The aims of this paper are to document the fauna of forensically relevant Piophilidae species worldwide and to present an updated checklist and identifi cation key to the Nearctic species, as existing keys are either outdated, too broad in geographical scope to be user-friendly, and/or contain ambiguous characters. Thirteen species are included in the checklist and key. Information on their biology, taxonomy, character variability, and distribution is provided, supplementing the extensive work of McAlpine (1977). The occurrence of colour polymorphism in wild populations of the necrophagous fly Prochyliza nigrimana (Diptera: Pio- philidae) is recorded but never treated in detail. The present paper shows that there is a seasonal distribution in the morphotypes, with the dark morphs emerging in spring and pale morphs emerging later and most abundant in summer. Furthermore, different pro- portions of each morph occur along altitudinal gradients, with dark morphs significantly more abundant at low altitudes, where mean temperatures are warmer than at high altitudes where the pale coloured morphs were more abundant. Explanations based on the adaptive value of thermal melanism are discussed. Taxonomy and Phylogeny of Piophilidae (Diptera) Sabrina Rochefort Department of Natural Resource Sciences McGill University, Montreal August 2015 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Science © Sabrina Rochefort, 2015 ABSTRACT The worldwide generic classification of Piophilidae (Diptera) is tested using a morphological and molecular phylogenetic analysis, and the Nearctic species of the family are revised. The taxonomic revision includes geographic distributions, capture notes, species descriptions and an identification key to the 43 Nearctic species. Based on the phylogenetic analysis, 20 genera are recognized in the family. Five genera are synonymized: Neopiophila McAlpine, Boreopiophila Frey and Parapiophila McAlpine with Arctopiophila Duda; Neottiophilum Frauenfeld with Mycetaulus Loew; and Stearibia Lioy with Prochyliza Walker. One new Holarctic genus, Borealicola, is described, and a second new genus, not described in this thesis, is recognized for the Australian species Protopiophila vitrea McAlpine. Four new species are described: Arctopiophila mcalpinei, A. variefrontis, Borealicola madaros, and B. skevingtoni. E-mail: [email protected] 2Current address: Department of Life Sciences, Parasites and Vectors Division, Natural History Museum, SW7 5BD London, UK Abstract With representatives distributed throughout the Holarctic and Neotropical regions, the genus Prochyliza Walker (Diptera: Piophilidae) is known from eight species. There has been, however, considerable controversy over the identity of two of them: the common, synanthropic species Prochyliza nigrimana (Meigen), and the rarely collected Prochyliza nigricornis (Meigen). The described differences between both species were only based on body colouration but, since a wide colour variation has been documented among P. nigrimana individuals, several authors had suggested that both taxa might be just extreme colour variants of the same species. Recent collections from central Spain showed that the colouration characters described for P. nigricornis certainly apply to dark P. nigrimana individuals, but also to other Prochyliza specimens show- ing distinct morphological characters and genitalia. In order to solve this controversy, the holotypes of both P. nigrimana and P. nigricornis were studied, concluding that both specimens are conspecific and instating P. -

Diptera, Syrphidae, Eristalis pertinax, seasonal polyphenism, wing venation, allometry Abstract. Eristalis pertinax varies seasonally, with the spring morph more hairy than the summer morph. We measured the size and the venation of the wings of the seasonal morphs. Wings of the spring morph were signifi cantly larger than those of the sum- mer morph and those of females were larger than those of males. There were also signifi cant differences between the morphs in wing venation and their allometric relationship. The differences between sexes were larger than differences between seasonal morphs. The allometry can account for the sexual dimorphism but not seasonal dimorphism. The differences between seasonal morphs in wing shape were relatively large with very few intermediate individuals. The differences were comparable to those be- tween two related species of Syrphidae. Genetic analyses based on markers in nuclear and mitochondrial genomes unequivocally revealed that spring and summer morphs of E. pertinax form a single population and should not be regarded as separate taxa. -
