Over forty of our “A” players participated in this two day event. After the first day of play, 2013 Match Play Champion, Ellen Oswald was in first place with a 2 under 71, but 2013 Met Amateur Champion, Scotland Preston was close behind with a score of 73. Paired together in the final round, Oswald and Preston stayed even with each other throughout the day and both ended with a 3 over 76. This gave Preston a two day total of 149 (+3) and gave Oswald the Low Gross honors with a total of 147 (+1). This is Oswald’s first time winning the Stroke Play Championship, after finishing as a runner-up to Phoebe Timpson in 2012. Finishing on top of the leader board at this event gave Oswald 400 Player of the Year points, and helped her clinch the award for the 2013 season. This is only the seventh time in WMGA history that the same woman has won both the Match Play Championship and the Stroke Play Championship in the same year. The last year this was achieved was in 2002 by Sherry Herman. In the Net competition, Liliana Ruiz-Munoz took home the trophy with a 73-72 = 145 (-1) and Stroke Play Champion, Stroke Play Low Net Winner, Cheryl Brayman was a close second with a 147 (+1) total. Ellen Oswald Liliana Ruiz-Munoz First Time Champions at the Seniors’ A & B Congratulations to the Champions of the Seniors’ “A” and Seniors’ ”B” Championship, both held at Round Hill Club in Greenwich, Connecticut. In the 9-hole division, Cc Kaplan not only took home the Low Gross prize with a 59, but also learned the ropes of tournament golf from board member and volunteer, Dede Brooks, who was her mentor and marker for the day. In the 18-hole division, we had a very talented field which included past WMGA Champions, Junior Inter-City team members, and top players from other junior organizations in the area. At the end of the round, we had six players shoot in the 70’s and two tied at the top with 76. Emily Corrigan and Alessandra Ricigliano went back out on the course to partici- pate in a playoff for the Championship trophy. The two friends approached the situation with smiles on their faces, and after the first playoff hole, Emily Corrigan came out victorious, claiming the title of Champion. Tatiana Reali took home the Low Net honors. Not only was there a good showing of golf at this event, but the camaraderie and friendships that are apparent among the girls is heart-warming to see. The WMGA looks forward to seeing more great Low Net Winner, 9 Hole Champion, Cc Kaplan things from these girls next summer! • Of Irvington, New York, 1849,1860 by Rohit T
The Hudson River Railroad and the Development of Irvington, New York, 1849,1860 By Rohit T. Aggarwala Introduction Close by Sunnyside is one of those marvelous villages with which America abounds: it has sprung up like a mushroom, and bears the name Irvington, in compliment to the late master of Sunnyside. A dozen years ago, not a solitary house was there .... Piermont, directly oppos ite, was then the sole terminus of the great New York and Erie Railway, and here seemed to be an eligible place for a village, as the Hudson River Railway was then almost completed. Mr. Dearman had one surveyed upon his lands; streets were marked out, village lots were measured and defined; sales at enormous prices, which enriched the owner, were made, and now upon that farm, in pleas ant cottages, surrounded by neat gard ens, several hundred inhabi tants are dwelling .... Morning and evening, when the trains depart for and arrive from New York, many handsome vehicles can be seen there. This all seems like the work of magic. O ver this beautiful slope, where so few years ago the voyager upon the Hudson saw only woodlands and cultivated fields, is now a populous town. The own ers are chiefl y business in [sic] of N ew York, whose counting rooms and parlours are within less than an hour of each other. - Benson J. Lossing, The Hudson, 18661 Tht Hudson River Rail road and the Development of Irvington, New York, 1849- 1860 51 Irvington, New York, was created by the coming of the Hudson River Railroad.

  • FORMER 50Th PRECINCT POLICE STATION HOUSE, (Originally the 40Th Precinct Police Station House), 3101 Kingsbridge Terrace, Borough of the Bronx
Landmarks Preservation Commission July 15, 1986; Designation List 185 LP-1285 FORMER 50th PRECINCT POLICE STATION HOUSE, (originally the 40th Precinct Police Station House), 3101 Kingsbridge Terrace, Borough of the Bronx. Built 1901-1902; architects Arthur J. Horgan and Vincent J. Slattery. Landmark Site: Borough of the Bronx Tax Map Block 3257, Lot 111. On April 13, 1982, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the former 50th Precinct Police Station House, and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 9). The hearing was continued to June 8, 1982 (Item No. 10). Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Three witnesses spoke in favor of designation. No witnesses spoke in opposition to designation. Letters have been received in favor of designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS Designed in 1900, and built from 1901 to 1902 by the New York architects Arthur J. Horgan and Vincent J. Slattery, the former 50th Precinct Police Station House is prominently sited at the intersection of Kingsbridge Terrace and Summit Place. Its style, scale, materials of construction, direct relation to the street, and ornament contribute to the monumental character, which distinguished the building from the surrounding b-Kl- and three-story frame structures of rapidly expanding Kingsbridge. A symbol of the authority of the police force and of the presence of municipal government in early 20th century Kingsbridge, and an exemplar of Beaux-Arts principles of composition, the building should be seen within the context of the City Beautiful Movement.1 Historical interest in the building further derives from its being among the best surviving works of an architectural firm that was very much in the public eye at the tum-of-the century.
