This Council was formed through the leadership of Dr. Ken Weathersby, Vice President for Convention Advancement, SBC Executive Committee. CMA: Gold Certified 50 Years of Advancing Country n 1952, WSM-AM/Nashville inaugurated an annual convention CMA’s original Board of Directors in 1959: (seated) Steve Sholes, Chairman Wesley weekend honoring Country radio disc jockeys for playing Grand Rose, President Connie B. Gay, Dee Kilpatrick, Cindy Walker, Pee Wee King, Cracker Ole Opry stars. That event spawned the Country Disc Jockey Jim Brooker; (standing) Len Ellis, Joe Lucas, Paul Ackerman, Ken Nelson, Don Pierce, J. William Denny, Mac Wiseman and Harold Moon Association. But by the mid-’50s, the exploding popularity of rock ‘n’ roll led to Top 40 rapidly displacing many full-time Country corporate marketers. Billy Walker
Billy Walker Walker, Billy: William Marion Walker, guitar player and singer, was born on January 14, 1929, in Ralls, Texas, a ranching community located thirty miles east of Lubbock. As a child, Walker was inspired to become a musician after hearing fellow Texan Gene Autry play. In 1942, Walker’s family moved to Clovis, New Mexico, where, in 1944, the fifteen-year-old won a musical contest, earning him an opportunity to play on a local radio station. Eventually, Walker became a regular host on KICA radio and remained with the station until his graduation from high school in 1946. At that point, he formed a country band that toured throughout the Southwest. Walker soon caught the attention of promoters in Dallas who asked him to appear on the popular Big “D” Jamboree radio program in 1949. Upon joining the Big “D” Jamboree, Walker was given the stage name “The Traveling Texan.” The show’s promoters also created a fictional identity for Walker as a mysterious crooner who wore a mask, similar to the Lone Ranger, as a way to keep his identity hidden from his wealthy parents. This fictional stage character proved popular with audiences, and Walker kept it as part of his performance during the early years of his career. Ironically, he was eventually unmasked after a passerby mistakenly thought that Walker was a bank robber and called the police. Early on in his career, Walker befriended Hank Williams. The two became business associates in the early 1950s, selling what they advertised as a “healing tonic,” which Walker later admitted derived its “curative” powers primarily from alcohol. -

The History of Radio in Emanuel County Part I – WJAT Radio, 1950 thru 1975, Also the entertainment activities of the Nancy Auditorium By Rick Paul Swainsboro, Georgia has a rather unique radio history. From its humble beginnings, we were dazzled and entertained by events that only a short time earlier would have seemed unimaginable. The history of WJAT radio, while interesting enough, really cannot be told completely without including the entertainment activities of the Nancy Auditorium. What a thrill it must have been as citizens witnessed our sleepy little town transform from an obscure logging and farming hamlet into one of the five most significant country music venues in the country. Even more exciting, and maybe a little scary for some, when you consider that country music was still new and rock and roll unheard of. Truly amazing! I began collecting information for this piece in the 60s while hanging around the radio station as a typical teenager, fascinated by juicy stories being told about the radio station and its people. Later, after actually becoming an employee and hearing even spicier pieces of station lore, it dawned on me that someone should write this stuff down. Well, here we are all these years later, and alas, not much has been written about WJAT Radio or the events at the Nancy Auditorium. Recently, I felt the time had finally come to put down on paper some of the things I had learned over the years. And so I began, intent on covering all aspects of our radio/entertainment history. I wanted to really dig in, separate fact from fiction, inform the unaware, bring about a greater appreciation for a bygone era and maybe even learn some new facts along the way. -

COMMERCIAL DISCS CUT IN KWKH RADIO STUDIOS The next eighteen songs are examples of the commercial discs recorded by record companies in the KWKH radio studios during the early years of the Hayride. Several of them were major country music used for radio broadcasts, some thirty by hits, competing with music made in profes - fifteen feet in size with a twelve foot high sional studios in Nashville, Dallas, and the ceiling, and an announcer's viewing area, big cities of the north, east and west.
