Post Title: Senior Clinical Fellow in Otolaryngology (ENT)

Base: Manchester Royal Infirmary/ Trafford General Hospital/

Term of Post: 12 months

Salary Scale: The Terms and Conditions of Service for Specialty Doctors – England (2008) will apply. The pay scale commences at £28,243 - £49,036 per annum, rising by increments subject to meeting the criteria for pay progression. The starting salary will be calculated in accordance with Schedule 14, Terms and Condition of Service for Specialty Doctors.

1. THE TRUST

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust is a major teaching Trust with ten hospitals on a number of sites. The hospitals involved are Manchester Royal Infirmary, Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, Saint Mary’s Hospital, Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and University Dental Hospital of Manchester (collectively known as the Oxford Road campus), , Withington Community Hospital, Trafford General Hospital, Altrincham Hospital and North Manchester General Hospital.

2. THE DEPARTMENT

 Location – ENT & Audiology Department, Trafford General Hospital & Manchester Head & Neck Centre, Manchester Royal Infirmary  Services provided - General and Specialist ENT including Head & Neck cancer surgery, rhinology, otology, hearing implant surgery and reconstructive surgery  Management of department – Manchester Head & Neck Centre, Division of Surgery  Medical Staffing at Trafford – 5 consultants  Medical Staffing at MRI – 13 consultants and 3 Specialty Trainees  There are 4 Senior Clinical Fellows that rotate and cover both sides.

3. THE POST

3.1 Main Job Purpose:

The Directorate of ENT and Head & Neck surgery is looking for enthusiastic and well-motivated Senior Clinical Fellows (ST3+ level) to join our team. This post provides a great opportunity to gain significant experience in one of the largest Tertiary referral Centre of Excellence in the UK. The successful candidates will be working alongside 13 consultants and 7 middle grade doctors including trainee speciality registrars. The post holder will have opportunity to rotate through the major subspecialties in ENT (H&N, Rhinology and otology) and will gain experience in assisting major H&N surgeries, Complex rhinology and reconstructive surgeries, Otology including implant surgery.

3.2 Key Duties and Responsibilities

 Outpatient work: 5.5 clinics  Theatre work: 2.5 sessions (those sessions are subspecialty lists a with a senior consultant with no other trainee present in the list)  SPA: 2 sessions  Ward rounds - daily  Administrative work - reviewing results and reviewing letters and organizing rota  Teaching / audit / research - teaching medical students and FY2 and GP trainees and participating in departmental audits

3.3 On-call

The post holder will take part in non-resident middle grade out of hours on call rota and ‘registrar of the week’ day oncall rota to manage inpatients and emergencies at Manchester Royal Infirmary.

Banding supplements may be altered in the light of changes in working patterns in order to make posts compliant with the New Deal. Any changes in pay bands will be undertaken in accordance with the Terms and Conditions of service sub-paragraph 22m. Confirmation of the banding allocated to successful candidates will be confirmed upon commencement.

3.4 Experience offered

Experience is gained in a wide range of practical procedures focussing within the subspecialty. The post will include supporting the outpatient and theatre activity of established senior specialist consultants on both MRI and Trafford sites.

Whilst this post is not recognised for training, depending on the expectations of the appointee, we will endeavour to meet your training needs. Individual doctors should discuss their training needs with the supervising Consultant. The candidates will be supported and encouraged to apply for the master (M Med) In ENT run by the department jointly with Manchester metropolitan university.

There is ample opportunity to take part in Quality and service Improvement projects, research, publication and presentation.

CONDITIONS OF SERVICE

1. Covering Unforeseen Absence/ Occasional Emergencies

Medical Staff may be asked to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation where practicable with colleagues both senior and junior.

2. Accountability

Managerially the candidate is accountable to Mr. Baskaran Ranganathan lead ENT clinician and professionally accountable to the Trust Medical Director, Miss Toli Onon

3. Study Leave

As this is a non-training post, study leave will be granted at the discretion of your supervising Consultant in conjunction with your Directorate Manager.

4. Annual leave

27 days per year.

There are also have 8 public holidays per annum In addition to the annual leave entitlement.

5. Maintaining Medical Excellence

The Trust is committed to providing safe and effective care for patients. To ensure this there is an agreed procedure for medical staff that enables them to report, quickly and confidentially, concerns about the conduct, performance or health of medical colleagues (Chief Medical Officer, December 1996). All medical staff, practising in the Trust, should ensure that they are familiar with the procedure and apply it.

6. Risk Management

The Trust has a Risk Management Strategy. All Medical Staff are required to adhere to the principles and practices contained therein.

7. Infection Control

It is a requirement for all staff to comply with all infection control policies and procedures as set out in the Trust Infection Control manual
