A co-founder of Theatreworks, she has served as writer- in-residence at the Mill Theatre, Playbox Theatre, La Trobe University, Monash University and VCA. Her theatre credits include Please Return to Sender (1980) and Mary (1981), each premiering at Theatreworks; and Leave It Till Monday (1984), which was first produced by the Mill Theatre. Room to Move (1985) won the Australian Writers’ Guild AWGIE Award for Best Original Stage Play. Her next play, Hotel Sorrento (1990), a Playbox / Theatreworks co- production, won an AWGIE Award as well as a NSW Premier’s Literary Award and Green Room Award for Best Play of 1990. Falling From Grace (1994), winner of a NSW Premier’s Literary Award and the Age Performing Arts Award, also premiered at Playbox, as did Competitive Tenderness (1996). Life After George (2000) opened at MTC and went on to win the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award, the Green Room Award for Best New Australian Play, and Best New Australian Work at the 2001 Helpmann Awards. It became the first play to be nominated for the Miles Franklin Award. Her plays have been performed extensively around Australia and a number have been produced overseas.     EN 383: AUSTRALIAN LITERATURE COURSE SPECIFICATIONS Title EN 383: AUSTRALIAN LITERATURE Course Coordinator Dr. Sharon Clarke COURSE SYNOPSIS This course is designed to introduce students to the literature of Australia through an eclectic collection of texts covering diverse forms and genres of writing. A critical exploration of these texts will be undertaken in terms of Australia's cultural formation/ evolution. Aspects and contexts of history, geographical location, urban and rural landscape, climate, and people will inform this exploration. Where possible, relevant guest speakers will be invited to address classes. Critical material will be introduced to discussions in which all students are expected to participate. Where appropriate, videotaped footage will also be used and discussed as another form of critical appraisal of a text. FORMAT For this course, formal lectures, group tutorials and seminar presentations have been organised. Attendance at all sessions is compulsory. While lectures will offer certain readings of texts - as well as providing the historical, geographical, social and environmental background to these texts - such readings should be considered by no means exclusive. In seminar presentations, students will be encouraged to explore other meanings and to develop their own textually-based and research-based analytical and evaluative skills. All students will be expected to contribute to all class discussions and therefore need to prepare for each class by completing the reading designated in the following schedule, and by allowing all possible time for the consideration of issues raised in preparatory material provided in advance.     Simon Phillips – Citation Simon Phillips is one of Australia’s finest theatre directors, whose supreme artistry and showman’s flair have combined in dozens of major theatre, musical theatre and opera productions in Australia and overseas during a thirty‐year career. For the past eleven seasons, Phillips has been the Artistic Director of Melbourne Theatre Company, a Department of the University of Melbourne that, under his stewardship, more than consolidated its reputation as one the most artistically vibrant, popular and successful arts organisations in Australia. Born in Penang in 1958, Simon Phillips was raised and educated in New Zealand. He attended the University of Auckland from 1976 to 1978, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree and the John Tinline Prize in English. After graduating, Simon Phillips studied stage directing more formally at the New Zealand Drama School, and when one of his tutors, Jonathan Hardy, moved on to run the Mercury Theatre in Auckland, he took Phillips on as his Associate Director. In 1984, Simon Phillips came to Australia, becoming a lecturer and director at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). In 1987, he became an Associate Director at MTC under Artistic Director Roger Hodgman. This first period at MTC was characterised by a range of brilliantly realised and critically acclaimed productions of classics and new work, including Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, Stephen Sewell’s Dreams of an Empty City, Caryl Churchill’s Serious Money, and Joe Orton’s What the Butler Saw. In all his work in this first period at MTC and subsequently as the Artistic Director of the State Theatre Company of South Australia from 1990 to 1993, Phillips displayed the full range of directorial gifts.

    CITATION Honorary Doctor of Letters James McCaughey James McCaughey was a recipient of the Shell (Australia) Scholarship in Arts. He was a graduate of Classical Philology at the Arts Faculty at the University of Melbourne, followed by Divinity Studies at Pembroke College, Cambridge (1965) and an M.Litt. at Dublin University (1967). McCaughey began his professional life teaching classical studies at Princeton and Bryn Mawr College in the United States. Appointed as Seymour Reader in Classics at Ormond College and the University of Melbourne in 1969, he pursued his interest in Epic and Greek Tragedy, creating the Greek Theatre Project dedicated to the production of Greek plays in the language of contemporary theatre. He directed Euripides’s Bacchae and Hippolytus and this project culminated with his production of Aeschylus' Oresteian Trilogy at the Pram Factory, Carlton in 1974. He developed a unique approach to choral performance and worked with the Fulbright Fellow, Rush Rehm, currently Professor of Drama and Classics at Stanford University who wrote the translation for the trilogy. In 1975, when the Faculty of Arts launched a suite of interdisciplinary subjects, McCaughey became the subject leader of the new Interdisciplinary subject in Drama; thus Melbourne became the first Victorian university to teach theatre studies. This year-long course uniquely developed a comparative approach to theatre studies and drew upon academics in Russian (Judith Armstrong) and German (Hector Maclean) to pioneer teaching of important developments in the theatrical canon. In addition, he introduced new approaches to theatre theory and practice, and encouraged the exploration of twentieth century texts, notably Brecht and the Theatre of the Absurd, as well as the creation of new Australian texts and performances.
