India plans $330bn renewables push by 2030

REUTERS NEW DELHI

INDIA is planning investments worth $330 billion over the next decade to power its re- newable energy dream. India wants to raise its renewable energy capacity to 500 Gigawatts (GW), or 40 per- cent of total capacity, by 2030. Renewables currently account for 22 percent of India’s total installed capacity of about 357 GW. “Additional investments in renewable plants up to year 2022 would be about $80 billion at today’s prices and an investment of around $250 billion would be required for the period 2023-2030,” according to the government’s economic survey presented to the parliament. India wants to have 175 GW of renewa- ble-based installed power capacity by 2022. The investment estimate reflects the magnitude of financial challenges facing one of the world’s most important growth mar- kets for renewable energy, with government data indicating a growth slowdown in pri- vate and capital investments in the year ended March 2019. India, which receives twice as much sunshine as European countries, wants to make solar a cornerstone of its renewable expan- sion, but also wants to make use of its cheap and abundant coal reserves, the fifth-largest in the world. The annual economic survey warned In- dia against abruptly halting coal-based utili- ties, citing risks to its banking sector and the stability of the electricity grid. “It may not be advisable to effect a sud- den abandonment of coal based power plants without complete utilization of their useful lifetimes as it would lead to stranding of as- sets that can have further adverse impact on the banking sector,” the survey said. Thermal power plants account for 80 per- cent of all industrial emissions of particulate matter, sulfur and nitrous oxides in India. India, one of the world’s largest coal pro- ducers and greenhouse gas emitters, esti- mates coal to be its energy mainstay for at least the next three decades. The country’s coal use rose 9.1 percent to nearly a billion tonnes in 2018-19. The survey said it would be difficult for a growing economy like India to migrate to renewable power supply unless ‘sufficient technological breakthrough in energy stor- age happens in the near future’.

HE decision to jointly celebrate the India-Qatar Year of Culture in 2019 was taken during the visit of the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi to Qatar in June 2016. This understanding was reflected in the joint statement issued at that time. The Embassy of India, with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, has since been organising a ‘Festival of India’ in Qatar to showcase the deep cultural roots and people-to-people links between India and Qatar. Several events have already been organised as part of this festival since the beginning of the year and more are to come in the next few months. In addition, the Indian embassy Tis also organising a number of other cultural events in partnership with various Indian community organisations to highlight the myriad dimensions of Indian culture. The embassy has partnered with Qatar Museums, Ministry of Culture and Sports, Qatar National Tourism Council, Katara Cultural Village, and a number of other relevant agencies on the Qatari side, as part of this endeavour. The ‘Year of Culture’ assumes a special significance for India, as this is also the 70th year of India’s arrival as a Republic and 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation. These celebrations indeed offer the two countries a unique opportunity of renew- ing and revitalising their special bonds of cultural heritage and help enhance the quality of their engagement at the people-to-people level. Listed below are details of various events organised till date, in chronological order, as part of the year-long celebrations, along with a summary of each event.
