PERFORMANCE COATINGS THERMOPLASTICS & THERMOSETS DISPERSANTS PRODUCT GUIDE FOR PLASTICS HYPERDISPERSANTS FOR THERMOPLASTICS AND THERMOSETS Solplus™ and Solsperse™ hyperdispersants and coupling agents have been developed to meet the needs of the plastic industry, for both thermoplastic and thermoset polymers, as well as polyurethanes. THERMOPLASTIC MASTERBATCH AND COMPOUNDING Solplus™ DP310 hyperdispersant is recommended for the dispersion of organic and inorganic pigments and fillers in thermoplastic masterbatch and compound applications. It can be used in a variety of thermoplastic polymers including polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, ABS and PVC. MORE EFFICIENT DISPERSION Increased Higher Increased Less filter Upgraded productivity pigment/filler color blockage/ performance loadings strength fiber breakage of lower cost systems COST SAVINGS IMPROVED QUALITY Stronger, Less Improved Improved Improved Meets new brighter specks mechanical stability flame environmental colors properties retardancy standards 2 PLASTICIZER AND POLYOL DISPERSIONS The recommended Solplus™ hyperdispersant for the production of plasticizer and polyol dispersions is dependent upon the pigment: Solplus™ K500 Inorganic pigments and fillers Solplus™ DP700 Inorganic pigment fillers and carbon black Solplus™ K200 Organic pigment (phthalate free dispersions) Solplus™ K210 Organic pigments (phthalate based dispersions) Solplus™ R700 Organic pigments THERMOSET/COMPOSITE APPLICATIONS (polyether polyols) Solplus™ R710 Organic pigments Engineered specifically for composite fillers (polyether polyols) and resins—and based on proprietary polymer chemistry—Solplus™ additives offer major process advantages to the thermoset industry, including the combination of dispersing/wetting and anti-settling BENEFITS benefits in a single additive. In both phthalate and non-phthalate plasticizer From being 100% active and solvent free, systems and in polyether and polyester polyols for Solplus™ hyperdispersants also help to reduce conversion to polyurethanes, Solplus hyperdispersants environmental impact from the styrene content improve dispersion of: levels that characterize most unsaturated • Organic and inorganic pigments polyester based systems. • Fillers Solplus™ dispersants have been developed to • Flame retardants improve dispersion of fillers, flame retardants and • Stabilizers reinforcements (fibers) in thermoset systems, as well • Blowing agents as for organic and inorganic pigments in gel coats. As a result, manufacturers achieve: • Higher solids loadings/increased BENEFITS pigment concentration • Higher filler/flame retardant loadings • Reduced viscosities (more Newtonian rheology) • Decreased viscosities • Improved color strength development • Anti-settling • Better dispersion of color in • Improved stability finished polymer • Improved color to white compatibility • Cost reductions • Improved processing (increased productivity and fewer passes on the mill) 3 HYPERDISPERSANTS AND COUPLING AGENTS FOR THERMOPLASTICS AND THERMOSETS INFLUENCE OF MEDIA COMPATIBILITY ON PRODUCT SELECTION For a Solsperse™ or Solplus™ hyperdispersant to be effective in specific applications, it must be compatible with the media in which the solid is being dispersed AND have an affinity with the surface of the material itself. These are the main criteria used in product selection. The main grades offered for a range of plastics applications are mapped out below: Unsaturated Polyesters and Gel Coats Heat Masterbatch and Compound Ambient ES F100* Engineering Plastics IT S TH PO E R M M O F100* R700 /C O S P T R710 L E DP310 A S S PVC Acrylic T O I D545 DP310 C M F100* S R D540 E D570 H D542 T D520 DP310 Liquid Colors DP700 Epoxy F100* D540 for Plastics K240/K241 D510 K251 D560 D610 D570 organic pigment inorganics and fillers K500 R720 K500 DP700 K210 P D580 Polyester L Phthalate Polyol R710 A Based K220 S T I C I Z E S R L O K200 D Y I L R700 S P O E P R S I O N S Polyether Non-Phthalate Polyol *Solplus™ F100 is an air-release agent that is designed for rapid air-release and effective wetting in thermoset systems. With certain organic pigment dispersions it may be advantageous to include the use of a Solsperse™ synergist in combination with the polymeric Solplus™ or Solsperse™ hyperdispersant. 4 FORMULATING GUIDELINES DOSAGE – PLASTIC APPLICATIONS MASTERBATCH/COMPOUND METHOD OF USE/ORDER OF ADDITION – PLASTIC APPLICATIONS To determine the optimum dosage for masterbatch or compound applications, a “ladder series” MASTERBATCH/COMPOUND should be carried out. 1.
