This course is a survey of Pacific island peoples and cultures and their relations with East Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Americas from early navigators and settlers to the colonial and postcolonial eras of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Also traces modern histories including the Pacific War, the rise of Asian economies, nuclear testing, and global warming impacts. FORMAT : Lectures and review discussion “workshops,” independent readings. OBJECTIVES : 1--Basic elements: students will have a solid grasp of key figures, cultures, events, and chronologies in Pacific History. 2--Themes: students will develop an understanding of major themes in the historical analysis of Pacific History: migration and navigation of island peoples, cross-cultural contacts, social organization, ethnic diasporas, ecological and biological crises, integration in a global commercial economy, nation-building, struggles for sovereignty and identity, legacies of colonialism and tourism. 3--Professor’s investigation: the “Pacific Century” and “Pacific Way” are two ideas which gained a great deal of attention in the last few years. What do these terms mean applied not only to the present, but to the centuries-long history of the Pacific area? We will consider not only politics, but tourism, film, and literature as creators of island histories. -

Christian Citizens: Women and Negotiations of Modernity in Vanuatu
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE Christian Citizens: Women and provided by ScholarSpace at University of Hawai'i at Manoa Negotiations of Modernity in Vanuatu Bronwen Douglas In January 1997 I began a comparative research project on gendered engagements with Christian and state ideologies and institutions in Mela- nesia, in the course of which I spent August 1997 in Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, and on the island of Aneityum, in Vanuatu’s extreme south. 1 Determined to ground the project’s broad scope in local perspectives, I undertook a systematic program of interviews with ni-Vanuatu, extended in written correspondence and subsequent meetings. One focus of the interviews was women’s varied experiences of women’s groups and orga- nizations, gender relations, and citizenship in a modern, avowedly Chris- tian Melanesian state. These themes are conspicuously absent from scholarly literature on Vanuatu, except in several pioneering articles by Ma rg a r et Jolly and obliquely in Lissant Bolton’s work on women’s ka s t o m (Bolton 1993, 1998; Jolly 1991a, 1996, 1997).2 That being so, an overvi e w is appropriate: this paper juxtaposes local and wider aspects of ni-Vanu- atu women’s lives as Christians and citizens and casts them in historical perspective. The paper’s ethnographic depth is restricted by the brief time spent in situ and my reliance on lingua franca—Bislama, English, and French. However, I bring to the paper the compensatory breadth of more than a decade’s detailed ethnohistorical research on Aneityum (Douglas 1989; 1998, 22 5 –26 1 ; 1999; 20 0 1; nd), the invaluable help and direction of ni- Vanuatu with intellectual interests similar to my own,3 and comparative insights derived from an ongoing program of related discussions with Kanak, Papua New Guineans, and Solomon Islanders. -

MATSUDA IN THINKING OF SEAS AND OCEANS, Fernand Braudel famously illuminated his Med- iterranean by imagining multiple civilizations joined by trade and cultural exchange; his Annales approach of a longue dure´e built upon archaeological and ecological evidence shaped a brilliant chronicle of kingdoms and powers. Yet as he noted of his subject itself, the Mediterranean was not even a single sea, but rather “a complex of seas, and the seas are broken up by islands, a tempest of peninsulas ringed by insistent coastlines.”1 To establish the project, he knew, “the question of boundaries is the first to be encountered.” Defining the “Pacific” is an equally daunting challenge. -

Postcolonial Privilege in the Pacific: Interrogating Tropes in Literature set in Vanuatu i Abstract In July 1980 the New Hebrides gained independence from Britain and France, transforming the archipelago of 80 islands into Vanuatu, meaning ‘land eternal’ (Miles 1998, 8), a poetic symbol of the struggle to overcome the impacts of dual colonial rule. Restrictions set by colonial administrators during the condominium still exist today, reflected in the privileged lifestyle of expatriates and their ‘employer’ status over ni-Vanuatu peoples. Despite a sizable body of creative work examining the impact of European imperialism throughout the world, there is a dearth of literature set in Vanuatu that examines the effect and legacy of imperialism in contemporary society. This thesis will investigate how creative practice as research can respond to the postcolonial questions that arise from the representation of ni-Vanuatu people. Through practice-led research, I will examine how expatriate memoir contends with the position of privilege from which it is necessarily written. This entails a memoir set in Port Vila over the year 2005, during a period of my father’s illness of Motor Neuron Disease and his care by ni-Vanuatu nurses. -

In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. ABSTRACT This thesis explores the relationship between contemporary art and kastom in Port Vila, Vanuatu. Since the mid-1980s indigenous paintings, drawings, tapestries and sculptures have become prominent features of the urban visual landscape. By way of ethnological survey, this thesis examines current modes of production, circulation and reception to reveal the changing socio-cultural capital of these objects. Based on two periods of extended fieldwork, this research relies on participant observation, semi-structured interviews, studio and exhibition visits, written surveys and informal discussions for its primary data. Focusing on a core group of practicing artists who primarily belong to either the Nawita Contemporary Arts Association or the Red Wave Vanuatu Contemporary Arts Association, this thesis highlights the influences of island affiliation, kin networks and social relations upon the structure of the local artworld. Within the pluralistic matrix of town, artists adopt kastom as thematic content for their work. Representations of the chiefly body, dance routines, marriage ceremonies and traditional stories highlight the means by which makers creatively assert their cultural identity. Similarly, depictions that incorporate stylised icons and codified motifs convey the knowledge, status and entitlement held by different artists. -

Internationally there is a large and growing body of scholarly literature that describes problems of land access and discusses the 'exclusion' of people, often indigenous people, from landscapes. Exclusion connotes the removal of access of people from landscapes and the process by which this occurs; the interactions between legality (often termed regulation), force as acts of violence or threats of violence, the market and legitimation.[1] Regulation (termed legality in this paper) is associated with legal and state instrumentality and is the 'rules regarding access to land and conditions of use.'[2] The market is linked to commodification, the creation of incentives and pressure to individualise land tenure arrangements so as to make land transactions more efficient. [3] Legitimation 'establishes the moral basis for exclusive claims, and indeed for entrenching regulation, the market and force as politically and socially acceptable bases for exclusion.'[4] This concept of legitimation is comparable to the idea of 'the cultural power of law' explored in this paper. However, an exploration of 'the cultural power of law' allows an explicit focus on law as a force for the political and social acceptance of exclusion. -

‘Who Speaks for Culture?’ Challenging Gender and Sexual Violence in Māori and Pacific Island Literature in English Chris Prentice F POETRY AND FICTION ARE WIDELY REGARDED AS FOCUSED ON INDIVIDUALS, WHY DO majority-culture readers tend to foreground questions of (collective) culture, I and cultural representation when reading texts by writers from indigenous or minority cultures? ‘Culture’ in such cases is inclined to signify in an anthropological or ethnographic, rather than aesthetic, sense, and fictional representations of indigenous and minority life and experience are often read as referencing a broader cultural, even ethnic, reality. In Aotearoa New Zealand, part of the context for this is that the now-significant body of Māori literary writing in English began to emerge along with the rise of decolonisation movements and identity politics. The literature in English published during the 1970s-80s Māori political and cultural ‘renaissance’ tended to emphasise Māori ‘cultural difference’ in both content and literary form, whether explicitly assuming, or imputed with, a ‘burden’ of cultural representation. Māori renaissance fiction often included didactic passages that could be termed autoethnographic,1 and writers developed textual aesthetics that reflected cultural patterns and values.
