45936 MOC Must Toys Book6 12/1/05 7:53 am Page 41 Some key toy manufacturers Britain Abbatt Toys Paul and Marjorie Abbatt were pioneers of innovative educational toys in the 1930s. They set up in business in 1932 selling toys to friends and by mail order from their flat in Tavistock Square, London. Demand was such that in 1936 they opened a child friendly shop at 94 Wimpole Street, designed by their friend the architect Ernö Goldfinger. The Abbatts were his main clients at the time and he designed toys and nursery equipment for them. They were concerned with the play needs of children in general, introducing a range of toys for children with physical disabilities devised by Milan Morgenstern. In 1951 they were instrumental in setting up the Children’s Play Activities Trust Ltd. to promote excellence in toy design and manufacture. After Paul Abbatt died in 1971 the business was bought by the Educational Supply Association. William Britain Ltd. Britains Ltd. was founded by William Britain in London in 1840. At first Britains made tin and clockwork toys and from the 1890s they made model soldiers. It also opened an office in Paris, France in 1905. The company made munitions for both world wars. In 1954 Herald miniatures, makers of unbreakable plastic toys, became a subsidiary of Britains. In 1966 Britains ceased to manufacture its metal soldiers. It was purchased by Ertl Co. in 1997. The Chad Valley Co. Ltd. The Chad Valley trademark was first registered in 1897 when the original company of Johnson Brothers added games to its stationery range.

In Britain, little consumer research had been done before the 1980s and little design input went into good advertising. In fact pre-war advertising as evidenced by the catalogues of Lines Bros. and Kiddicraft was far more eye catching. Combined with the difficulties thrown up by the current economic climate; increased imports, the rising cost of raw materials, increased labour costs and removal of fixed prices, it was inevitable that even large businesses could not guarantee long term security and survival. Desperate measures were tried by some, but by the beginning of the 1980s over sixteen British companies had collapsed including some of the major players; Lesney, Mettoy, Berwick Timpo and Airfix. Eventually these were to be absorbed by other companies in the US and the Far East, as well as in Britain. However, many major British companies managed to survive including some venerable examples, such as Britains, Spears, Hornby, Waddingtons, Galt and Cassidy Brothers. Torquil Norman started Bluebird Toys in 1983, his first product being the now famous Big Yellow Teapot House. This was one of the first ‘container’ houses which broke away from the traditional architectural style of dolls’ houses in favour of this light and colourful family home. • Building Back Better – in Coalville September 1St 2020
Building Back Better – in Coalville September 1st 2020 Summary Coalville C.A.N Communities and Neighbours C.B.S (Coalville C.A.N) with TH!NK FC are looking for partners across the built environment, community building, philanthropy and fundraising sectors to help set the standard for community led development in Coalville, an ex-industrial town in the heart of the country. Through a sustainable, empowering asset-based model, this project enables the community to take ownership of local spaces to provide what the community wants, including affordable accommodation combined with spaces to work and play, all owned and managed locally. The Coalville project is a place-based approach with several buildings being considered, each will need to be financially independent, and work together around the overarching wellbeing theme within the concept of a circular economy and generating its own, sustainable community wealth. Coalville in Context • Coalville is a town of approximately 45,000 population in the Centre of the UK. A history of coalmining still shapes the legacy of the town. The town is proud of its sense of community, mining and engineering heritage and today still has a larger than typical manufacturing and logistics sector. The population represents a good mix of ages and is mainly white British. • The local economy reflects the past industrial heritage, a major logistics hub and being between other more prosperous towns and the three cities of the East Midlands. The birth of the colliery town led to allied industries and over the years many of these have gone including Palitoy of Action Man and Star Wars fame, though Aggregate Industries remain, and has meant the maintenance of the railway line with its potential to open for passengers.

  • Global Warfare
FOREWORD • In the 1980s, the world economy functioned very differently. Hasbro is now a global company that directly overseas production and distribution of GI Joe toys worldwide. In the 80s and 90’s, Hasbro licensed out the rights for production and distribution of GI Joe to various manufacturers around the world. The result was a staggering variety of availability, design, and quality of GI Joe product. As collectors, these international versions of our beloved GI Joe products can be among the rarest, most expensive, and ultimately most satisfying toys to collect. FOREIGN PRODUCTION • Argentina (Plastirama) • Australia (Toltoys) • Brazil (Estrela) • China • Egypt and South Africa (Nilco) • Europe (Hasbro) • India and Russia (Funskool) • Japan (Takara) • Korea (Young Toys) • Mexico (Auriken) • UK (Palitoy) • Venezuela (Rubiplas) Funskool • Around 1988, Indian companies Funskool and MRF teamed to produce GI Joe figures and vehicles in India. Earliest versions of figures found have date stamps of 1988 and were produced with very similar quality to their US counterparts. • After a few years of production, the quality seemed to lower and strange colored vehicles and figures were produced in very small numbers around 1993. These figures and vehicles would become some of the rarest items in the international collecting community as well as some of the most valuable. • Funskool produced figures and vehicles from 1998 to 2004, and again from 2010 to 2011 with reissue figures on cards with explosion back artwork. Europe/UK • The manufacturing and distribution of 3 ¾” GI Joe products was already in place with Palitoy thanks to the existing relationship and the continuing product development of the 12” line through Action Man.

45936 MOC Must Toys Book6 12/1/05 7:52 am Page 24 1960s At the end of the 1960s Britain’s toy exports were doing well, but the time had come for manufacturers to face issues that had largely been sidelined in the hope that things would return to the way they were before the war. Safety concerns were being addressed and by 1961 the British Standards Institute issued new safety regulations. To the dismay of some manufacturers, stringent guidelines were laid down including restrictions on celluloid, no sharp edges, no toxic dyes, secure fastenings in soft toys and detachable keys for wind-up toys. Further levels of control on celluloid and lead in paint were introduced by the government in 1966. Most toys would now be made principally from plastics. Another debate that was going on at this time concerned the need for a more professional approach to the question of toy design. In a paper delivered to the Royal Society of Arts in November 1967, Edward Newmark, Director of James Galt and Co. Ltd., argued that the toy industry’s knowledge of the work done by child psychologists on the importance of toys as educational aids had given the toy industry a social responsibility which it was only just starting to understand. Speaking about the thriving state of the toy industry in Britain at the time, he went on to say: ‘Parallel to this growth has been an immense and radical change in ideas about toys, none of which has come from within the toy trade itself.
