ASIA-PACIFIC STUDIES Tim Yang, Chair The Asia-Pacific Studies Minor is an interdisciplinary program of study across the humanities and social sciences. It is intended for students who want to develop a knowledge and understanding of the cultures, politics, societies, and histories of Asia and the Pacific Rim, either for their future careers or for their personal interest. The minor will provide students with knowledge of global processes that connect people, places, and technologies within the Asia-Pacific region. The minor consists of a minimum of 20 credits (including 8 upper-division credits) from the following courses listed below. Although an Asian language is not required, it is highly encouraged; up to 8 course credits from Asian language classes at the 200-level or higher may be counted towards the minor. Courses taken while studying abroad may be used in the minor only with approval of the Asia-Pacific Studies Chair. Program Learning Outcomes Students who complete the Asia-Pacific Minor will be able to: Demonstrate basic knowledge of the countries and cultures that make up the Asia-Pacific region. Acquire knowledge of the historical complexity of the Asia-Pacific region. Develop an understanding of contemporary issues and trends in the Asia-Pacific region. IRM-2019-U-019755-Final Abstract This report provides a general map of the information environment of the Pacific Island Countries (PICs). The focus of the report is on the information environment—that is, the aggregate of individuals, organizations, and systems that shape public opinion through the dissemination of news and information—in the PICs. In this report, we provide a current understanding of how these countries and their respective populaces consume information. We map the general characteristics of the information environment in the region, highlighting trends that make the dissemination and consumption of information in the PICs particularly dynamic. We identify three factors that contribute to the dynamism of the regional information environment: disruptors, deficits, and domestic decisions. Collectively, these factors also create new opportunities for foreign actors to influence or shape the domestic information space in the PICs. This report concludes with recommendations for traditional partners and the PICs to support the positive evolution of the information environment. Symposium Proceedings, 2020 Introduction: Waves of Exchange Brittany Myburgh, University of Toronto Their universe comprised not only land surfaces, but the surrounding ocean as far as they could traverse and exploit it... - Our Sea of Islands, Epeli Hau’ofa1 Oceania is connected by waves of movement, from ocean-faring migration to networks of information and exchange. Tongan scholar Epeli Hau’ofa has described Oceania as a “sea of islands,” or a sea of relationships and networks that challenges prescribed geographic boundaries and scales. Arguing for the theorization and use of the term ‘Oceania,’ to describe this zone, Hau’ofa seeks to subvert the ways in which European colonizers, from James Cook to Louis Antoine de Bougainville, conceptually and physically mapped the Pacific Ocean (Te Moana Nui) as islands scattered in a faraway sea.2 The Pacific has long held space in the Western imagination. Called Patō, Rachael’s drum keeps the traditional sound of a lali but incorporates digital capabilities. Reinauguration of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies The Institute of International Relations, Faculty of Law and Social Sciences of La Plata National University has decided to reinaugurate the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS), Department of Asian and Pacific Studies. HISTORY The Institute of International Relations was created on November 28th 1989 by the Superior Council of La Plata National University, and began its activities on September 28th 1990 at the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences. Following its objective of study in depth the different regions of the world in the international arena, the Department of Asian and Pacific Studies was created on August 12th 1991. The Asia and the Pacific regions attract the attention of the world for several decades owing to the extraordinary transformations that happened and still happen in them in the economic, the political and the social fields, on the basis of ancient civilizations. The different countries of these regions have consolidated themself as centers of power increasingly more stronger and influential in a multipolar world. Since its first moments, the Department of Asian and Pacific Studies carried out and supported diverse initiatives to promote the knowledge of the countries of the region, and one area to which it paid special attention was Southeast Asia. Watts, Ph.D. Chapter 1 Diversity in Pacific Island Music (1) S, C/U Pictorial Timeline The Pacific Island region is an area of the globe that has been impacted substantially by various colonial influences. Explore these influences by choosing a Pacific Island locale and creating a pictorial timeline of outside colonial influences on the region including dates of arrival, intents of mission, and evidence of cross-cultural pollination in music and the arts. Your pictorial timeline may include photographs, drawings, or digital illustrations of important events accompanied by short captions describing each event in more detail. (2) AA Musical Diversity Polynesia is a region that is home to many languages, subcultures, and customs and is described by the authors as “musically diverse.” Are there other regions of the world that boast musical diversity? Research another area in the world that features richness and diversity in its musical expressions and compare/contrast it with Polynesia. Use Resource 1.1 as a guide. 506:203 Histories of the Pacific/ Fall 2013 Prof. Matt K Matsuda Office: Bishop House 212, in the Bishop Quad email: [email protected]/ [email protected] SUBJECT : China, Japan, Indonesia, Australia, Samoa, Tahiti, Eastern Island as well as the coasts of North and South America are just a few of the places covered, along with the spice trade, pirates, galleons, naval warfare, colonial societies, and scientific exploration. This course is a survey of Pacific island peoples and cultures and their relations with East Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Americas from early navigators and settlers to the colonial and postcolonial eras of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Also traces modern histories including the Pacific War, the rise of Asian economies, nuclear testing, and global warming impacts. FORMAT : Lectures and review discussion “workshops,” independent readings. OBJECTIVES : 1--Basic elements: students will have a solid grasp of key figures, cultures, events, and chronologies in Pacific History. 2--Themes: students will develop an understanding of major themes in the historical analysis of Pacific History: migration and navigation of island peoples, cross-cultural contacts, social organization, ethnic diasporas, ecological and biological crises, integration in a global commercial economy, nation-building, struggles for sovereignty and identity, legacies of colonialism and tourism. 3--Professor’s investigation: the “Pacific Century” and “Pacific Way” are two ideas which gained a great deal of attention in the last few years. What do these terms mean applied not only to the present, but to the centuries-long history of the Pacific area? Born to Sing: Fiji's "Singing Culture" and Implications for Music Education in Canada
BORN TO SING: FIJI'S "SINGING CULTURE" AND IMPLICATIONS FOR MUSIC EDUCATION IN CANADA JOAN RUSSELL McGiI/ University ABSTRACT. The first part of trus paper describes the singing practices of selected Fijiancommunities, and identifies sorne of the social conditions that support widespread and skillful singing. Next, in order to interpret Fijian musical practices, it proposes a cultural grammar - a set of guidelines or rules that define what individuals within a society, community, or group have to know, produce, predict, interpret or evaluate within a given setting or social group in order to participate appropriately (Heath, 1982; Heath, 1983). In the second part of the paper the proposed cultural grammar is used to generate suggestions for developing a singing culture in a Canadian school. La première partie de ce rapport décrit la pratique du chant de certaines communautés fidjiennes tout en mettant en évidence quelques unes des conditions sociales contribuant à répandre l'art du chant. Pour interpréter les pratiques musicales fidjiennes, l'auteur propose une grammaire culturelle, à savoir un ensemble de directives ou de règles définissant ce que les sujets d'une société, d'une collectivité ou d'un groupe doivent connaître, produire, prévoir, interpréter ou évaluer dans un milieu ou un groupe social donné pour y participer pleinement. (Heath, 1982; Heath, 1983). Dans la deuxième partie de ce rapport, la grammaire culturelle proposée sert à émettre des conseils en vue de l'élaboration d'une culture du chant dans une école canadienne.
