I Fought The Odds (And The Odds Won) Mixed Martial Arts Prediction: Style Inference with Graph Algorithms Andrew Hunter Mixed Martial Arts - Overview • Rapidly growing new sport • 1-on-1 fighting allowing strikes, wrestling, chokeholds, and joint-locks • Eclipsed boxing in 2006 PPV revenue • Several competing promotions: UFC, EliteXC, WEC, DREAM, many others • Like many sports, extensive gambling Gabriel Gonzaga knocking out Mirko Filipović at UFC 70 Mixed Martial Arts – Unpredictable •Fights aren’t random •Skills and athletic ability matter •Fights aren’t sure things •Upsets happen all the time Matt Serra KOing Georges St-Pierre, a 11-1 favorite coming in Conclusion: We can make a lot of money if we can accurately predict fight winners. My Goals Vegas sets odds by many factors: •Physical characteristics •Past record •Mutual fights •Styles •Expert knowledge These are hard to automate: •How do I tell a computer “Lyoto looks a bit stronger, but Lyoto Machida about to submit Rameau Thierry his chin’s a little suspect?” Sokoudjou I want to try and make predictions based off one piece of data: who has fought whom, and what happened. I won’t beat Vegas, but I should be able to make decent predictions. Power Levels •Ideally Bob would have rating 1000, and Alice would have rating 500. •Then, Bob probably wins •Used in chess, go, soccer (!) •ELO rating/algorithm well known, simple to use, produces great results There’s no way that can be right, can it? For Immediate Release: July 1, 2008 ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP® UFC 89: BISPING vs. LEBEN MICHAEL "THE COUNT" BISPING vs. CHRIS "THE CRIPPLER" LEBEN LIVE FROM THE NATIONAL INDOOR ARENA, BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND SATURDAY, OCT. 18, 2008 London, England (UK) - The Ultimate Fighting Championship® (UFC®) organization will storm into the British Midlands for the first time when UFC 89: BISPING vs. LEBEN touches down at the National Indoor Arena, Birmingham, on October 18. In a middleweight showdown, which has set mixed martial arts fans ablaze with anticipation, England’s own Michael ‘the Count’ Bisping will finally collide with Chris ‘the Crippler’ Leben. Two of the most explosively exciting strikers in the 185lbs division, Bisping and American Leben were originally set to face off in London at UFC 85 in June but, now, are set to do battle in Britain’s Second City. “This is one of the most exciting fights we could have made in the middleweight division,” said UFC President Dana White. “Bisping has looked a monster since dropping down to 185lbs, and he’s dominated Charles McCarthy and Jason Day inside a round already this year. And Leben is coming into UFC 89 with a ton of momentum, too, having just knocked out Terry Martin and Alessio Sakara; two of the biggest wins of his career.” White added, “That these two guys were willing to fight each other in London with six weeks’ notice shows you the kind of warriors they are. But now we will see this fight probably as it should have always happened, with both guys getting plenty of notice and coming in 100% ready for each other.” Tickets for UFC 89: BISPING vs.

Current Jewish Questions Boxing / Mixed Martial Arts I. Jewish Boxers and MMA Fighers 1. Allen Bodner – Boxing: A Jewish Sport Jews' participation in professional boxing in the interwar period is not as surprising as it might seem to be. http://www.myjewishlearning.com/culture/2/Sports/Sports_and_Judaism/America/Boxing.shtml?p=0 When Jewish sports fans are asked to name Jewish boxers, invariably they will mention Benny Leonard and Barney Ross, the famous champions. Sometimes Ruby Goldstein, a contender, will be added, and more infrequently "Slapsie" Maxie Rosenbloom, a great light-heavyweight champion. And there it ends. Even knowledgeable sports fans have no notion that there were many outstanding Jewish champions and contenders, and thousands of Jewish boxers in the twenties, thirties, and even forties. "How was it possible?" they will ask. "It is so contrary to Jewish tradition and culture. It is astounding." In fact, Jews entered the ranks of American boxing in large numbers and by 1928, were the dominant nationality in professional prizefighting, followed by the Italians and the Irish. Ten years later, Jews sank to third place, preceded by the Italians and the Irish. When World War II ended and the G.I. Bill of Rights and other avenues of advancement became available, boxing was no longer attractive to the Jews as participants. By 1950, there were virtually no Jewish boxers, and their number has been minuscule ever since. A similar decline occurred among Jewish trainers, but Jewish managers, promoters, and matchmakers continue to maintain a presence. On the surface, it seems unlikely that Jews ever participated in such a brutal sport.
