Everything about this project was designed specially by the original Parappa artist, Rodney A Greenblat. Currently in the design stage is a Sean Lennon model Vinyl Killer – Sean was already a fan of Vacuum, and while touring Japan in ‘99 he met with representatives of the company backstage where he himself put the proposal to them. More recently Fukushima visited Sean at his home in New York to discuss concepts for this new model which will possibly be available for a summer release and there are plans for future models currently in the discussion process. Scott Amendola: Drummer/Composer/Bandleader/Educator “Amendola’s music is consistently engaging, both emotionally and intellectually, the product of a fertile and inventive musical imagination.” Los Angeles Times “If Scott Amendola didn't exist, the San Francisco music scene would have to invent him.” Derk Richardson, San Francisco Bay Guardian “Amendola has complete mastery of every piece of his drumset and the ability to create a plethora of sounds using sticks, brushes, mallets, and even his hands.”Steven Raphael, Modern Drummer “...drummer/signal-treater Scott Amendola is both a tyrant of heavy rhythm and an electric-haired antenna for outworldly messages (not a standard combination).” Greg Burk, LA Weekly For Scott Amendola, the drum kit isn’t so much an instrument as a musical portal. As an ambitious composer, savvy bandleader, electronics explorer, first-call accompanist and capaciously creative foil for some of the world’s most inventive musicians, Amendola applies his wide-ranging rhythmic virtuosity to a vast array of settings. His closest musical associates include guitarists Nels Cline, Jeff Parker, Charlie Hunter, Hammond B-3 organist Wil Blades, violinists Jenny Scheinman and Regina Carter, saxophonists Larry Ochs and Phillip Greenlief, and clarinetist Ben Goldberg, players who have each forged a singular path within and beyond the realm of jazz. While rooted in the San Francisco Bay Area scene, Amendola has woven a dense and far-reaching web of bandstand relationships that tie him to influential artists in jazz, blues, rock and new music. A potent creative catalyst, the Berkeley-based drummer is the nexus for a disparate community of musicians stretching from Los Angeles and Seattle to Chicago and New York.

  • The Boston Globe
Celestial happening By Andrew Gilbert Globe Correspondent / February 25, 2011 The Celestial Septet isn’t so much an all-star ensemble as a brilliant constellation uniting the Rova Saxophone Quartet and the Nels Cline Singers, two singular West Coast bands dedicated to exploring the near and far reaches of the sonic universe. The septet performs tonight at the ICA as part of a brief five-city tour marking the group’s first foray since recording a stellar eponymous CD in 2008, released last year on New World Records. The combination of the Singers, a volatile vocal-less trio with drummer Scott Amendola and bassist Trevor Dunn, and Rova, a rigorously inventive combo in its fourth decade of investigating what trombonist George Lewis calls “the hyphenated space between improvisation and composition,’’ nudges both groups into a new orbit. “Working with the Singers makes Rova play a little differently,’’ says Cline, 55. “They’ve been playing together for so long, it can be a little daunting to sit and watch them do their machinations. They’ve got this detailed system of hand cues to signal each other and change directions. We add a whole bunch of new options.’’ While Cline is best known these days as Wilco’s lead guitarist, he spent decades as a revered underground figure on the Southern California scene who zigzagged giddily across stylistic frontiers. An incisive, often lyrical improviser who has collaborated with jazz searchers like Charlie Haden, Vinny Golia, and Wadada Leo Smith, Cline is also in his element shredding with bassist Mike Watt (of Minutemen and fIREHOSE fame), or rocking out with former Jane’s Addiction drummer Steve Perkins.

While rock musicians have attempted to come to terms with this phenomenon by either performing a ‘Romantic’ sense of authenticity (basically by importing folk values to the production process) or ‘Modernist authenticity’ (by highlighting experimen- tation and alienation), Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, creators of Gorillaz, found a third way which ingeniously allows them to do both. By creating a virtual rock band, and by hiding their own media personalities behind those of their virtual alter egos, they brought themselves into a position which allows them to produce ‘sincere’ popular music which ‘playfully’ stages the absurdities of major label music business while very successfully operating within its very confines.

Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Neil Finn--Once Removed by Neil Finn Crowded House – “Don’t Dream It’s Over” It starts with that magical guitar riff, so unmistakable that it takes us back to the Fab Four days of the sixties—but no it’s not The Beatles but New Zealand’s Crowded House; Unbeknownst to Neil Finn who penned this already tender classic— “Don’t Dream It’s Over,” to my ears, is a modern day, 1980’s reimagining of John Lennon’s “A Day in the Life.” When asked about his Beatles influence Finn replied, “ Not directly, although I’m sure he’s in there somewhere – he’s always in my thoughts. My songs never have clear narratives. I describe moments, work in some feelings and hope for empathy. Growing up, that was my appreciation of music. When I first heard John Lennon singing Help! I thought he sounded really happy; I didn’t know he was seriously in trouble. To me, a good song is about intent, delivery and little resonances. I’m not interested in an intellectual process .” When talking about his craft, Neil Finn said this about songwriting, “I t’s like working with clay. You’ve just got to mould the words until they fit the type of rhythm and meter of the song really well. That’s where the craft comes in .” Neil delved further inside his gift of song when he told writer Graham Reid, “ I like to incorporate different events into the one thing, the formula of truth and reality and in-between is different for every song, but there’s always an element of all three.

DRAFT – PLEASE DO NOT QUOTE OR CITE [What follows are excerpts (including one full chapter, Chapter 5) from the forthcoming book, Creative License: Digital Sampling and the Law by Kembrew McLeod and Peter DiCola, with Jenny Toomey and Kristin Thomson (Duke University Press).] INTRODUCTION “A lot of people look at hip-hop sampling as doing what be-boppers did—taking standards of the day and putting a new melody on top of it.” - Greg Tate Digital sampling is a musical technique that incorporates a portion of a previously existing sound recording into new music.1 As De La Soul’s Pasemaster Mase tells us, sampling is “taking sounds and meshing them together and putting them all in time, to come up with something totally different.” During the 1970s, hip-hop DJs used the turntable as an instrument that could manipulate sounds—transforming the record player from a technology of consumption to one of musical production. And in the 1980s, hip-hop artists built on these turntable techniques by using digital samplers to construct single songs out of dozens of sampled sound sources. “We’d grab a conga sound,” says Mix Master Mike, a member of the Beastie Boys and the DJ crew Invisibl Skratch Piklz. “We grabbed trumpet sounds, violin sounds, drumbeat sounds, and re-manipulated them and created our own music.” Sampling can be done by using a variety of media and methods, including: cutting up magnetic audiotape on analog equipment; physically manipulating vinyl records on a turntable; and using digital technologies like computers or drum machines. While the term “digital sampling” refers only to the latter method, many people nevertheless use “sampling” more generally as a stand-in for sound collage, in all its forms.
