Chapter 4 the Right-Wing Media Enablers of Anti-Islam Propaganda
Chapter 4 The right-wing media enablers of anti-Islam propaganda Spreading anti-Muslim hate in America depends on a well-developed right-wing media echo chamber to amplify a few marginal voices. The think tank misinforma- tion experts and grassroots and religious-right organizations profiled in this report boast a symbiotic relationship with a loosely aligned, ideologically-akin group of right-wing blogs, magazines, radio stations, newspapers, and television news shows to spread their anti-Islam messages and myths. The media outlets, in turn, give members of this network the exposure needed to amplify their message, reach larger audiences, drive fundraising numbers, and grow their membership base. Some well-established conservative media outlets are a key part of this echo cham- ber, mixing coverage of alarmist threats posed by the mere existence of Muslims in America with other news stories. Chief among the media partners are the Fox News empire,1 the influential conservative magazine National Review and its website,2 a host of right-wing radio hosts, The Washington Times newspaper and website,3 and the Christian Broadcasting Network and website.4 They tout Frank Gaffney, David Yerushalmi, Daniel Pipes, Robert Spencer, Steven Emerson, and others as experts, and invite supposedly moderate Muslim and Arabs to endorse bigoted views. In so doing, these media organizations amplify harm- ful, anti-Muslim views to wide audiences. (See box on page 86) In this chapter we profile some of the right-wing media enablers, beginning with the websites, then hate radio, then the television outlets. The websites A network of right-wing websites and blogs are frequently the primary movers of anti-Muslim messages and myths. -

OPEN LETTER to REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE CHAIR REINCE PRIEBUS Where Does the GOP Stand on Gay Bashing?
OPEN LETTER TO REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE CHAIR REINCE PRIEBUS Where Does the GOP Stand on Gay Bashing? Dear Mr. Priebus, Fifteen years ago, your predecessor called for party members to shun the Council of Conservative Citizens because of the group’s “racist views.”1 “A member of the party of Lincoln should not belong to such an organization,” GOP Chairman Jim Nicholson said.2 His comments had their intended effect: Senior members of Congress distanced themselves from the group. Today, Chairman Priebus, we ask that you take a similar stand and call upon Republican officials to disassociate themselves from the groups behind the upcoming Values Voter Summit. The reason is simple: These groups engage in repeated, groundless demonization of LGBT people — portraying them as sick, vile, incestuous, violent, perverted, and a danger to the nation. The Family Research Council, the summit’s host, is vigorously opposed to extending equal rights to the LGBT community. Its president, Tony Perkins, has repeatedly claimed that pedophilia is a “homosexual problem.”3 He has called the “It Gets Better” campaign — designed to give LGBT students hope for a better tomorrow — “disgusting” and a “concerted effort” to “recruit” children into the gay “lifestyle.” 4 He has condemned the National Republican Congressional Committee for supporting three openly gay candidates.5 Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association, a summit sponsor, has said the U.S. needs to “be more like Russia,” which enacted a law criminalizing the distribution of LGBT “propaganda.”6 He also has said, “Homosexuality gave us Adolph Hitler, and homosexuals in the military gave us the Brown Shirts, the Nazi war machine, and six million dead Jews.”7 Similarly, Mat Staver of the Liberty Counsel, another summit sponsor, has compared those who do not denounce same-sex marriage to those who remained silent during the Holocaust. -

Psychological and Personality Profiles of Political Extremists
Psychological and Personality Profiles of Political Extremists Meysam Alizadeh1,2, Ingmar Weber3, Claudio Cioffi-Revilla2, Santo Fortunato1, Michael Macy4 1 Center for Complex Networks and Systems Research, School of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN 47405, USA 2 Computational Social Science Program, Department of Computational and Data Sciences, George Mason University, Fairfax, VA 22030, USA 3 Qatar Computing Research Institute, Doha, Qatar 4 Social Dynamics Laboratory, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853, USA Abstract Global recruitment into radical Islamic movements has spurred renewed interest in the appeal of political extremism. Is the appeal a rational response to material conditions or is it the expression of psychological and personality disorders associated with aggressive behavior, intolerance, conspiratorial imagination, and paranoia? Empirical answers using surveys have been limited by lack of access to extremist groups, while field studies have lacked psychological measures and failed to compare extremists with contrast groups. We revisit the debate over the appeal of extremism in the U.S. context by comparing publicly available Twitter messages written by over 355,000 political extremist followers with messages written by non-extremist U.S. users. Analysis of text-based psychological indicators supports the moral foundation theory which identifies emotion as a critical factor in determining political orientation of individuals. Extremist followers also differ from others in four of the Big -
Summer 2017 in the YEAR of the CENTENARY
Summer 2017 IN THE YEAR OF THE CENTENARY OF OUR HEAVENLY MOTHER'S APPEARANCE AT FATIMA, REPRINTING THIS ARTICLE BY THE LATE GREAT MICHAEL DAVIES (RIP) SEEMED APT (Reprinted from The Remnant, February 15, 2003) [You will see from the following article that your editor is by no means the first to lament the emasculated and ef- fete castrato who now occupy so many English sees - Ed] In medieval times England was considered throughout Christendom to be the Dowry of Mary. The ancient churches and cathedrals of that country were and are its glory, and there was not one without a chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The largest and most magnificent of these is found in the Cathedral of the Holy and Undivided Trinity of Ely. Construction of the cathedral began in 1083, and the Lady Chapel was completed in 1349. Our Lady of Sorrows The chapel is as big as a church, and was a wonder to behold with its stained glass, seemingly innumerable statues, and gloriously painted walls. It now consists only of windows with plain glass, bare walls, with every statue and bas relief either defaced or totally destroyed by the Anglican so-called reformers. The BBC is unsurpassed throughout the world for the quality of its programs on art and history. I am sure that it must be possible to obtain in the USA videocassettes of a recent series that is totally superb— A History of British Art, written and pre- sented by Andrew Graham Dixon, who also wrote and presented an equally superb series on the Renaissance, with particular emphasis on Florence. -
The Transnational Politics of Uganda's Anti-Homosexuality Bill
The Transnational Politics of Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Bill: Competing Networks and Movement Dynamics A Thesis Presented to The Faculty of the Department of Sociology The Colorado College In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Arts Ashley Speyer Spring 2013 On my honor I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this thesis. _______________ Ashley Speyer Spring 2013 Abstract Transnational advocacy networks (TANs) play an important role in restructuring global governance and maintaining international norms. Recent literature has amassed highlighting the role of transnational advocacy networks, movements, and coalitions in the promotion of international human rights norms. Drawing on social movement theory and literature on transnational advocacy networks, this paper analyzes the dynamics of transnational movement activity surrounding Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Bill. I argue that Ugandan human rights activists strategize with international actors to both strengthen the local movement and conceal Western power. Secondly, the case in Uganda highlights the presence of competing networks working to both promote and limit LGBT rights. Although Ugandan human rights activists are able to overcome traditional North-South power imbalances to a certain extent, they rely on the international community’s implicit pressure and structural power to exhibit influence over the Ugandan government. “I remember the moment when my friend David Kato, Uganda's best-known gay activist, sat with me in the small unmarked office of our organization, Sexual Minorities Uganda. "One of us will probably die because of this work," he said. We agreed that the other would then have to continue. In January, because of this work, David was bludgeoned to death at his home, with a hammer.
