Air Signs PRODUCED BY JAY DEE (AKA J DILLA) The heads have made a demand. The standard vocal version of “Yancey Boys” is not enough to satisfy their thirst for Jay Dee beats. They said an instrumental version has to be released, and luckily Delicious Vinyl is willing to supply the material to fill this request. John “Illa J” Yancey, younger brother of late, great genius producer James Yancey (aka Jay Dee, J Dilla), recently released his debut album. Rhyming and singing over a treasure trove of previously untouched Jay Dee gems, the project represents both a full-circle collaboration and a whole new beginning in the story of the musically exceptional Yancey brothers. Michael Ross says, “...Anyone who loves Jay Dee’s music is going to flip out when they hear what Illa J’s been laying down. For over a decade these beats have been waiting in the vault for this moment. It’s like Jay Dee made these tracks with an extrasensory purpose, so that Illa J could make this album. There is no question that this is exactly what they were meant for. These beats belong to Illa J, they’re his birthright, and I really believe Jay Dee would be proud of what his brother is doing.” THE ONE SHEET FOR THIS ITEM IS A RESOLICITATION Format: CD & 2xLP — Cat. In this case, the man is John Robinson. Formerly known as Lil Sci from Scienz of Life, a group who had put out records on Bobbito Garcia’s Fondle ‘Em imprint and Sub Verse Music in the late 90s and early 2000s. Robinson later went on to release his debut solo album I Am Not For Sale, followed by a collaborative effort called Lil Sci and Carlos Niño present What’s The Science? After working with John on previous projects such as King Ghedoraah and multiple Scienz of Life albums, MF Doom suggested they embark on a full-length concept album, to be executive produced by The Villain himself where Lil Sci would take on his government name, John Robinson. The result is Who Is This Man?, an incredible group of songs produced entirely by Doom, with DJ Rhetmatic of the World Famous Beat Junkies laying down all the cuts. The album was completed four years ago but due to complications it remained in limbo and unreleased. Fast forward to 2009 and the project has been picked up by the good folks at High Water Music and will finally get the official release it deserves. Who Is This Man? showcases Doom’s diversity as a producer and contains arguably the best display of his talents from behind the boards since his debut album Doomsday. From the dark tone of “Black Gold” to the melodic love tale of “There She Goes”, this album is filled with Doom’s signature sound bites and production style. He also lends a verse to the album’s closing track “Sorcerers”. John Robinson shows incredible lyrical range throughout the album, like on “Indy 102” where he breaks down the indie Hip Hop grind or on the aforementioned “Black Gold” with its social commentary on the war for oil. Join John Robinson and MF Doom on this journey and see if you can figure out who this man really is... PRE-ORDERS ON THIS ITEM ARE DUE BY JAN 6th Format: CD — Cat. Hung Up On My Baby Traffic Entertainment presents The Memphis Sounds Ike’s Moods, an all-instrumental collection of Isaac Hayes’ most well-known songs. In a similar vein as the Ultimate Breaks & Beats Instrumentals album, Ike’s Moods takes the best from Isaac Hayes’ catalog and transforms them into instrumental gems. Just as Hayes defined funk and soul in the 60s and 70s, the members of The Memphis Sound have carved out their own unique contemporary sound that not only attracts a younger generation to the genres, but also pleases fans of the sounds since their inception. Consisting of members from El Michels Affair, the Dap Kings, and Anti Balas, these instrumentalists have been a part of a movement of neo-wave funk and soul musicians, redefining the sound through projects with Mark Ronson (his most recent album Version) and Amy Winehouse (Back to Black, as well as touring with the singer); reworking classic instrumentals for the Wu-Tang Clan on a series of 7” records and performing live alongside the clansmen; and other various live and studio recorded projects. Ike’s Moods contains such classics as “Shaft,” “Walk On By,” and “Look Of Love,” and aptly pays homage to the many moods and musical stylings of Hayes. An innovator of his time, Isaac Hayes is most known for his work on the music for Shaft whose theme song was made famous by its wah-wah guitar and multi-layered symphonic arrangement. Passing away in August 2008, Hayes left behind a career that spanned an extensive discography, filmography, and a handful of awards including three Grammy’s, an NAACP Image Award, and an Academy Award. Celebrate the career of this American music icon who defined the funk and soul genres with Ike’s Moods. PRE-ORDERS ON THIS ITEM ARE DUE BY MAR 31st Format: CD — Cat. This is not an easy task – for every one hundred stage or lab band records you find (when you’re lucky to find them, as they were micro-pressed and never properly distributed outside of the region where the school in question sat), perhaps you’ll find five interesting ones. Out of every hundred interesting tracks you hear, maybe five will contain a little magic. Out of every hundred magical tracks, maybe twenty deserve reissue. You can tell we’ve been working on this compilation for years, right? We follow in the footsteps of Cali-Tex’s School House Funk volumes and Now-Again Records proper exhumation of the legendary Houston, Texas-based Kashmere Stage Band’s nigh-perfect repertoire.
