A synthesis of tectonically-related stratigraphy in the North Atlantic-Arctic region from Aalenian to Cenomanian time VIDAR BERGO LARSEN Larsen, V. B.: A synthesis of tectonically-related stratigraphy in the North Atlantic-Arctic region from Aalenian to Cenomanian time. Norsk Geologisk Tidsskrift, Vol. 67, pp. 281-293. Oslo 1987. ISSN 0029- 196X. The stratigraphic evolution in the North Atlantic-Arctic region from Aalenian (187 Ma) to Cenomanian (97 Ma) time is described in relation to four tectonic phases. Thefirst two are related to the failed attempt of the opening of the North Atlantic in Jurassic time. Rift basins formed as a response to extensional forces associated with a clockwise rotation of the North American (Laurentian)/Greenland plate and a clockwise rotation of the African plate during the opening of the Tethys. Regional uplift is suggested north of the northward migrating pivot point in the North Atlantic, with responding diachronous development of fan delta sedimentation. The last two phases are related to the slightly anticlockwise rotation of the Greenland plate giving rise to compressional tectonics and uplift along many basins within the region in Neocomian time (Phase III), while extensional tectonics dominated when further rotation and northwest migration of the Greenland plate proceeded in Aptian-Albian time (Phase IV). The stratigraphic evolution within the individual basins ftanking the North Atlantic and the Norwegian Greenland Sea is to a certain degree different, but nevertheless reftects the paleopositions of the basins within the plate tectonic framework through time. One basin may reftect compression and uplift in the same time span (Tectonic Phase) as another basin may be within an extensional regime,i.e.

  • Paleocene Alkaline Volcanism in the Nares Strait Region Related to Strike-Slip Tectonics
Paleocene Alkaline Volcanism in the Nares Strait Region Related to Strike-slip Tectonics Solveig Estrada & Detlef Damaske Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR), Hannover, Germany ([email protected]) The tectonic development of the North Atlantic, the Labrador Sea/Baffin Bay and the Eurasian Basin of Arctic Ocean led to relative movements between the Greenland Plate and the North American Plate. There has been a debate for many years, whether the Nares Strait between northwest Greenland and Ellesmere Island marks an ancient plate boundary in terms of a left-lateral transform fault (Wegener Fault) or whether there was no movement between Greenland and Ellesmere Island at all. New data were acquired during joint German-Canadian geological field work on northeast Ellesmere Island 1998-2000 (Mayr 2008), followed in 2001 by a geoscience cruise in Nares Strait (Tessensohn et al. 2006). Indications for sinistral strike-slip movements followed by compressive tectonics were found at the western margin of northern Nares Strait (Saalmann et al. 2005). Paleogene basins on Judge Daly Promontory, northeast Ellesmere Island, are bounded by a complex pattern of strike-slip and thrust faults. The clastic sediments in the basins are rich in volcanogenic material. Volcanic pebbles within the Cape Back basin near Nares Strait are derived from lava flows and ignimbrites of a continental rift-related, strongly differentiated, highly incompatible element enriched, alkaline volcanic suite (Estrada et al. 2009). 40Ar/39Ar amphibole and alkali feldspar ages indicate that volcanism was active around 61–58 Ma and was probably contemporaneous with sedimentation within the Paleogene pull-apart basins on Judge Daly Promontory formed by sinistral strike-slip tectonics parallel to the present-day Nares Strait.

Chapter 8 SWG Final Report CHAPTER 8 POLAR BEAR HARVESTING IN BAFFIN BAY AND KANE BASIN: A SUMMARY OF HISTORICAL HARVEST AND HARVEST REPORTING, 1993 TO 2014 KEY FINDINGS Both Canada (Nunavut) and Greenland harvest from the shared subpopulations of polar • bears in Baffin Bay and Kane Basin. During 1993-2005 (i.e., before quotas were introduced in Greenland) the combined • annual harvest averaged 165 polar bears (range: 120-268) from the Baffin Bay subpopulation and 12 polar bears (range: 6-26) from Kane Basin (for several of the years, harvest reported from Kane Basin was based on an estimate). During 2006-2014 the combined annual harvest averaged 161 (range: 138-176) from • Baffin Bay and 6 (range: 3-9) polar bears from Kane Basin. Total harvest peaked between 2002 and 2005 coinciding with several events in harvest • reporting and harvest management in both Canada and Greenland. In Baffin Bay the sex ratio of the combined harvest has remained around 2:1 (male: • females) with an annual mean of 35% females amongst independent bears. In Kane Basin the sex composition of the combined harvest was 33% females overall for • the period 1993-2014. The estimated composition of the harvest since the introduction of a quota in Greenland is 44% female but the factual basis for estimation of the sex ratio in the harvest is weak. In Greenland the vast majority of bears are harvested between January and June in Baffin • Bay and Kane Basin whereas in Nunavut ca. 40% of the harvest in Baffin Bay is in the summer to fall (August – November) while bears are on or near shore.

