While the hegemonic ideology surrounding sport is that it brings different people together and ameliorates social boundaries, sociologists of sport have shown this to be a gross simplification. Instead, sport is often seen to reinforce and recreate social stereotypes and boundaries, especially as it regards race and the black athlete in body and culture. At best we can think of sport as a contested terrain for both maintaining and challenging racial norms and boundaries. The mediated black athlete has thus always, for better or worse, impacted popular white perceptions of blackness broadly and globally. While much work has been done to expose the workings of race and racism in sport, studies have tended to homogenize black populations and have not taken into account the varying histories and complexities of, specifically, black African migrant athletes.

  • Written Evidence Submitted by Netflix
Written evidence submitted by Netflix Submission to Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee inquiry The future of Public Service Broadcasting June 2020 Netflix in the UK 1. Netflix is a streaming subscription video on demand (SVoD) service that allows customers to watch a wide variety of TV shows, films, documentaries, and more over the internet and ad-free on any one of thousands of internet-connected devices at a time and place of their choice. We are a global service, offered in 190 countries with close to 180 million subscribers, of whom over 12 million are in the UK. 2. The UK is one of Netflix’s top three locations for production globally, along with the U.S. and Canada. In 2019 we invested over £400m1 here in local content, with over 50 different shows in production including co-productions with the public service broadcasters and in total over £500m in UK production - a third of all our production in Europe. We expect our investment here to continue growing; our long-term commitment to the UK creative community and our intention to increase our investment in production is also reflected in our announcement last year that we are creating a dedicated production hub in the UK, based at Shepperton Studios.2 3. Localised content is increasingly a priority for our business, both in the UK and around the world. Since 2019 we have appointed several UK-based commissioners overseeing scripted and unscripted content, including drama, comedy, factual, and kids and family - all of whom built their careers in the UK film and TV industry, including with the PSBs.

  • Football Fandom in England: Old Traditions and New Tendencies
International Quarterly of Sport Science 2009/2 FOOTBALL FANDOM IN ENGLAND: OLD TRADITIONS AND NEW TENDENCIES Tamás Dóczi, András Kálmán Tóth Semmelweis University, Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences, Budapest [email protected] Abstract In the past two decades, globalization has brought about major changes in the world of football, which is perhaps the most globalized area of not only sport, but of culture as well. The case of British football is a unique one, as the country can be regarded as a pioneer in the introduction of modern football, but also a prominent engine of the current globalizing process. The objective of the current article is to explore the attitudes and opinions of English football supporters, mainly focusing on the question how the general patterns of fandom, match-going and supporting have changed as a result of the transformation of English football after the Taylor Report. In order to have a better, more in-depth understanding, a qualitative approach was taken, and the authors carried out semi- structured, in-depth interviews with football supporters (N=9) living in Plymouth, Devon. The results show that the way traditional, middle-class supporters follow their favourite club is changing, even though the actual at-match habits show remarkable similarities, which reflects a strong football culture in England. The fans interviewed seem to be slightly put off by the high cost of going to matches, and the general disappointment about the change in the atmosphere since the emergence of all-seater stadia also takes its toll. Although the participants, being members of the middle class, are often referred to as the new target audience of the clubs, it is becoming more and more difficult for them to finance their supporting, which may result in a decrease of their enthusiasm.
