Adjudicator Biographies Super Regional Championship at San Antonio Title Sponsor, Texas Regional and November 1-2, 2013 • Alamadome • San Antonio, TX Super Regional Championships 2013 FALL CHAMPIONSHIPS MUSIC PANEL (alphabetical by last name) Joe Allison, Richmond, KY Dr. Joseph H. Allison is currently Professor of Music at Eastern Kentucky University, serving as the Director of Bands and Graduate Conducting Activities. He taught in the public high schools for 18 years, where ensembles under his direction regularly appeared in regional and national settings. His Sumter (South Carolina) High School Bands were the first internationally to be awarded both the Sudler Flag and Sudler Shield for concert and marching excellence. Dr. Allison is in demand as an adjudicator, clinician and consultant for concert, marching and jazz events throughout North America, Europe and Japan. George Boulden, Richmond, KY George Boulden is the Associate Director of Bands at the University of Kentucky where he serves as the conductor of the Symphony Band, teaches conducting, instructs in applications of music technology and teaches the instrumental music education seminar. Previously, Mr. Boulden served as the Director of the Wildcat Marching Band and Basketball Pep Band from 1995-2008. He taught public school for nine years in South Carolina and Florida before joining the faculty of the school of music at UK in 1995. He has served as an adjudicator, clinician, and guest conductor throughout the United States and Canada. Mr. Boulden also serves as editor of the Kentucky Music Educators Association state music education journal, the Bluegrass Music News, and was most recently honored as the recipient of the 2011 KMEA College/University Teacher of the Year award. Wayne Dillon, Hellertown, PA Wayne Dillon is currently the Director of Bands at the Upper Academy High School in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Mr. Dillon holds a master’s degree in jazz performance from The University of Miami, Florida and completed honors fine arts and education degrees from York University in Toronto, Canada. He has been awarded the State of New Jersey Governor’s teacher recognition award for his work with the music program at Elizabeth High School. He is an active performer and recording artist, an adjudicator for Drum Corps International and has judged the national championships for both Bands of America and DCI over the past 21 years. Mr. Dillon has served as the brass caption head with the Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps, on the staff of the nine-time world champion Cadets of Bergen County and the US Army All American Marching Band. Randy Greenwell, Pendleton, IN Randy Greenwell has been Director of Bands and Chair of the Performing Arts Department at Lawrence Central High School in Indianapolis, Indiana for more than 15 years. In addition to their consistent appearances at both National and State Finals, his Lawrence Central Marching Bands have won two Bands of America National titles and four Indiana State titles. Mr. Greenwell’s concert programs have been honored to have won five Indiana State Concert Band Championships and have been invited on several occasions to perform at the Indiana Music Educators Association State Music Convention and the Bands of America National Concert Band Festival. Mr. Greenwell is also an active music arranger, conductor, judge, clinician, and brass performer. He judges for Bands of America, DCI, and has judged many state championships throughout the country. Paul McGarr, Brantford, ONT Paul McGarr is the director of bands at Upper Canada College Preparatory School and has been since 2007. He has over 20 years of teaching experience at various school boards and community organizations and has served as Artistic Director of the Hamilton Junior Stars Jazz Band. Mr. McGarr is also in high demand as an adjudicator and clinician working all over North America for such sanctions as Drum Corps International, Bands of America and Heritage Festivals. Mr. McGarr has had the pleasure of adjudicating the DCI World Championships and the BOA National Page 1 of 4 Championships 13 times in recent years. Mr. McGarr spent 15 years as musical director, arranger and consultant to many prominent Drum Corps throughout Ontario and is the former Judge Administrator for the ODCA. Mr. McGarr received an Honours Degree from Mohawk College’s Jazz Studies program and majored in Jazz Performance studies (trumpet) with a minor in composition at the University of Toronto. John Philips, Markham, ONT John Phillips teaches undergraduate conducting and graduate music education classes at the University of Western Ontario. For the past three years he was responsible for the curriculum review and implementation of the Arts at the Ministry of Education for the province of Ontario. Mr. Phillips is in demand as an expert on marching music education. He is a member of the MENC Blue Ribbon Panel on marching music standards. In 2010 he chaired the inaugural Marching Music Academy for the MENC Music Education Week and continues in that