Book Review: The Misadventures of Nero Wolfe. by Yours Truly Johnny Blogger • 0 Comments. The Misadventures of Nero Wolfe is an anthology of parodies, pastiches, and a few other things that are hard to categorize, all inspired by Rex Stout’s greatest literary creation. I’m going to give a detailed look at everything in the book. “Red Orchids” by French Author Thomas Narcejac finds Wolfe out from the Brownstone to investigate a case with the promise of a rare, red orchid. This translation by Narcejac does a fair job capturing the Wolfe-Archie relationship, but there’s too much emphasis on Wolfe firing Archie, which wasn’t nearly as much of a thing in the novels. It’s not a bad read at all. Next, we get an excerpt from Marion Mainwaring’s book Murder by Pastiche. The book contains several pastiches of detective characters solving mysteries. Here we get a flavor for how the Wolfe pastiche works and the author does a great job capturing both Archie and Wolfe.

  • OPUNTIA Books About the Spread of the Human Race Through the Galaxy, Done As Spenglerian History
LET ALL THE NUMBER OF THE STARS GIVE LIGHT by Dale Speirs CITIES IN FLIGHT (1970, hardcover) by James Blish is a omnibus of four OPUNTIA books about the spread of the human race through the galaxy, done as Spenglerian history. The books were written in various lengths between 1950 and 1962, some of which are fix-ups of short stories, and others rearranged for the 1970 omnibus edition, which is the text I review here.. Canada Day 2014 279 I read the series once in the early 1970s as a teenager in rural Red Deer, a second time in the 1980s as a yuppie in Calgary, and for the third and final time as I thin out my library. It made quite an impression on teenaged Dale, now a stranger to me, living as he did in a rural area where nothing ever happened, and Opuntia is published by Dale Speirs, Calgary, Alberta. Since you are reading where all of the kids couldn’t wait until they could escape to the big city. Fifty this only online, my real-mail address doesn’t matter. My eek-mail address (as years later, having spent the majority of my life as a suburban homeowner, my the late Harry Warner Jr liked to call it) is: [email protected] view of the series is not and cannot be the same. When sending me an emailed letter of comment, please include your name and town in the message. Conjures The Wandering Stars. The first book in the omnibus is THEY SHALL HAVE STARS.

  • Rex Stout Does Not Belong in Russia: Exporting the Detective Novel
Wesleyan University The Honors College Rex Stout Does Not Belong in Russia: Exporting the Detective Novel by Molly Jane Levine Zuckerman Class of 2016 A thesis submitted to the faculty of Wesleyan University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts with Departmental Honors in the Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies Program Middletown, Connecticut April, 2016 Foreword While browsing through a stack of Russian and American novels in translation on a table on Arbat Street in Moscow in 2013, I came across a Russian copy of one of my favorite books, And Be a Villain, by one of my favorite authors, Rex Stout. I only knew about this author because my father had lent me a copy of And Be a Villain when I was in middle school, and I was so entranced by the novel that I went out to Barnes & Noble to buy as many as they had in stock. I quickly ran out of Stout books to read, because at the time, his books were out of print in America. I managed to get hold of most copies by high school, courtesy of a family friend’s mother who had died and passed on her collection of Stout novels to our family. Due to the relative difficulty I had had in acquiring these books in America, I was surprised to find one lying on a book stand in Moscow, so I bought it for less than 30 cents (which was probably around the original price of its first printing in America).

