We argue that, for certain constrained domains, elaborate model transformation technologies|implemented from scratch in general- purpose programming languages|are unnecessary for model-driven en- gineering; instead, lightweight configuration of commercial off-the-shelf productivity tools suffices. In particular, in the CancerGrid project, we have been developing model-driven techniques for the generation of soft- ware tools to support clinical trials. A domain metamodel captures the community's best practice in trial design. A scientist authors a trial pro- tocol, modelling their trial by instantiating the metamodel; customized software artifacts to support trial execution are generated automati- cally from the scientist's model. The metamodel is expressed as an XML Schema, in such a way that it can be instantiated by completing a form to generate a conformant XML document. The same process works at a second level for trial execution: among the artifacts generated from the protocol are models of the data to be collected, and the clinician conduct- ing the trial instantiates such models in reporting observations|again by completing a form to create a conformant XML document, represent- ing the data gathered during that observation. Simple standard form management tools are all that is needed. -

Tis article argues that this confusion arises because “design” has many different meanings, with different privacy implications, in a way that hasn’t been fully appreciated by scholars. Design exists along at least three dimensions: process versus result, plan versus creation, and form versus function. While the literature on privacy and design has recognized and grappled (sometimes implicitly) with the frst two dimensions, the third has been unappreciated. Yet this is where the most critical privacy problems arise. Design can refer both to how something looks and is experienced by a user—its form—or how it works and what it does under the surface—its function. In the physical world, though, these two conceptions of design are connected, since an object’s form is inherently limited by its function. Tat’s why a padlock is hard and chunky and made of metal: without that form, it could not accomplish its function of keeping things secure. So people have come, over the centuries, to associate form and function and to infer function from form. Software, however, decouples these two conceptions of design, since a computer can show one thing to a user while doing something else entirely. -

Both have typically served the bodies that inhabit them by maintaining environmental control and by presenting a codified exterior to the world. But now there are new kinds of physical resemblances between architecture and clothing. Various kinds of textiles and weaves are now being exploited in landscape and building design. Vast landscapes are shaped by geotexiles while building structures and envelopes exploit tensile, textile strategies, enabled by new lighter and more flexible materials and by the assistance of digital simulations. As well as becoming lighter, buildings are also becoming increasingly more temporary. The lifespans of buildings are ever shorter as their inhabitants become more transient, moving frequently from city to city. Evidence of this nomadic lifestyle can be found in fashion. Clothing, the portable envelope worn on the body, now provides some of the functions formerly associated with architecture. Designers are exploring the possibilities of integrated lights in clothes, pockets to carry portable electronic devices as well as soft electronic devices that are embedded in technical fabrics. Kafaridou Keywords: sustainability, design process, paper-mass, product design 1. Introduction This paper explores the term “Interior Design” and in particular the relationship of the interior design profession with its direct and indirect impacts on the environment. Through a brief analysis, we explore this close relationship, establishing opportunities designers have to promote environmental sustainability. This work goes on to elucidate the role of the interior designer in the delivery of sustainability, providing examples from literature. Further, the process of design, within a context of sustainability is examined, from the design purpose, source of inspiration and subject through to the selection of materials, method of construction, communication of object’s messages and finally, the realization of the idea and usage. Finally, the paper expands the relationship of the interior design profession to the wider scope of social and economic sustainability and suggests a strategy which leads to the involvement of community to promote the uptake of sustainability. In summary, this paper presents an example of an innovative approach to design practice, working towards the promotion of holistic sustainable practice. 1.1 The definition of Interior Design/Architecture John F. Pile (1978 p.27) defined the term ‘design’ as a term which ‘describes all of the decisions that determine how a particular space will be.’ He explained further that ‘design’ can also be described as a determination of form, with form understood to mean every aspect of every quality including size, shape, material, structure, texture and colour that makes one particular physical reality different from any other’.
