SPRING 2012 25 A Nuyorican Absurdist: Pedro Pietri and His Plays of Happy Subversion David Crespy Jerzy Grotowski once wrote of the visionary Antonin Artaud, “He wasn’t entirely himself;” the same might be said of the late poet Pedro Pietri—who wasn’t entirely himself since he began writing plays (Grotowski 117). Pietri’s body of plays, having been produced in New York since the late sixties and early seventies, recommends itself as an example of the wave of Nuyorican theatre in the US prominent at that time—characterized by experimentation in form and the merging of social issues within that form (Mohr 92). For Raphael Dalleo and Elena Machado Sáez, Pietri is a transi- tional figure, moving from the “anti-colonial project” of his early 60’s poetry to “reconcile himself to the emergence of the Post-Sixties Order” and, in so doing, reaching out to a broader audience (Dalleo and Sáez 12). After the 1960s, Pietri chose to “disorient” himself from the mass of populist social- realism that had characterized much of Latino/a playwriting prevalent before and up to the late 1960s, and to find his voice in his own brand of Nuyorican absurdism that has at its heart “a strong affirmation of puertorriqueñismo, pride in one’s essence and heritage” (Mohr 95). Reading Pietri is a great deal like reading Ionesco; there is the same cheerful dismemberment of language, the same static violence, and above all, a calculated disorientation which serves to scourge and reinvest language (in this case, three languages: English, Spanish, and Spanglish) in ways which skew all reasoned attempts to make sense. -

About the Centro Film Collection The Centro Library and Archives houses one of the most extensive collections of films documenting the Puerto Rican experience. The collection includes documentaries, public service news programs; Hollywood produced feature films, as well as cinema films produced by the film industry in Puerto Rico. Presently we house over 500 titles, both in DVD and VHS format. Films from the collection may be borrowed, and are available for teaching, study, as well as for entertainment purposes with due consideration for copyright and intellectual property laws. Film Lending Policy Our policy requires that films be picked-up at our facility, we do not mail out. Films maybe borrowed by college professors, as well as public school teachers for classroom presentations during the school year. We also lend to student clubs and community-based organizations. For individuals conducting personal research, or for students who need to view films for class assignments, we ask that they call and make an appointment for viewing the film(s) at our facilities. As the 1990s progressed, masculinity crises and millennial anxieties intersected with an increasing fixation on nostalgic popular histories of World War II. The representative masculine figures proffered in Steven Spielberg films and Tom Hanks roles had critical relationships to cultural crises surrounding race, reproduction and sexuality. Nostalgic narratives emerged as way to fortify the American nation-state and resolve its social problems. The WWII cultural trend, through the specter of tributes to a dying generation, used nostalgic texts and images to create imaginary American landscapes that centered as much on contemporary masculinity and the political and social perspective of the Boomer generation as it did on the prior one. -

THINKING GENDER 2012 Performative Metaphors: The "Doing" of Image by Women in Mariachi Music. Leticia Isabel Soto Flores In music studies, scholars have often explored music as a metaphor for emotions, thoughts, and life. In the 19th century, music critic Edward Hanslick recognized the inherent metaphorical sense of musical discourse. As he stated in 1891, "what in every other art is still description is in music already metaphor", (Hanslick 1986: 30). When verbalizing what music is, from representation to technique, one cannot avoid using figurative language, metaphors in particular, because a verbal description of sound is, of necessity, an interpretation. In the first case regarding metaphors in music, metaphorical language is used to describe music in relation to musical practice or music theory. These metaphorical descriptions have unavoidably succumbed to the ideological horizons manifested through language. Musicologist Susan McClary refers to this as gendered aspects of traditional music theory in Feminine Endings (1991), a founding text in feminist musicology. She states: "music theorists and analysts quite frequently betray an explicit reliance on metaphors of gender ("masculinity" vs. "femininity") and sexuality in their formulations. The most venerable of these—because it has its roots in traditional poetics—involves the classification of cadence-types or endings according to gender" (McClary 1991: 9). Musicians and music critics utilize the terms “feminine endings” and “masculine endings” to describe how a cadence ends, most without ever realizing that these metaphors perpetuate sexual difference through musical language. In mariachi music, a similar situation has manifested with the increasing participation of women mariachi musicians. As more and more women perform in mariachi ensembles, the songs traditionally in a vocal register for men are necessarily transposed to suit the female voice. -