capacity. He received the 2010 MENC award for Excellence in Marching Music Education. Mr. Phillips has contributed articles to numerous scholarly journals, and most recently provided a composition analysis for volume eight of the highly acclaimed series Teaching Music Through Performance in Band, published by GIA. He is an adjudicator and clinician for Bands of America, and serves as Judge Administrator for Drum Corps International. W. Dale Warren, Fayetteville, AR W. Dale Warren is Director of Concert Bands and Professor of Music in the University of Arkansas Department of Music, where his primary responsibility is conducting the Wind Symphony. Professor Warren received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee and received his Master of Music Education degree from the University of Kentucky. He has guest conducted All-District, All-Region and All-State honor bands, as well as several university bands in 35 states. In addition to Music for All, he also serves as an adjudicator for Musicfest Orlando. Professor Warren serves as chairman of the John Philip Sousa Foundation’s Sudler Shield Award Committee, is a John Philip Sousa Foundation Board Member and is a Past President of the Southeastern Conference Band Directors Association. Professor Warren’s affiliations include NBA, Phi Beta Mu Bandmasters Fraternity, NAfME (formerly MENC), CBDNA, World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, Conductors Guild, ABA, AMEA, Arkansas School Band and Orchestra Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Kappa Kappa Psi, Tau Beta Sigma and Pi Kappa Lambda. Frank Williams, St. Petersburg, FL Frank Williams received his B.S. degree in music education from Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida, and his Master of Music degree from State University of New York in Fredonia, New York. An educator for nearly three decades, he has taught at the junior high, high school, and college levels. Currently, Mr. Williams is the Director of Bands at Boca Ciega High School in St. Petersburg, Florida, where his jazz ensembles have consistently received superior ratings throughout his tenure. Recently, the ensemble won the First Place Gold Status Award at JazzFest USA, sponsored by Downbeat Magazine. Mr. Williams has also been involved in the drum corps and marching band arena for over 20 years. He is the former Brass Caption Head for the world champion The Cadets drum and bugle corps; Suncoast Sound drum and bugle corps; and Magic drum and bugle corps; and is presently a brass consultant for the Glassmen drum and bugle corps. Mr. Williams is a member of MENC, FBA, Kappa Kappa Psi, and Omega Psi Phi, and has served as Vice President for the IAJE Florida chapter. He maintains an active schedule as a freelance composer, arranger, consultant, and clinician throughout the United States. VISUAL PANEL (alphabetical by last name) Mike Anderson, Indianapolis, IN Mike Anderson serves as a program coordinator and visual designer for numerous programs throughout the United States. He recently relocated to Indianapolis and joined the staff at Lawrence Central High School. In addition to Bands of America, Mr. Anderson adjudicates for many other organizations, including Drum Corps International, Winter Guard International and Drum Corps Japan. He is the judges’ coordinator for the Indiana High School Color Guard Association and enjoys spending time assisting the Maui Film Festival. Marie Czapinski, Forest Park, IL Marie Czapinski is a renowned international clinician and adjudicator, and has judged and taught in the United States, Holland, England, and Japan. She judges for DCI, WGI, and BOA. She has served on the Board of Directors for the Midwest Color Guard Circuit for the past 30 years and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 1996. Ms. Czapinski is Page 2 of 4 a co-founder of WGI and was inducted into the WGI Hall of Fame in 2000. She was involved in the formative years of BOA and was inducted into the Music For All Hall of Fame in 2008. She is currently the color guard coordinator for several competitive bands. Ms. Czapinski is the Project Executive for Central Station Development Corp, a real estate development firm in Chicago. She is the author of a book “Financial Forms for Builders, Developers & Remodelers” published and distributed in 2001 by the Home Builders Press, National Association of Home Builders, Washington D.C. Frank Miller, Greensburg, PA Frank Miller is a visual artist, clinician and judge. His involvement in the marching music activity – from student, to teacher, designer and consultant – spans over 41 years. In addition to adjudicating for Bands of America, he has been an accredited adjudicator with some of the most esteemed judging associations around the globe, including the PFCJ, FFCC, Drum Corps Europe, Drum Corps International and Winter Guard International. In his work as a visual design specialist, he continues efforts to educate about the importance of design quality within a variety of marching music activities throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Japan.
