  • Racial Double Standards? the Case of Expected Performance and Dismissals of Head Coaches In
Racial double standards? The case of expected performance and dismissals of head coaches in NBA Carlos Gomez-Gonzalez, Julio del Corral, Andrés Maroto ABSTRACT Professional basketball in the US provides an opportunity to test racial differences in the labor market. In contrast to other professional sports, such as baseball or American football, and, more deeply, to other economic sectors, black Americans are represented in influencing positions as head coaches in this competitive setting. The paper investigates the influence of the race of the coach and performance (winning ratio and an efficiency index relative to expectations) on dismissal decisions. The data includes coach- team information over a 20-year period of time in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the analysis uses several probit models. The results show that black head coaches are more likely to be fired and less prone to quit than white head coaches, ceteris paribus. Both measures of performance (efficiency and victories) also play a significant role in dismissals. Keywords: Basketball, Coaches, Dismissal, Efficiency, Race, Performance, NBA 1 1. Introduction In the words of Samuel Johnson, racial discrimination was a fact "too evident for detection and too gross for aggravation" in the American society of the first part of the 20th century (Arrow, 1998, p. 92). African Americans had a strictly limited access to certain jobs, which prevented them from creating a social network and reaching top positions (Ibarra, 1995). In recent years, although African Americans still face barriers to access leadership jobs in certain sectors, they have successfully scale top positions in professional sports, particularly in basketball.

The NBA once again received men’s sports only A+ for racial hiring practices and men’s sports only B+ for gender hiring practices with scores of 97.4 points (up from 96.4) and 88 points (up from 86.5), respectively. The overall grade was an A with 92.7 points, up from 90.9 in the 2014 RGRC. The NBA was the best for all three categories among the men’s professional sports and achieved the highest grade for racial hiring practices in the history of men’s professional sport. Richard Lapchick, the director of The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport (TIDES or The Institute) and primary author of the report, stated, “No other men’s league reaches the same points for race, gender or the combined score. The NBA remains the industry leader among men’s sports for racial hiring practices. While they did well overall for gender, especially in the League Office, women were still not well represented at the senior team levels and attention needs to be paid there.

He’s about to face the kind of kinesthetic brilliance that first motivated humans to invent slow- motion technology—something, anything, that would allow them to review exactly what happens when movement plays tricks on the mind. The setting is painfully familiar. Something in the offensive structure has broken down at the other end of the floor, igniting a fast break. The entire defense is retreating. The defender has sprinted back down the floor and, as he turns, he sees the blur. The dark form in red has the ball, dribbling and winding his way through the chaos at great speed. He crosses the ball over from right to left and draws it up in two hands just off his left hip in midstride. At this exact moment, the tongue falls out of his face. Sometimes, it shows just slightly between the teeth, but at this moment, the full tongue drops grotesquely, like some comic doll silently mocking the defender.

WRAPP* INTRODUCTION “The truth of the matter is, it’s about the biggest hold-up I’ve ever seen in business. It was highly unethical.”1 That is how John Y. Brown, Jr. (“Brown”), the former owner of the Kentucky Colonels of the American Basketball Association (“ABA”), described the deal consummated between the owners of the other ABA team denied entry into the National Basketball Association (“NBA”) at the time of the 1976 NBA-ABA merger, the Spirits of St. Louis, and the owners of the four ABA teams entering the NBA, the New York Nets, the Indiana Pacers, the Denver Nuggets, and the San Antonio Spurs.2 Essentially, in addition to receiving payment for any Spirits player drafted by NBA teams in the aftermath of the merger, which amounted to roughly $2.2 million, the Spirits’ owners, brothers Daniel (“Dan”) and Ozzie Silna and their lawyer, Donald Schupak, were guaranteed a one-seventh share of each of the four former ABA teams’ NBA “visual media” rights revenue in perpetuity under the terms of the deal.3 While their perpetual share of NBA media rights revenue may have seemed relatively *J.D./MBA, University of Notre Dame, 2014. Martínez Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena. España Resumen This research overcomes some of the drawbacks of the study of Martínez & Caudill (2013) regarding mid- season coaching change in the National Basketball Association (NBA), adding new cases and achieving a disparate methodology. Changing a coach is an important managerial decision which does not gua- rantee improvement in the short term. Only about 12% of new coaches outperformed in a significantly way their predecessors. In order to maximize the probability of success, highly experienced coaches, with a long career as former professional players should be signed. In addition, change should be made before season advances, although it depends of the winning percentage of teams. Key words: coaching change; NBA; sports management.
