MIDASTOUCH,trainedbyAidanO'Brien,andREWILDING,representing SaeedbinSuroor'sbanginformteam,arethetwofavorites.Itisdifficultto splitthetwoandanybody'sguesswhichonewillbeshortestinthebetting whenthestallsopen.RewildinghasnotbeenseeninactionsincetheDerbyat EpsominJune,whenhewasagame(albeitwellbeaten)thirdbehind .MidasTouchfinishedfifththatday,4lengthsbehindRewilding, buttheIrishcoltmovedmarkedlyforwardonhisnextstart;whentaking secondintheIrishDerbyatTheCurragh.LookingverymuchlikeaLeger candidate,MidasTouchcheckedinjusthalfalengthbehindstablecompanion CapeBlanco(whoransecondtointhe'KingGeorge'atAscotnext timeout).BecauseheisaG2winner,MidasTochhastogive3lbtoRewilding thistime.Thatfactorswaysthingsin'sfavor,butotherfactorsmake itsensibletogoforMidasTouch.Whereasheisbeingpointedseriouslyforthe Leger(andhasbeenselectedfromanumberofBallydoyletrainees),Rewilding isacoltcionnectionsfeelwillcomeintohiswonnextyear.Comingoffalong breakheisunlikelytobeatthetopofhisgamethisweek.Thatmayslsobethe casewithMidasTouchbutheismorelikelytobesharp.Botharepotential improvers.IamgoingforMidasTouch.HemadeCapeBlancoworkhardfor hisDerbywinin,andifhecontinuestheprogresswehaveseenstepby stepsincehisseasonaldebut,well,thenthissonofwillprovehardto beat.

TOTALCOMMAND,trainedbySirMichaelStouteforKhalidAbdullah, looksthebestlongshot.Thisisabig,strappingcoltwhohasneededtime,and hewillimprove–that'sforsure.HeisanotherwhomaydevelopintoG1 calibrenextseasonbuttheLegerisverymuchontheagendaforthissonof Sadler'sWellsand1,000GuineasherioneWince.Hemadewhatlookeda winningmoveafurlongoutinthe2-mileQueen'sVaseatRoyalAscotinJune, butfailedtostaythedistanceandfadedintothirdplace.Thisdistancewillsuit TotalCommandbetterand,ataround10-1,heiswellworthasmallwager.At Ascot,hehadahorsecalledCorsicaalmosttwolengthsbehind,andthatcolt wentontowinaListedraceatNewmarket;beatingHARRISTWEEDby¾ length.ThisformlineindicatesthatHarrisTweed,trainedbyLesterPiggott's son-in-lawHaggas,isupagainstithere.Onpureformheis,thoughI amnotsosureweshouldwritethisfastimprovingrunneroff–eveninthis company.HewasenteredforthevaluableSwedishDerby(wherehewould havebeen1/5)andalsofortheEborHandicap(wherehedidnotgetin)and thatconnectionstakethisroutreallyisinteresting.Theplanistogivehimone morerunafterthis,thenwraphimupfor2011.He'saveryclassylooking individual,andabitofgiveunderfootwillsuithim.

BYWORDandTWICEOVER,thepairwhofilledfirstandsecondinthe prestigiousPrinceOfWales'sStakesatRoyalAscot,aresettomeetagain– bothcarryingthesilksoftheracesponsors.Byword,aprogressivecolttrained inbyAndreFabre,gotfirstrunonTwiceOveratAscot,wherethe latterwasshortofroomatacrucialstage.TwiceOverhassincefrankedthe formbyhimselfwinningtheStakesatSandownPark,butonlyjustand afterhavingahardrace.ToassumethatTwiceOvercanturnthetableson Bywordmaymeamistake,notleastsincetheFrenchrunnerhassomuchmore scopeforimprovement.Afterascot,histrainersaidthathewoulddrophim backtoamile,andnotmapoutaplanleadingtothe'Arc'over1½miles.A fewweeksago,Fabre–arguablyoneofthebesttrainersintheworld–hada changeofheart,andhereweare;withBywordrunningintheInternational,asa prepfortheArc.IwentforhiminthePrinceOfWales,whereUKbookmakers offeredacrazy4-1aboutByword,andIseenoreasontodeserthimnow.He goesonanyground,hisformisrocksolidandhecanimproveagain.USracing fansshouldnotehisnamewhateverhappensoverthenextsixweeks,as Bywordisjustthesorttobesentacrossthepondlateron.He'sanidealhorse fortheBreeders'CupTurf.

RIPVANWINKLE,oneofthebestthree-year-oldsoflastyearand oneofthefewwhocouldgivethemightySeaTheStarsafight,may beabiggerdangerthanTwiceOver.Steadilyregaininghisform,Aidan O'Brien'sstarwaslastseenintheSussexStakesatGoodwood,wherehewas runner-uptoCanfordCliffs.ThatwasmarkedimprovementonRipVan Winkle'sformatRoyalAscot,wherehemadehisseasonaldebut(!)inthe QueenAnneStakesandfinishedsixthbehind(tiredlateafterearly speed).RipVanWinkleismuchbetterthanthatshowing.Hesimplyoutclassed PacoBoyintheSussexlastsummerandwasalsoquitecloseupbehindSea TheStarsbothintheDerbyandtheEclipseStakes.Although'Rip'hasbeen brilliantoveramile,thereisreasontobelievethatheisjustaseffectiveovera mileandaquarter,andhemusthavetopchanceatYork.

DICKTURPIN,athree-year-oldtrainedbyRichardHannon,hasbeen supplementedatthecostof£50,000,andheisaninterestingcontender–ashe hasshownhimselftobeoneofthebestmilersinhisagegroup.Staminawill havetobetakenontrust,however,andanyrainwouldnotbeinhisfavor.Dick TurpinisasonofArakan,andhispedigreedoesnotaugurwellforthisstepup indistance.Thatsaid,hecerianlywasn'tstoppingattheendoftheone-mile PrixJeanPrat(G1)atChantillyinJuly,whenhepoweredhomby4easy lengthsfromSiyouni(aG1winnerlastyearbutnotquiteasgoodthisseason).
