All rights reserved. Administrative History: The president's office was created in 1906. The search for a new president began with Kern Alexander's resignation announcement on April 11, 1988. The Board of Regents elected Thomas Meredith as president August 5 and installed September 21, 1988. Under Meredith's leadership, the campus expanded with the purchase of the Bowling Green Center, creation the Institute of Economic Development and the implementation of the first strategic plan Western XXI. He also hired WKU's first female vice president, Barbara Burch. Meredith had served the university for a little over eight years when he announced his resignation February 5, 1997. Thomas Carter Meredith was born in Owensboro December 7, 1941. He obtained his BS from Kentucky Wesleyan in 1963, his MS from WKU in 1966 and his PhD from the University of Mississippi in 1971. His early career was spent teaching high school in Owensboro, Kentucky and LaHarpe, Illinois. From there he moved into administrative positions in Jeffersonville, Indiana and the board of trustees of the State Institutions of Higher Learning in Mississippi. Meredith was vice chancellor for executive affairs at the University of Mississippi when he came to WKU in 1988. At minimum I hope that my thoughts on the direction of the Graduate School may prove helpful to the search committee and the new Dean, whomever that may be. To begin, there are three important attributes that I believe I can bring to this role. I share them here, because they clearly drive my comments on the envisioning committee’s specific recommendations. - I am most passionate about student success, and I firmly believe student success represents a singular goal that we can tie all our other goals and metrics into. - I am unable to settle for anything but operational excellence in day-to-day activities, and believe that you cannot sustainably advance the boundaries of academia without operational strength. - I am applying to this role with significant leadership experience, including connecting to both leadership on campus and with government, community, and industry leaders. I will now comment on my general approach to this role and the envisioning committee’s recommendations.     N ATIONAL SPORTS LAW INSTITUTE OF M ARQUETTE UNIVERSITY LAW SCHOOL Sports Law Alumni News Volume 3, Issue 2 Fall 2004 Inaugural Fall Sports Law Golf Classic a Success On Saturday, September 25th, 2004, the Marquette University Law School Sports Law Society and the Sports Law Alumni Association hosted the Inaugural Fall Sports Law Golf Classic, at Scenic View Country Club in Slinger, Wisconsin. 103 total golfers participated in the outing, the highest number we have ever had at a golf outing. 74 of these participants were students, while 19 were alums, both highs as well. Each of the 74 student golfers was able to golf at a cost $13 less than actual cost of the event. A total of four players were taken tying the school-record of most selections in a draft with the 1992 and 2008 squads. Brett Netzer became the fourth-highest selection in program history going in the third round to Boston while Colton Laws (7th round-Toronto) and T.J. Nichting (9th round- Baltimore) completed the top-10 selections. Zach Jarrett became the fourth selection going in the 28th round to Baltimore. A year later in 2018, Josh Maciejewski (10th-New York Yankees) and Reece Hampton (12th-Detroit) made it six draftees in two years while Harris Yett also went to Baltimore in 2019. • Charlotte set a new school-record with a .971 fielding percentage in 2016 and immediately followed that season with a .978 showing to re-set the benchmark for best fielding team in the program's history. Both seasons led Conference USA. • The Metro Conference Tournament Championship and trip to the NCAA Tournament in 1993.
