's response to particular crimes, the reader can learn the delineation of forgivable and unforgivable acts. These detectives illustrate positive masculinity, proving that fiction has more uses than mere entertainment. In this paper, I trace four detectives, each from a different era. Sherlock Holmes lives to solve problems. His primary function is to solve a riddle. Lord Peter Wimsey takes on the moral question of why anyone should detect at all. His stories involve the difficulty of justifying putting oneself in the morally superior position of judge.