  • A Chronology of Crimes ~ Rt R by Stephen F
    • • TheJournal of The Wolfe Pack • Premier Issue Winterl979 ~ I· A Chronology of Crimes ~ rt r By Stephen F. Schultheis and ij Patricia A. Dreyfus ~; PINPOINTING THE TIME of death is a routine part of any murder investi gation, yet for chroniclers of the Nero Wolfe stories, it is often easier to identify the hour of death than the year. Careful readers will note a number of dis crepancies, for example, when they compare the dates given by WilliamS. Baring-Gould in Nero Wolfe of West Thirtyfifth Street with accounts of events by fictional characters or by actual newspapers. The circumstances involving Hickory Caesar Grind on [CAES], for instance, : must have occurred in September 1937, not September 1938 as Baring-Gould , says. When Wolfe solved the case in [LEAG], which could not have taken place ' any later than November 1934 since it saw magazine publication in June-July ' 19'35, Archie had been working for him and living in the old brownstone for seven years. At the time of the affair of [BAND] (October 1935), Archie had ·been with Wolfe for eight years. In other words, their association must have · begun in 1927. Thus when Archie remarks in [CAES] that he has been study ing Wolfe's face for ten years, there is consistent evidence for dating the case no later than 1937. Once we have the correct date for [CAES], we can properly place both [bult] and [inst] in October 1944. In [bult] Archie says of Lily Rowan, whom he meets for the first time in [CAES] that he "had only known her seven years." :.

  • Nobody Who Claims to Be a Competent Critic Can Say That Rex Stout Does Not Write Well
"Nobody who claims to be a competent critic can say that Rex Stout does not write well. His narra tive and dialogue could not be improved, and he passes the supreme test of being rereadable. I don't know how many times I have reread the Nero Wolfe stories, but plenty. I know exactly what is coming and how it is all going to end, but it doesn't matter. That's wnting. " - P. G. WODEHOUSE S FAR AS I'M CONCERNED, we could end this arti cle right here. I can't think of any higher praise or better explanation of the enduring appeal of an author's work than having another of the great lit eraryA stylists of the Twentieth century italicize it as wnt ing. P. G. Wodehouse wasn't Rex Stout's only fan among the literati. William Faulkner read Stout. So did Kings ley Amis, Ian Fleming, Agatha Christie, E . B. White, Vincent Starrett and M . F. K . Fisher. Bernard de Voto was a friend and fan, as was Robert Sherwood. When Oliver Wendell Holmes died, his copy of Stout's first mystery, Fer-de-Lance, was found to have the Justice's handwritten notation in its margins: "This fellow is the best of them all." Is there anything more that needs saying about Rex Stout? Yes, as it turns out, there's quite a lot. And some of it is bound to surprise you. If the full extent of your knowledge of Stout is that he created the detective duo of Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin, then hold on to your hat.

Kaikki Nero Wolfe -tapaukset From http://www.kopteri.net/koti/kilahti/nero.html Kaikki Nero Wolfe -tapaukset Taulukossa on lueteltuna julkaisujärjestyksessä kaikki Nero Wolfe -tapaukset. Näissä taulukoissa on novellikokoelmat mukana normaaleina kirjoina. "Assault in Browstone" ja "Counterfreit for murder" ovat osittain sama tarina. Myös "Murder is no joke" ja "Frame-up for murder" ovat osittain sama tarina. Osa tarinoista on julkaistu eri nimilllä esim. December 1' 19 65 Ji1 f/J~ f!7~ w REX STOUT by JACQUES BARZUN and THE VIKING PRESS December 1) 1965 ABOUT REX STOUT by Jacques Barzun cannot speak about debts of honor, but debts of pleasure I are a delight to pay; and it is in pursuit of this selfish in dulgence that I unburden myself of a few thoughts about a writer whose stories have given me pleasure for a third of a century. If he had done nothing more than to create Archie Good win, Rex Stout would deserve the gratitude of whatever assessors watch over the prosperity of American literature. For surely Archie is one of the folk heroes in which the modern American temper can see itself transfigured. Archie is the lineal descendant of Huck Finn, with the additions that worldliness has brought to the figure of the young savior. Archie is cynical but an idealist. He is of easy ap proach, simple speech, and simple manners, but he makes the sharpest, subtlest discriminations in his judgments of status, speech, looks, and clothes. He drinks milk, but can describe and savor haute cuisine like any freshly made aristo crat.
