Beaver Island has extensive wetlands. The shoreline from Empire to the Straits of Mackinac contains few wetlands. The Upper Peninsula shoreline of Lake Michigan is com­ posed of rocky points and headlands with sandy or marshy bay heads - Isle Royale National Par1< (Herdendorf and others, 1981 ). Along the Lake Superior shoreline of Michigan, wetlands are most common along the Keweenaw Bay waterway and at tributary mouths in Marquette and Chippewa Counties. The Isle Royale shore­ line and islands and the mainland shores of the St. Marys River contain wetlands (Herdendorf and others, 198 I ).     CHAPTER 3 CURRENT CONDITIONS This chapter presents information on the characteristics of land, natural features and buildings in Glen Arbor Township. It is based in part on the General Characteristics section in the 1984 Plan, but contains updates and additional information. Land Overview Glen Arbor Township consists of a total area of land and inland lakes, rivers and streams of approximately 39 square miles (22,607 acres). Of this, South Manitou Island is 5,286 acres and rests about 6 miles from the closest mainland point and for most people is accessed by ferry from Leland. The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore accounts for 75 percent of the area, (and includes South Manitou Island) and Big and Little Glen Lakes another 17 percent. The privately owned land area of the Township amounts to only about 3,800 acres (almost six square miles). The characteristics that are most representative of the Township include the waterfronts of Glen Lake and Lake Michigan, the Sleeping Bear Dunes, the Crystal River, high hills and steep hillsides and the extensive tree vegetation. These natural features have influenced the major land use patterns in the Township. Residential development is most evident around the Glen Lakes, Fisher Lakes, Lake Michigan, and on high hills, while Glen Arbor village, the Homestead and the Leelanau School are the only concentrations of development. As elsewhere, residential development is attracted to the waterfront for the visual beauty, recreation and serenity associated with it. This watershed drains approximately 46 square miles of land or 29,721 acres (U'Ren et al. 2009). Within this watershed there are five distinct basins; Little Glen Lake (1,450 acres),Glen Lake (4,865 acres), Big Fisher Lake (42 acres), Little Fisher Lake, and Tucker Lake (15 acres) (Figure 1). For the purpose of this report, Big Fisher and Little Fisher Lakes will be collectively referred to as Fisher Lake. Additionally there are two small ponds in the watershed, Day Mill Pond and Brooks Lake. Day Mill Pond (7 acres) is located on the northwestern shore of Little Glen Lake and drains into the lake through a small stream, while Brooks Lake (10 acres) flows in through a small creek on the eastern shore of Glen Lake. The primary inlet to the Glen Lake system is Hatlem Creek, which flows into the southern end of Glen Lake near the intersection of County Roads 616 and 675. The primary outlet to the Glen Lake system is the Crystal River, which discharges into Sleeping Bear Bay on Lake Michigan. Little Glen Lake and Hatlem Creek both drain into Glen Lake, which itself drains into Big Fisher Lake then Little Fisher Lake before finally flowing into the Crystal River.
