Wood-edge, glades and rides invertebrate assemblage Associated species with Factsheets: Most of the important butterflies and moths for which factsheets have been prepared are associated with this habitat feature; plus red wood ant and violet oil beetle. Description: Wood edges that occur at the interface between established woodland and open habitats such as grassland and heath constitute one of the most important habitat features for invertebrates associated with woodland. Both external and internal wood-edges are considered here, with the latter including both permanent areas of open space such as glades and rides and temporary areas of open ground created by coppicing or coupe-felling. Generally invertebrates associated with this habitat feature occur fairly low down, at heights of no more than 3m. As used here it encompasses a range of successional ‘edge’ features, such as scrub and young trees and the ecotone between these and adjacent open habitats. A feature of many wood-edge invertebrates is their need for both trees or shrubs and herb-rich open habitats. It is one of the most important habitats for invertebrates of British © Oak Mining Bee, Steven Falk woodlands, with many of the scarcer species being warmth-loving and southern-distributed in Europe and occurring here at the northern edge of their range. Areas and status: Though it is widely distributed wherever woodland and scrub habitats are present. The extent and quality of wood-edge habitats are thought to have declined very considerably during the twentieth century. This has partly been as a result of the widespread withdrawal of woodland management such as coppicing, while external wood-edges have seen losses resulting from the polarisation of agricultural management; intensification in fertile lowland districts, and abandonment on marginal land (eg. -

Armadillidium Pictum Brandt, 1833, Discovered in Staffordshire, and Comments on Its Habitat Associations

Alexander 59 Sweetbrier Lane, Heavitree, Exeter EX1 3AQ. e-mail: [email protected] Gregory (2009) suggests that Armadillidium pictum may have been overlooked in areas within its British range. It is now possible to add Staffordshire to the counties where it has been found, extending its known distribution at the southern end of the Pennines. It was found on two occasions in one small area in Dimmings Dale in Staffordshire Moorlands District. This dale is a wooded ravine, a tributary stream of the River Churnet cutting through the Bunter Sandstone and exposing several outcrops of the harder Keuper rocks (according to the SSSI citation). The precise location of the records lies on the south side of the ravine, but on the east-facing slope of a small re-entrant valley (SK054428), within Threap Wood. While the slopes are generally heavily wooded with oak Quercus, this particular patch is very open, more of a large and apparently permanent glade with bracken Pteridium aquilinum and bramble Rubus fruticosus agg. the dominant vegetation, with much climbing corydalis Ceratocapnos claviculata. While beating this vegetation over a sweep net in search of corydalis weevils, a single A. pictum was found in the net on 2 June 2009 and again on 6 August 2009, in virtually the same place. The first specimen was retained as a voucher and identified with the help of Gregory & Richards (2008) . Gregory’s (2009) habitat description – the presence of suitable rocky terrain, such as talus slopes with accumulations of scree, rocks or boulders – is close but in this case the talus slopes are derived from Sandstone and are of a fine sandy material. -

The Strategy acknowledges the role biodiversity plays, not only in many natural processes, but also in the direct and indirect economic, social, aesthetic, cultural and spiritual benefits that we derive from it. The Strategy also acknowledges that pressures brought about by our own actions and by other factors, such as climate change, have resulted in damage to the biodiversity of Wales and calls for a halt to this loss and for the implementation of measures to bring about a recovery. Local Wildlife Sites provide essential support between and around our internationally and nationally designated nature sites and thus aid our efforts to build a more resilient network for nature in Wales. The Wildlife Sites Guidance derives from the shared knowledge and experience of people and organisations throughout Wales and beyond and provides a common point of reference for the most effective selection of Local Wildlife Sites. I am grateful to the Wales Biodiversity Partnership for developing the Wildlife Sites Guidance.
