CYCLIC FINGERINGS FOR SCALES IN DOUBLE STOPS.................................... 28 SUMMARY 0 o o . ................................................................................. 29 Ill A STUDY OF CYCLIC FINGERINGS OF DIATONIC ARPEGGIOS AND SCALES FOR THE VIOLIN INTRODUCTION There has long been a need for some simple devising which would permit bowed string instrumentalists to take advantage of repetitive or cyclic ma­ neuvers, by the octave, in extended scales and arpeggios. The prevalent fingerings for such passages through two or three octaves has each octave fingered differently and with great variety of place of shifting and of the shifting intervals. The "muscle memory* required to do any three octave scale or arpeggio on a bowed string instrument is quite a feat. The precise physical and aural controls for each pitch and each sh ift are most demanding. If the time element requires great speed the problem approaches the impossible© Every musician wishes to be able to ."get over" his instrument with ce­ lerity. But life and patience are too short for most of us to have time to acquire good scale and arpeggio technic from the usual instructions© It is notable that a very low percentage of violin students progress to an ability eqpal to the needs of elementary solos,, ensembles or orchestras© There can be a multiplicity of reasons why any particular student drops his instrument; but a very common cause could be attributed to lack of technical promise from failures to manage prescribed but not too well organized fingerings© The study of an instrument as intimate and difficult as the violin demands suc­ cess of satisfactory accomplishment from the drudgery of practicing endlessly the conventional fingerings as exemplified by Schradieck, Hrimaly and a host of others. This harassing situation has long persisted. IV The w riter has been in charge of school and college music departments for many years and feels that the foregoing technical difficulties explain to some extent why good school and college orchestras are so few, and the elimination of potentially able students is so frequent. The writer’s many years of teaching gave him cause and opportunity to get violin students and orchestras over their instruments. The devices here listed have been successfully used with individuals and groups. Written descriptions or explanations can not have the merits of per­ sonal demonstrations nor of perscriptions to fit needs as they appear. This thesis does not pretend to be a panacea for a ll the troubles of violinists. If it removes, for some, one set of stumbling blocks and discour­ agements i t w ill have served its purpose. ARGUMENT The fingerings and shiftings here listed are conventional with the excep­ tion of some uses of "extensions." The groupings of those fingerings and shiftings together with applications in ways of doing arpeggios and scales are original. Another claim to original­ ity and ingenuity is the compact way in which many of the materials and problems are tabulated. Protests from those instructors and players who were reared in the "old school" are anticipated. The condemnation of anything at variance with respect­ able age and habits is to be expected. (It is hoped that the examples are adequate for this type of thesis.     Naming a Chord Once you know the common names of the intervals, the naming of chords is a little less daunting. Still, there are a few conventions and short-hand terms that many musicians use, that may be confusing at times. A few terms are used throughout the maze of chord names, and it is good to know what they refer to: Major / Minor – a “minor” note is one half step below the “major.” When naming intervals, all but the “perfect” intervals (1,4, 5, 8) are either major or minor. Generally if neither word is used, major is assumed, unless the situation is obvious. However, when used in naming extended chords, the word “minor” usually is reserved to indicate that the third of the triad is flatted. The word “major” is reserved to designate the major seventh interval as opposed to the minor or dominant seventh. It is assumed that the third is major, unless the word “minor” is said, right after the letter name of the chord. Similarly, in a seventh chord, the seventh interval is assumed to be a minor seventh (aka “dominant seventh), unless the word “major” comes right before the word “seventh.” Thus a common “C7” would mean a C major triad with a dominant seventh (CEGBb) While a “Cmaj7” (or CM7) would mean a C major triad with the major seventh interval added (CEGB), And a “Cmin7” (or Cm7) would mean a C minor triad with a dominant seventh interval added (CEbGBb) The dissonant “Cm(M7)” – “C minor major seventh” is fairly uncommon outside of modern jazz: it would mean a C minor triad with the major seventh interval added (CEbGB) Suspended – To suspend a note would mean to raise it up a half step.

Because the seventh scale degree in a natural minor scale is a whole step below tonic instead of a half step, the name is changed to subtonic, rather than leading tone. Leading tone ALWAYS indicates a half step below tonic. Notice the change in the qualities and therefore Roman numerals when in the natural minor scale.

Specifically, scale-degree qualia are evaluated in relation to a local harmonic context, and rhythm qualia are evaluated in relation to a metrical context. After reviewing some of the philosophical background on qualia, and briefly reviewing some theories of musical qualia, three studies are presented. The first builds on Huron's (2006) theory of statistical or implicit learning and melodic probability as significant contributors to musical qualia. Prior statistical models of melodic expectation have focused on the distribution of pitches in melodies, or on their first-order likelihoods as predictors of melodic continuation. Since most Western music is non-monophonic, this first study investigates whether melodic probabilities are altered when the underlying harmonic accompaniment is taken into consideration. This project was carried out by building and analyzing a corpus of classical music containing harmonic analyses. Analysis of the data found that harmony was a significant predictor of scale-degree continuation. In addition, two experiments were carried out to test the perceptual effects of context on musical qualia. In the first experiment participants rated the perceived qualia of individual scale-degrees following various common four-chord progressions that each ended with a different harmony.

    Seventh Chord Progressions In Major Keys In this lesson I am going to focus on all of the 7th chord types that are found in Major Keys. I am assuming that you have already gone through the previous lessons on creating chord progressions with basic triads in Major and Minor keys so I won't be going into all of the theory behind it like I did in those lessons. So What Makes A Seventh Chord Different From A Triad? A Seventh Chord IS basically a triad with one more note added. If you remember how we can get the notes of a Major Triad by just figuring out the 1st, 3rd and 5th tones of a major scale then understanding that a Major Seventh Chord is a four note chord shouldn't be to hard to grasp. All we need to do is continue the process of skipping thirds to get our chord tones. So a Seventh Chord would be spelled 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th. The added 7th scale degree is what gives it it's name. That is all it is. :) So what I have done for this theory lesson is just continue what we did with the basic triads, but this time made everything a Seventh Chord. This should just be a simple process of just memorizing each chord type to it's respective scale degree.
