At first sight three very different men, marked by different biographies and animated each by very personal ideas and visions - and yet, all three are so to speak "pioneers" of the Catholic Mission in the 19th and 20th centuries. Through their work - through the founding of Missionary Orders that have since become active on a worldwide scale and through their practical missionary work in Europe, China and Africa - they stand as representatives of many other women and men who have laid the foundation for a truly universal Church which is taking shape increasingly today. The two religious families of the new saints, the Divine Word Missionaries (SVD Fathers) and the "Comboni- Missionare" (Comboni Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, MCCJ) have for a long time now been intensely active in the area of biblical pastoral ministry and as such also actively involved in the life of the CBF. For this rea son we would like to give a more close-up introduction to the three missionaries in the Bulletin Dei Verbum. We will do this not only by way of looking back at their lives, but especially with a view to their significance for today: what was special, what was particularly visionary in the lives of these men, and what is their importance for today? Through them, the article attempts to interpret how the Catholic Church has conceived and implemented its relationships with the African continent in the last two centuries. The article uses history to analyse the thought of the two authors using a qualitative and comparative methodology. Aslanian [email protected] Time: Th 2:00PM- 4:50PM (YRL Library Group Study Room, G15) Office Hours: Th 11:00-12:00 PM or by appointment Office: Bunche Hall 7383 The purpose of this graduate seminar is to introduce students to the history and practice of Armenian paleography, in general, and to reading documents written in various forms of early modern Armenian, in particular. The seminar begins with a general survey of the historical scholarship on Armenian paleography and focuses on the technical dimensions of reading, transcribing, and translating documents written in Armenian script from the early years of the seventeenth to the closing decades of the eighteenth centuries. Weekly meetings will be devoted to scrutinizing, reading together, and translating archival and epigraphic documents, in high resolution digital form, chosen by genre and with consideration of students’ own research needs. These will include a wide selection of epistolary writing in early modern classical Armenian or grabar, comprising of those written by elite members of the Armenian Church (both Apostolic and Catholic) as well as family and mercantile correspondence and commercial contracts written by barely literate more “ordinary” Armenians in Julfa dialect of Armenian or in other vernaculars. A selection of letters written by women from New Julfa in Isfahan and Diyarbekir in the Ottoman Empire in the mid-eighteenth century and stored in the National Archives in Kew (London) as well ass the All Savior’s monastery in Julfa will be featured. The seminar will also introduce students to early modern Armenian epigraphic writing by focusing on tombstones from the Santa Croce Armenian Church in Venice as well as from the Armenian cemeteries in Agra, Chinsura, and Calcutta.

El Achi, M.A. Thesis Advisor: Osama Abi-Mershed, Ph.D. ABSTRACT In the second half of the nineteenth century, both the slave trade and slavery were illegal in Algeria, Tunisia, and the rest of France’s colonial empire. Yet, from the fringes of the Sahara to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, thousands of slaves, mainly women and children, continued to be sold, bought and freed. This dissertation looks at the experiences of servitude and liberation of the children who were born or sold into slavery between the last three decades of the nineteenth century, when France was expanding its imperial territory in Africa and undergoing profound political and social changes in the metropole under the Third Republic. Two main arguments run through the dissertation. First, I argue that, during the fifty years that followed official abolition, sub-Saharan Africans living in Algeria and Tunisia still tended to perform the same economic and social roles as before 1848, and that official abolition reinforced and crystallized racial, class, and gender hierarchies in Algeria and Tunisia. The second argument is that the narrative of slavery, abolition and emancipation in modern North Africa is part of a complex trans-regional history that includes the Americas, metropolitan France, and sub-Saharan Africa.