One was Prof. Eugen Fischer, head of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute of Anthropology, who was a leading proponent of ‘Social Darwinism’ and the Third Reich‘s racial theory. Fischer inspired the Nuremberg Laws and greatly influenced Hitler‘s personal views on the Jews. The other author was the well-known German theologian Gerhard Kittel, known for his seminal dictionary on biblical Greek – which is still a standard text for many Bible students today. Kittel also was a leading figure in the Entjudungsinstitut, Hitler’s special institute to de-Judaize the Bible. Chasteen) This dissertation offers two premises. First, there is a deep history of relationships between power, horsemanship, and constructions of masculinity in modern Mexico. Second, because of this history, Mexicans in various eras and situations have depended on rural equestrian costumes, identities, and traditions to influence, interpret, and navigate the world around them. Part 1 of this dissertation consists of three chapters and provides an overview of the development of Mexican equestrian customs and the ways that Mexicans in colonial, independent, and revolutionary Mexico used horsemanship to make their lives meaningful, central, and sustainable. Part II, composed of five chapters, shifts to a discussion of the emergence of the equestrian sport community of organized charrería and the way that organized charros continued the practice of transforming Mexico’s equestrian past into a form of strategic cultural capital. Post-revolutionary organized charros, cognizant of the rich equestrian history they had to draw upon, used the idea of Mexican horsemen’s historic contributions in order to claim relevance in post-revolutionary Mexico as the heirs and latest representatives of that historically-significant equestrian tradition. -

Literatura puertorriqueña II Prof. Juan Otero Garabís Correo electrónico: [email protected] Oficina LPM 320 Horas de oficina M J 11am-12m Prontuario Descripción La segunda parte del curso Literatura puertorriqueña tiene como objetivo contribuir al desarrollo intelectual de los y las estudiantes mediante el contacto con las expresiones literarias de Puerto Rico del siglo XX. Para ello, las y los estudiantes examinarán diferentes textos que abordan las situaciones de la isla a lo largo del siglo XX. La temática de este curso gira en torno al estudio de las características que definen la literatura y la identidad puertorriqueña, según representadas en textos de creación y de crítica literarias del siglo XX. Es un curso panorámico que persigue desarrollar la capacidad de análisis de los y las estudiantes, por lo que se requiere su participación en las discusiones de los textos. Además, intenta promover el interés de los y las estudiantes por ampliar sus estudios en literatura y la historia de Puerto Rico en el futuro, ya sea por su cuenta o prosiguiendo cursos más especializados. Se entiende el estudio de la literatura como un proceso de creación de conocimiento, por lo que se considera a éste como una actividad y no como un objeto que el profesor pueda otorgar a los estudiantes. The interview took place in Brooklyn, NY, at Sánchez's studio, and was conducted by Josh T. Franco for the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. Juan Sánchez and Josh T. Franco have reviewed the transcript. Their corrections and emendations appear below in brackets with initials. This transcript has been lightly edited for readability by the Archives of American Art. FRANCO: This is Josh T. Franco, interviewing Juan Sánchez on October 1, 2018, at Juan's studio in Brooklyn, New York. So, Juan, let's just get started with the day you were born and the context of your family and early childhood. JUAN SÁNCHEZ: Well, my mother and father came from Puerto Rico. They came from Puerto Rico in the early '50s. They met here. My mother was born in Maunabo, Puerto Rico in 1919, and she passed away in 1987. My father was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, but I'm not quite sure—I think he was born in 1923, but I'm not quite sure about that; I have to check that out. -

Charrería is a Mexican cultural tradition that stems from the Spanish-inspired charreada. The charreada is a festive event that is similar to an American rodeo in its variety of competitive equestrian activities. Like the American “rodeo culture,” Charrería extends beyond horses and riders to include aspects such as costume, music, and food that bring a uniquely Latino culture to a sport that has its roots in Spain. The charreada began in Mexico in the 16th century when horses were introduced by the Spanish. As the Spanish tried to develop Central America for their own economic gain, they created an entire culture centered around agriculture and ranching in the haciendas they constructed. This is the culture that is reflected in Charrería. Although the main event is foreign-inspired, the culture reflected in the clothing, saddles, belts, hats, and spurs is largely inspired by traditional indigenous art. The Charrería has endured over five centuries because of the strength of the skills, sensibilities, and traditions that transcend regional and generational differences. Fearing the eventual loss of the Charrería culture, a group of charros, or the “cowboys,” who participate in the charreadas, united and formed various associations to preserve and promote this national culture. The Federación Mexicana de Charrería was founded in Mexico City in 1933 to govern the different charros associations that emerged.
