It is at a distance of 35 Kms by Road from Kottayam Town. It can be reached from Kottayam via Manjackalppady- Vellachiravayal Road. The Infrastructure Plan vide Plate No. 8. Topography: The Permit is located on the slope of the hillock gently dipping towards North. The highest elevation in this area is 89.4m from MSL and the lowest elevation is 48.0m from MSL. Brief Description of the Project: Geology: Regional Geology: This area shows a very interesting correspondence between the major rock classes and their physiographic expression. The east comprises Precambrian metamorphic rocks and forms hilly ground. The central part is a low plateau, where Tertiary sediments containing lignite occur. These are followed by further west by a low plain, which is underlain by Quaternary Formations, fluvial or partly marine. The Charnockite Group dominates in area distribution with charnockite, charnockite gneiss and diopside gneiss occupying the major part. Pyroxenen granulite (with hornblende granulite), magnetitie quartzite and cordierite gneiss occur as concordant bands within charnockite. The linear bands of quartzite (Khondalite Group) are the oldest rock of the area. Biotitegeniss (composite gneiss) representing the Migmatite Complex has a limited areal extent, west of Ettumanur and along the eastern boundary. Three major granite bodies are emplaced in the district, two along the southwest and other in the east. Numerous dolerite and gabbro dykes trending NW-SE traverse the older basement rocks in the central and eastern parts. A prominent gabbro dyke extends from north to south with a NNW-SSE trend. Tertiary sediments comprising sandstone, clay with lignite intercalations are confined to the west and they occur as small patches, especially as capping on hillocks. Both the Archaean and Tertiary rocks are lateritised. Quaternary alluvial deposits occur to the west. They have been classified into various morphostrati graphic units, based on their environment of formation, as Guruvayur Formation (palaeo-marine), Periyar Formation (fluvial) and Viyyam Formation (fluvio-marine). Local Geology: The building stone granite are very well exposed in the old working pit, whereas part of area with lower elevation is covered by top soil of about 0 to 1.0m thickness. A Geological Plan showing the granite and soil cover are shown in surface geological plan & sections prepared on 1:1000 scale and enclosed vide Plate No 4 (Mining Plan). ..2 Granite Building Stone Quarry of Mr. Joyce Sebastian Pre-feasibility Report Table 01: Local Geology Soil Cover 0 to 1.0m Granite 40m (min. estimate) Table No: 1.1: The Geological Resources Tonnage (T) Section No Area (m2) Influence (m) Volume (m3) UNFC BD 2.5T/m3 A-A' 2484 53.5 132,910 332,275 332 B-B' 671 50 33,530 83,825 332 C-C' 502 63.5 31,877 79,693 332 Total 198,317 495,793 332 Table No 1.2: Granite Building Stone Mineable Reserves Section Bench Level Area (m2) Influence Volume (m3) Tonnage (T) UNFC No (m) BD 2.5T/m3 70 32 46 1,472 3,680 122 65 178 46 8,188 20,470 122 60 211 46 9,706 24,265 122 A-A' 55 262 46 12,052 30,130 122 50 248 46 11,408 28,520 122 45 203 46 9,338 23,345 122 Sub Total 52,164 130,410 122 70 157 50 7,850 19,625 122 B-B' 65 130 50 6,500 16,250 122 60 69 50 3,450 8,625 122 Sub Total 17,800 44,500 122 85 64 56 3,584 8,960 122 C-C' 80 130 56 7,280 18,200 122 75 91 56 5,096 12,740 122 Sub Total 15,960 39,900 122 Grand Total 85,924 214,810 122 Mining: The Mining is proposed to be operated by developing benches of 5m height and 5m ultimate width by Opencast Semi-Mechanized Mining Method. Irrigation Department Government of Kerala PERFORMANCE PROGRESSION POLICIES Irrigation Design and Research Board November 2020 PREFACE Water is a prime natural resource, a basic human need without which life cannot sustain. With the advancement of economic development and the rapid growth of population, water, once regarded as abundant in Kerala is becoming more and more a scarce economic commodity. Kerala has 44 rivers out of which none are classified as major rivers. Only four are classified as medium rivers. All these rivers are rain-fed (unlike the rivers in North India that originate in the glaciers) clearly indicating that the State is entirely dependent on monsoon. Fortunately, Kerala receives two monsoons – one from the South West and other from the North East distributed between June and December. Two-thirds of the rainfall occurs during South West monsoon from June to September. Though the State is blessed with numerous lakes, ponds and brackish waters, the water scenario remains paradoxical with Kerala being a water –stressed State with poor water availability per capita. The recent landslides and devastating floods faced by Kerala emphasize the need to rebuild the state infrastructure ensuring climate resilience and better living standards. The path to be followed to achieve this goal might need change in institutional mechanisms in various sectors as well as updation in technology. Irrigation Design and Research Board with its functional areas as Design, Dam Safety, Hydrology, Investigation etc., plays a prominent role in the management of Water Resources in the State. The development of reliable and efficient Flood Forecasting and Early Warning System integrated with Reservoir Operations, access to real time hydro-meteorological and reservoir data and its processing, etc.
