This instability had itS rootS in, among other thingS, the religiouS movement known aS the Reformation. ProteStant and Catholic factionS relied upon biblical textS, SermonS, tractS and other circulating workS to Spread their propaganda, with muSical SettingS of the PSalms alSo finding a part in thiS diSSemination. Beginning in the reign of Edward VI, the metrical pSalterS of the Anglican Church functioned aS perSonal devotional inStrumentS aimed at laity poSSeSSing limited muSical and academic training. They provided, in their Simple tuneS and metricized textS, an eaSy meanS of memorizing the PSalms. Latin motetS, on the other hand, eSpecially thoSe circulating in copied manuScript collectionS in the latter half of the sixteenth century, reflected the political situation of EngliSh CatholicS who were legally unable to worShip openly by incorporating Such textS aS PSalm 50 [51] (Miserere mei, Deus) and PSalm 78 [79] (Deus, venerunt gentes) into lamentS of perSecution. -

This dissertation argues that in addition to its identities as scriptural text and monophonic musical score, the WBP functioned as a music instructional book, intended by its publishers to improve popular music education in Elizabethan England. Motivated by Protestant ideology, the WBP promoted musical literacy for the common people. This dissertation further demonstrates that the WBP made a hitherto unrecognized contribution to music theory in early modern England, introducing the fixed-scale solmization system thought to originate at the end of the sixteenth century. -

Authority and Attribution in the Sternhold and Hopkins Psalter* rebecca m. rush Yale University This essay addresses the vexed question of the genre of the Sternhold and Hopkins psalter by considering the framing of the psalms in the early editions printed in England and on the continent. It is undeniable that all of the producers of the Sternhold and Hopkins psalter were committed to the dissemination of Scripture in the vernacular and that many were concerned with approximating the hebraica veritas. But comparing the title pages, prefaces, and marginal notes included in the sixteenth-century versions of the psalter with those of contemporary prose translations reveals that the editors of the psalter distin- guished the metrical psalms from prose translations by carefully marking them as the poetic products of particular authors. In calling on the names and titles of the versifiers as sources of the volume’s au- thority, the editors of the Sternhold and Hopkins psalter forged an understanding of poetic authorship that would prove influential not only for later psalm translators but for English poets more generally. Indeed, this essay makes the case that the practices of authorial attribution employed in the psalters may have directly influenced the presentation of more celebrated verse anthologies like Tottel’s Songes and Sonettes. The “Sternhold and Hopkins” Project: a Case Study of the Impact of Translation on Culture, Society, Mentalities, Book Production and Circulation
Paola Baseotto Università degli Studi dell’Insubria The “Sternhold and Hopkins” Project: A Case Study of the Impact of Translation on Culture, Society, Mentalities, Book Production and Circulation Abstract This article examines an interesting case study of the cultural, social, and ideological functions of translation. My discussion focuses on the most successful editorial initiative in early modern England: the metrical translation of the Book of Psalms by Thomas Sternhold and his followers. Printed in 1,000 editions from its first publication in 1562 to its last in 1828, the “Sternhold and Hopkins” metrical psalter was immensely popular; a million copies were sold by 1640. At the centre of public, personal and family devo- tion, often appended to the Geneva Bible and the Book of Common Prayer, this trans- lation had a remarkable impact not just on theology, but on literacy and on language, as well as, more broadly, on mentalities and social interactions. 1. Introduction A collection of essays on English versions of non-literary texts must of ne- cessity, I believe, include a discussion of some aspects of Bible translation. The centuries-old, crucial position of the Bible in the religious, cultural and social life of Hebrew and Christian communities is beyond question. Con- sidering the almost unmatched size of its audience, the multitude of people exposed to it in the course of personal and congregational worship, the vastness of its circulation in manuscript and print, the almost innumerable editions and translations in any language, its role in the development of vernaculars and national literatures, the biblical text is of exceptional rele- vance for studies of cultural history, literature and linguistics, book circula- tion and translation. -

Doctor of Philosophy The University of Edinburgh 2011 ABSTRACT The Book of Psalms has occupied a privileged place in Christianity from its earliest years, but it was not until the sixteenth century that metrical versifications of the Psalms became popular. Because of the notable influence of Martin Luther and John Calvin, the musical phenomenon of metrical psalm singing spread throughout Protestant circles on the European mainland and in Britain. These versifications knew no boundaries among Protestants: reformers and parishioners, kings and laypeople, men and women, young and old memorised and sang the metrical psalms. In England and Scotland, the versifications written by Thomas Sternhold and John Hopkins became the most popular, as editions of these texts were printed in England from 1549 to 1828.
