Introduction and Methods The field of neuroesthetics is a recent marriage of the realms of neuroscience and art. The objective of neuroesthetics is to comprehend the perception and subjective experience of art in terms of their neural substrates. In this study, we examined the effect of a number of original pieces of art on the brain of the artist herself and on that of a novice as she experienced the artwork for the first time. This allowed us to compare neural responses not only amongst different visual conditions but also between an expert (i.e. the artist) and a novice. Lia Cook lent her artwork to be used in this study. The pieces, which she believes to have an innate emotional quality, are cotton and rayon textiles. All of the pieces are portraits with a somewhat abstract, pixelated appearance imparted by the medium. In order to better understand the neural effects of the woven facial images, we used several types of control images. These included (i) scrambled woven pieces, or textiles that were controlled for color, contrast, and size but contained no distinct facial forms; and (ii) photographs, which were all photographs of human faces but were printed on heavy paper and lacked the texture and unique visual appearance of the textiles. All of the pieces are 12.5 in. x 18 in. The expert and novice were each scanned with functional MRI while they viewed and touched the tapestries and photographs. The subjects completed 100 trials divided across two functional scans. Each trial lasted a total of 12 s, with jittered intervals of 4 s to 6 s between trials. -

Over the past decades, however, the idea of cognitive consistency as a core motive has been replaced by an increasingly narrow focus on dissonance-related changes in attitudes and alternative accounts that at- tribute such changes to mechanisms of ego-defense. The current article aims at reviving the idea of cognitive consistency as a core motive, arguing that inconsistency serves as an epistemic cue for errors in one’s system of beliefs. Because inconsistency can often be resolved in multiple ways, motivated reasoning can bias processes of inconsistency resolution toward desired conclusions, although motivated distortions are constrained by the need for cognitive consistency. The ubiquity of consistency processes is il- lustrated through its role in various instances of threat-compensation (e.g., victim derogation, self-verification, system justification) and the insights that can be gained from reconceptualizing various social psychological phenomena in terms of cognitive consistency (e.g., prejudice-related belief systems, dispositional inference, stability of first impressions). Festinger’s (1957) theory of cognitive dissonance is arguably one of the most in- fluential theories in the history of social psychology. The theory postulates that inconsistent cognitions elicit an aversive state of arousal (i.e., dissonance), which in turn produces a desire to reduce the underlying inconsistency and to maintain a state of consonance.1 Although Festinger was convinced that the psychological need for cognitive consistency is as basic as hunger and thirst, several revisions 1. -

It has been shown that alexithymia is related to an impaired perception of external emotional stimuli, but previous research focused on emotion perception from faces and voices. Since sensory modalities represent rather distinct input channels it is important to know whether alexithymia also affects emotion perception in other modalities and expressive domains. The objective of our review was to summarize and systematically assess the literature on the impact of alexithymia on the perception of emotional (or hedonic) stimuli in music, odor, taste, and touch. Eleven relevant studies were identified. Rapid P300 Brain-Computer Interface Communication with a Head-Mounted Display

However, they require the presentation of visual stimuli in the field of view of the user. A head-mounted display could allow convenient presentation of visual stimuli in situations, where mounting a conventional monitor might be difficult or not feasible (e.g., at a patient’s bedside). To explore if similar accuracies can be achieved with a virtual reality (VR) headset compared to a conventional flat screen monitor, we conducted an experiment with 18 healthy participants.
