De song zelf was toen ook al 20 jaar oud! Geschreven door Irving Berlin als sluitstuk van zijn soldatenrevue Yip Yip Yaphank, maar hij zag er toen van af wegens het overaanbod van patriotische songs in die tijd. Met WO II op til haalde hij het tijdig opnieuw uit de kast en paste de woorden aan. Kate Smith kwam zelf naar Berlin toe, op zoek naar een vaderlandslievend lied. Haar eerste opname hiervan dateert van maart 1939. Ook tijdens de oorlog is ze het blijven zingen en zij is dan ook als geen ander met die song vereenzelvigd. Dat vond zelfs President Roosevelt die Kate Smith ooit aan de Engelse Kroon voorstelde als "This is America".
