He moved from Scotforth near Lancaster with his family in 1928 to Staffordshire, then got his first job as farm manager to shipping heir Lady Rosamund Mary Harrison, in Maer. He remembers Maer Hall, run by a large staff of maids, cooks, the butler and footmen as well as the farm manager, shepherds and herdsmen at the farm.