  • (Late Tertiary) As Seen from Prince Patrick Island, Arctic Canada’ JOHN G
ARCTIC WL. 43, NO. 4 (DECEMBER 1990) P. 393-403 Beaufort Formation (Late Tertiary) as Seen from Prince Patrick Island, Arctic Canada’ JOHN G. FYLES’ (Received 20 March 1990; accepted in revked form 14 June 1990) ABSTRACT. The Beaufort Formation, in its typearea on Prince Patrick Island, is a single lithostratigraphicunit, a few tens of metres thick, consisting of unlithified sandy deposits of braided rivers. Organicbeds in the sand have yielded more than 200 species of plants and insects and probably originated during the Pliocene, when the area supported coniferous forest. ThisBeaufort unit forms the thin eastern edge of a northwest-thickeningwedge of sand and gravel beneath the western part of the island. These largely unexposed beds,up to several hundred metres thick, include the Beaufort unit and perhaps other older or younger deposits. On the islands northeast and southwest of PrincePatrick Island (MeighenIsland to Banks Island),the name BeaufortFormation has been appliedto similar deposits of late Rrtiary age. Most recorded Beaufort beds on these islands are stratigraphically and paleontologically equivalentto the “type” Beaufort, but a few sites that have been called Beaufort (suchas Duck Hawk Bluffsand the lower unit at Ballast Brook,on Banks Island) differ stratigraphicallyand paleontologically from the “type” Beaufort. This paper recommends that these deposits (probably middle Miocene) and others like them be assigned new stratigraphic names and not be included in the Beaufort Formation as now defined. Informal names Mary Sachs gravel (Duck HawkBluffs) and Ballast Brookbeds are proposed as an initial step. Formal use of the name Beaufort Formation shouldrestricted be to the western Arctic Islands.

In exposures, relict glacier ice and intrasedimental ice often coexist and look alike but their genesis is strikingly different. This paper aims to present a detailed description and infer the origin of a massive ice body preserved in the permafrost 15 of Bylot Island (Nunavut). The massive ice exposure and core samples were described according to the cryostratigraphic approach, combining the analysis of permafrost cryofacies and cryostructures, ice crystallography, stable O-H isotopes and cation contents. The ice was clear to whitish in appearance with large crystals (cm) and small gas inclusions (mm) at crystal intersections, similar to observations of englacial ice facies commonly found on contemporary glaciers and ice sheets.

Mr. Ekblaw, who was placed in charge of the 1916 expeditin, will present a separate report. The results of the expedition, naturally, depended upon the loca tion of its headquarters. The enforced selection of Etah, North Green- land, seriously handicapped the work of the expedition from start to finish, while the. expenses of the party were more than doubled. The. first accident, the grounding of the Diana upon the coast of Labrador, was a regrettable adventure. The consequent delay, due to unloading, chartering, and reloading, resulted in such a late arrival at Etah that our plans were disarranged. It curtailed in many ways the eageimess of the men to reach their objective point at the head of Flagler Bay, te proposed site of the winter quarters. The leader and his party being but passengers upon a chartered ship was another handicap, since the captain emphatically declared that he would not steam across Smith Sound. There was but one decision to be made, namely: to land upon the North Greenland shore within striking distance of Cape Sabine.

Neoselachian remains (Chondrichthyes, Elasmobranchii) from the Middle Jurassic of SW Germany and NW Poland JÜRGEN KRIWET Kriwet, J. 2003. Neoselachian remains (Chondrichthyes, Elasmobranchii) from the Middle Jurassic of SW Germany and NW Poland. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 48 (4): 583–594. New neoselachian remains from the Middle Jurassic of SW Germany and NW Poland are described. The locality of Weilen unter den Rinnen in SW Germany yielded only few orectolobiform teeth from the Aalenian representing at least one new genus and species, Folipistrix digitulus, which is assigned to the orectolobiforms and two additional orectolobi− form teeth of uncertain affinities. The tooth morphology of Folipistrix gen. nov. indicates a cutting dentition and suggests specialised feeding habits. Neoselachians from Bathonian and Callovian drill core samples from NW Poland produced numerous selachian remains. Most teeth are damaged and only the crown is preserved. Few identifiable teeth come from uppermost lower to lower middle Callovian samples. They include a new species, Synechodus prorogatus, and rare teeth attributed to Palaeobrachaelurus sp., Pseudospinax? sp., Protospinax cf. annectans Woodward, 1919, two additional but unidentifiable Protospinax spp. and Squalogaleus sp. Scyliorhinids are represented only by few isolated tooth crowns. No batoid remains have been recovered. The two assemblages contribute to the knowledge about early neoselachian distribution and diversity. Key words: Chondrichthyes, Neoselachii, Jurassic, Germany, Poland, taxonomy, diversity.
