he third training programme to train known rex of the Tmaster resource persons as part North American continent, although of the nation wide campaign on 'Planet the two never met. The young man who was talking During the programme participants to me was Dr. Ashu Khosla, the visited to the Ropar Wetalnd site and scientist associated with the team the Geology Department of Punjab Picture of life-size Rajasaurus constructed in which finally established the University. A detailed report of the visit Indroda Park, Gandhi Nagar, existence of these giant creature, to Ropar Wetland, a ramsar site was published in the once ruled the Indian subcontinents. For me It was very difficult December2008 issue of the VIPNET News. The visit to Geology to hold myself from asking more and more about the Department of Punjab University was equally interesting. The Rajasaurus like the story of its discovery, during which period most thrilling experience and equally a great visual delight was and in which part of the earth, they were wandering on earth the gallery of the geology department, etc. Dr. Ashu asked me to accompany displaying various fossilised specimens him to his room to have a cup of tea of different plants and amimals. A with him. In his room, again I found a number of mineral samples were also number of which, he said, has displayed which, as we were told, were been collected from different part of the collected from different part of the country and research is on under the country. The huge fossilised of guidance of Prof.Ashok Sahni to give elephents was really eye catching. A them their identity. I had a long chat few specimens were depicted in the with Ashu Kholsa. The story about the glass cases and few were displayed discovery of ‘Rajasaurus Narmadensis on open plateforms. Suddenly, I found ‘as narrated by Ashu was very a relatively newly constructed glass interesting and mind blowing. It was case depicting a which look like not only the story of reconstruction of the skull of some reptilian. Since I was the skull of Rajasorous but the story guessing about the , suddenly, Dr. Ashu Khosla with the collection of fossils of how the method of science was from my back somebody told me that used to reconstruct the Rajasaurus this is the reconstructed skull of the ‘Rajasaurus Narmadensis’, from scattered bit of fossils found from different locations. He the one of the biggest carnivorous found on the Indian also gave me some research papers and the cutting of some subcontinent and in all probability a contemporary of the well- news papers and the magazines which reported about the

Rajasaurus is unique in the sense as it has been found only in India so far. From a collection of 33 bones, including braincase, vertebrae, jaw, limbs, tail bone, etc. the morphological details regarding the size and form of Rajasaurus have been conceived. Rajasaurus appears to be a stocky dinosaur with an unusual head crest. From the heavy weight of the it can be concluded that the dinosaur was probably a heavy-meat- eating carnivorous The Rajasaurus was about 30-feet-long with its unusually long horn and a strong exterior face suggesting that it use to used its head to pound its prey and eat it. Interesting, its teeth, are much smaller than those found in other dinosaurs. To ensure its princely appearance, Rajasaurus narmadensis was crowned with a doublecrested horn on its forehead. Considering the giant size of it, the name given is Rajasaurus Narmadensis, which means regal reptile from Narmada. A view of Geology gallery of Punjab University Its specific name, originating from Narmada (Narmada , 6 crores and 70 lac ago. It is therefore aptly River), denotes its habitat environs, stretching from named as R.narmadensis. Its body measured some 9 m in length Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh to Kheda in Gujarat, all and 3 m in height. The heighest point in its body was in the along the length of the Narmada River The evidence suggests that it was 67-million year old. (The sediments yielding the fossil remains of Rajasaurus are dated 67 million year) If so, then Rajasaurus may appear towards the extreme end of the era of dinosaurs and had moved through the entire Narmada valley, before the emergence of the Himalayas on the Indian subcontinent. The carnivorous Rajasaurus, which lived in the Period at the end of the dinosaur age, preyed on long-necked titanosaur sauropods, herbivorous dinosaurs that also roamed the Narmada region. Bones from both dinosaurs were found together. Indian paleontologists recently found (fossilized dung) that provide additional clues to the diet of those titanosaurs. Rajasaurus from the Jabalpur fossil locality also. Rajasaurus narmadensis is the first Indian dinosaur of pelvic region. The contemporaneous dinosaur community of the meat-eating Rajasaurus also included some herbivorous sauropod dinosaurs, which are yet to be fully known. The successively next Deccan volcanic eruption quickly burried the dinosaurian remains in the sediments, leading to their good preservation as fossils. Which month has larger and smaller day time?

As part of International Year of Astronomy 2009, from the month of January 2009, we are starting a new column “Astronomy Activity”. Through this column we will be suggesting for your club some hands-on activities based on observation. Each activity can be undertaken in group. It is strongly recommended that each group should follow the procedure as given to come up with their findings. For doing these activities you need to be slightly patient as these activities may take a few days to month or even a whole year. We hope you all enjoy doing these activities and come up with some interesting results. Do not forget to write us back your findings in a report form. The best reports of selected clubs for each activity may get a surprise gift from VIPNET News. Wish you a Happy New Year of Astronomy (IYA 2009)

Problem: Which month has larger and smaller day time? Aim: Finding out which month has larger and smaller duration of day in the Year 2006. Format for Observation Table Tools: Wall calendar mentioning sunrise and sunset time.

Procedure: To do the experiment fallow the below procedure.

1. Get the calendar which shows sunrise and sunset time for each day of the year.

2. Fill the observation table with the time of Sunrise and Sunset.

Theory: There are countable reasons for larger and smaller duration of the day and night. Some of them are: (i) Earth rotate on its axis (ii) Earth’s axis of rotation is not exactly vertical (iii) Earth is spherical in shape and hence observers position on the globe is not same for all etc. All these reasons give rise to the difference in length of the day and night.
